Printing one side of a page (and using up twice the amount of forest in the

Your solution should be to instruct your email reader to filter all the
Legacy messages into a separate folder. Then they won't get in the way

Also, you'd be able to organise them by thread rather than having them

Mary, it seems like the others have misread your message and think you

Starting from the Home Page:-

a) Select your family tree
b) Click on 'Tree Settings'. This is alongside 'View Profile for'
c) Click on the 'Export Tree' button

The site will now generate your GEDCOM file and, when complete, give a
button from which you can download the file.

d) Click on the 'Download your GEDCOM file' button
e) When prompted, save the file to your disk and remember where it is!

Now you can use Legacy. Close any file you may have open.

Now, select File-- Import From-- GEDCOM

Follow the prompts :-)

Right clicking for displaying/changing properties is a Windows thing and

To edit the marriage you left click on the marriage events icon. To

Not totally correct, Gene. If you are in the Family tab, then right

Then,

click select and it prompts me to enter the source detail. (it is here that
I though Ron was suggesting that I click 'save' on the source detail screen
which is just saving a blank detail screen.)

I just want to re-use the same source detail that I have already recorded
for individual #1.

Simple solution - before moving on to Individual 2, copy the source
detail to the Source Clipboard *and* copy the event to the Event clipboard.

You can now add a duplicate event (including the same source details) to
Individual 2 with a minimum of mouse clicks. Click the Add event button
on the Individual's Information screen, then, on the Add Event screen,
click on the blue '-' button to the left of the event details, under the
blue triangle button.

A different type of event can be added to individual 1 or 2 and the
source detail associated with it. See the two buttons underneath the
'Help' button on the Add Event or Edit Event screens? The one on the
left copies the current event + source information, to the Event
Clipboard. The one on the right, copies the event data from the
clipboard into the new event.

When you 'Cite a Source', you are in fact creating a new set of source
details from the same Master source.

Have you been clicking on the field labels in the Individual Information

information.

For example, if you click on the in label to the left of the Birth

Ecclesiastical Parish of Christ Church Chatburn.

How would I list this in the Location field of Legacy in keeping with
the recommendation for 4 fields (city; county; state or province;
country)? Also, would the country be England or United Kingdom?

I tried a couple of options but when I clicked on the Geo Location List
button, it didn't seem to find it.

This is where Ron Ferguson and I would denigrate the use of the Geo
Location Database to assist in forming the Location. If you used it, you
would be presented with 3 options

a) Chatburn,, Lancashire, England
b) Chatburn, Lancashire, England, Great Britain
c) Chatburn, Lancashire, England, United Kingdom

There are many semantic reasons why options b) and c) are meaningless,
some of which have been mentioned here at various times. Mainly, the
United Kingdom and Great Britain are *not* countries per se. They are
political units. You could almost say they were akin to NAFTA!

Option a) is the least offensive - but still wrong, since England
doesn't, and never has had, States or Provinces, and a County in England
is something totally different to a County in a State in America. I
suppose the nearest unit of English local government to an American
County, would be an District or Local Council.

So, you're really left with this (always supposing that you're aware
that Lancaster is an old name for Lancashire as well as being the name
of a town in its' own right)

Chatburn, Lancashire, England

This system then allows for large towns that have several parishes in
them and small towns and villages that perhaps only have one. You just
put the parish name in front of the town E.g.

Christ Church, Chatburn, Lancaster, England

The confusion comes from trying to impose a standard for naming places
that can not fit with the conventions used in England, Scotland and
Wales. Ireland too! But that's a separate matter.

Oh for the day when we English can pick which labels *we* want to assign
to each of the 9 possible elements of a Location! And do away with these
futile attempts at the Americanisation of the home country.

As a more permanent solution, Millennia could create a ZIP file

I agree with what you're trying to say, Ruth, but, this is not America.
It's the Internet and it covers more of the world than just the USA.

In response to what Marilyn said - There are varying degrees of

acceptable elsewhere and vice versa. As a result, Marilyn, you must be

Go back to your Forms Centre and click the Browse... button. From there,
navigate to where the forms are stored - normally the Forms subdirectory
within the Legacy folder - you should see two further subdirectories:
Census Forms and Relationship Diagrams. You're there! Click the OK

I noticed you can't select both cremated and burial. It's either one or

A body is normally either buried or cremated. So, death details apply as

No, that's the way the forward and back arrows on the main toolbar under

Note: whilst not being able to replicate your tagged/untagged problem, I

I know that I'm a lumper too! Perhaps it's less a matter of personal

there is generally a single repository - The National Archives at Kew.
In the US, the Federal equivalent is in Washington DC, but actual source

Perhaps this is why I see so many Americans opting to 'split' and

correct spelling? My family has a unique name wherein anyone in Canada
with the same spelling is related and the spelling has always been
consistent within the family going back over 200 years, but the errors
in census are amazing. I would never have found the family had they
not lived on the same homestead for 5 generations. When I finally
found a census where the name was correct, the enumerator was my
great-grandfather!

The rule is that you always enter exactly what you see, not what you
think it ought to be.

I know in this case it is 99.999% certain that what you are seeing is
wrong (don't forget that until quite recently spelling was very fluid
and people weren't too bothered about it) but even so you should enter
it in Legacy as it is written. You can always add a note about the
variation in spelling and why you believe this Joe Blogs to be the
same person as the Joe Bloggs of your records if you think it is
necessary.

