2016-09-22 Thread Damian Walsh
Thanks for all your suggestions - there are more than one that are noted
for the future.

In the end I arrived in Leeds quite late and the first restaurant to answer
the phone was Bibis so we went there.

In spite of good, friendly and attentive service (full marks for that) it
was a bit of a disappointment - the food was so so (but we were late..)
and the wine was priced for label rather than quality. Above all it
suffered because I'd eaten in an Italian restaurant at lunchtime in Reading
where I'd eaten an drunk just as well for less that half the price.

However (Leeds bit coming up), if we ever sign any comedic Italian players
from New Chersey it feels like they would be well at home there :)

I'm a big fan of TMBTC, but have to declare an interest - we helped develop the
brand and designed the website and menus.

One thing to remember though, Michael O'Hare is a Boro fan and business
partners with Giggs and Gary Neville. Might leave a sour aftertaste…

Another decent place for meat and wine is Stockdales, opposite Ambiente on East
Parade. Yorkshire sourced food, meat aged in their own facility in the cellar
and a decent wine list.

Haven't be to Sous le Nez for some time, but always great when I've been. Do
the waiters still speak in Yorkshire French Ted? By that I mean English, in a
French accent, tinged with Yorkshire. I could never decide whether they were
French blokes who'd lived here a while and picked up some nuance of the local

For great French wine accompanied with good food Kendell's bistro by
the playhouse is the best in Leeds. It's a great little restaurant
and they have a really good selection of red and white wines and
 very decently priced.
 (http://www.kendellsbistro.co.uk/wine_7_1787011667.pdf). I would
 recommend this place.
In terms of restaurants, if you like Rioja ( I'm not that keen)
http://www.ambiente-tapas.co.uk does great tapas dishes and lots of
good Spanish wine - it's a different selection to your usual bog
standard Rioja. They specialise in Sherry - obviously not my thing
but the wife says the sherry flights are good.
Gaucho does great steaks accompanied by heavy reds (Argentinian
Malbecs etc). They also do lots of different champagnes.
Fazenda is a Brazilian meat feast restaurant with another good South
American wine list. Lots of good wines but not my taste.
Bibis is not my place but every time I've been the food is excellent
and they always have a good wine selection.
Hopefully this gives you a few choices. Leeds is changing so fast
these days I can't keep up. I used to pride myself on having been to
every pub and bar in Leeds . I can't even name half of them these
days so I'm sure there's a few offering decent wine these days.
The beer has certainly improved. After Tetleys died ( although had a
great pint of hand pulled in Scabby Taps last night) the beer went
down hill, but now with all the independent breweries taking over
there's so many great pubs serving top quality ales But you
didn't ask for that did you!

Ahem. Well we went to La Feria in Harrogate and it was most pleasant - Spanish
place with either chicken or tapas - lovely Alhambra on draft, and what looked
like a reasonable wine list. Cote, a French place is also being mentioned in
despatches. My other fave in Harrogate is Deano's Graze & Grill (no that
Deano!) - wide range of international foods and ordering options - would take
too long to list, look at the website.
So Alex, come to Harrogate or Knaresborough, and see North Yorkshire!

MARCHING ON TOGETHER

Re: [LU] Non-LU / eating in Leeds question

2016-09-21 Thread Ted
Hi Alex,

I visited French Restaurant Sous le Nez on Quebec St recently, (just off
City Square). Bit of a hidden gem.
Really enjoyed it and they have an extensive wine list (40 pages)

Re: [LU] Non-LU / eating in Leeds question

2016-09-21 Thread {broken-address} Richard Walker
Hi Alex,

Leeds has its first michelin starred restaurant for many years with the man
behind the curtain however I've never been and no idea what the wine is like (
chef also looks like a freak)

For great French wine accompanied with good food Kendell's bistro by the
playhouse is the best in Leeds. It's a great little restaurant and they have a
really good selection of red and white wines and very decently priced.
(http://www.kendellsbistro.co.uk/wine_7_1787011667.pdf). I would recommend this
place.

In terms of restaurants, if you like Rioja ( I'm not that keen)
http://www.ambiente-tapas.co.uk does great tapas dishes and lots of good
Spanish wine - it's a different selection to your usual bog standard Rioja.
They specialise in Sherry - obviously not my thing but the wife says the sherry
flights are good.

Gaucho does great steaks accompanied by heavy reds (Argentinian Malbecs etc).
They also do lots of different champagnes.

Fazenda is a Brazilian meat feast restaurant with another good South American
wine list. Lots of good wines but not my taste.

Bibis is not my place but every time I've been the food is excellent and they
always have a good wine selection.

Hopefully this gives you a few choices. Leeds is changing so fast these days I
can't keep up. I used to pride myself on having been to every pub and bar in
Leeds . I can't even name half of them these days so I'm sure there's a few
offering decent wine these days.

The beer has certainly improved. After Tetleys died ( although had a great pint
of hand pulled in Scabby Taps last night) the beer went down hill, but now with
all the independent breweries taking over there's so many great pubs serving
top quality ales But you didn't ask for that did you!

Rich

Thank you very much to those who sent us suggestions for accommodation and
jobs. I've settled into the Hyde park area and I'm loving it here!

Thank you for the help.