I would add a little clarification to your first statement. The
so-called rule that you quote, is what transcribers are told to do.
This accounts for a lot of what people term as errors in various
indexes and transcriptions. Simply, they're not errors. Just the best
interpretation of what was written. Your personal knowledge is what
turns these interpretations into errors.

I think common sense (an oxymoron if ever there was one) should be the
main guide. If you're copying a transcription, then copy it exactly as
you find it. Add your own interpretive notes and, if at all possible,
get hold of a copy of the original and make your own transcription from it.

Remember, in Legacy you've always got that poorly-designed Surety
value to rate the level of personal confidence you have in any piece of
data. One transcription can always be rated higher than another.

Another disadvantage with Digest messages. People don't know how to

Also, a lot of email software doesn't 'know' how to properly handle a

Problem: Birth, Baptism/Christening, Death and Burial 'events' are not
Events in the sense that they normally have definitions in the Master
List of Event Definitions. Nothing to stop you adding these as Events
along with your own definition of how they print. Of course, you'd have
to stop the 'events' from printing as well.

It's certainly possible using VB.NET 3.5 to programmatically adjust

No. From the Legacy Home tab, click on 'Suggest a new feature' in the

If you're not doing web pages, can't you just move the pictures to a

use Legacy to access one of the now missing pictures and, when it moans

I was using Generations where all sources were numbered, and I am a

This is an exercise that is best done through trial and error. When
importing a GEDCOM file, Legacy will always allow you to customise the
import process. This allows you to handle, in a way that makes sense to
you, items of data that has been tagged in the GEDCOM in a non-Legacy
fashion.

As I say, do it through trial and error. Repeating the process as often
as necessary, using different customisation choices and options, until
it looks as good as it'll get.

From what I can determine from the GEDCOM 5.5 Standard, OBIT is *not* a

That's exactly right!

The pictures on CD will show up if the right CD is present whilst the

Legacy only store pathnames, not copies of picture files. You would be
best advised to copy the CD-based pictures onto your hard disk. Then,
remove the CD and try to access a picture that is on the CD. When Legacy
complains that it can't find the picture, avail yourself of the option
to find the picture for yourself. Locate and select the missing picture

As for recovery. Well I'd reverse what I did. I'd edit the Acorn Hill

And of course (Mike) this means that I did not turn off any of the

I must admit, I was under the impression that the browser specified
inside the Legacy options, was the one that would be used when
previewing any generated web pages.

I also know, that the Legacy program uses a WebBrowser control as part
of the Legacy Home Page tab. Further, this control (which makes the
programming of a simple browser so easy) *has* to be based on IE. MS
still haven't removed this dependency from any Windows version even
though this was, I thought, what all the law suits were about.

When referring to IE, you must make a clear distinction between the
visible part of IE and the engine that runs under the hood. The engine
is *always* used whenever a program makes use of th MS-developed
WebBrowser control. No getting around this, unless and until the likes
of Mozilla and Google split their browsers into the same two parts.

To satisfy (get around?) the legal issues, all MS have done is allow you
to choose a default browser that will be used whenever you double-click
on an html file on your disk. Don't expect this to be used automatically
by what is really a very simple piece of code where everything happens
under the hood.

I've just received notification that 7.0.0.97 is available! Strange,
because it's been installed since Monday! I note the following

===
What's New

FamilySearch - Added new field to handle the new FamilySearch individual
number. This is now imported and exported and displayed in the
Individual's Information screen.

===

This, to me, is ambiguous. The field is there alright, but I suspect it
will only be used if a) you have an LDS logon and b) you enable the
various LDS options on the General tab.

By the way, won't this only work when used in conjunction with the New
FamilySearch site?

That's what I was thinking, too! So, why make the change now, when a
further change will be necessary in order to implement the linkage. I
can see at least one minor change (the search url) and one massive
change (the search itself) being required.

Okay, I cannot tell you exactly what I did, but I discovered I had
left out a generation. So, I unlinked the (previously) oldest
ancestor from the newly-entered parents siblings. Then I entered
in the missing father, except that he needed to be part of that list
of siblings, so when I added HIS father mother I clickec on link
to existing to get him inserted.

Well, NOW I have two sets of identically named parents for those
siblings. One set are the parents of the James I forgot to enter,
and the other set are the parents of the rest of his siblings. They
show up as (1/2) with their mother's name and everything!

Is there some combine duplicates thing I could run? Or should I
just delete and start entering again?

Another word for combine duplicates is Merge. Look it up in the

I don't enter the surname if it is the same because I don't like the
way it reads in reports. If I had my druthers I'd enter it and add an
option in reports to suppress the redundant surname. I think Legacy's
AKA handling needs lots of work.

I totally agree with you Dennis.

In fact, I think there's a desperate need to make a distinction between
'real' AKAs and what should really be classed as transcription errors
that give rise to a multitude of alternate spellings.

Since the program comes with the series of 'Alt. ...' Event Types,
what's wrong with creating an Event Type of 'Alt. Spelling' or something
similar? This would alleviate reams of the 'Another name for...' notes
and also allow you to source the alternative/wrong spelling.

Aliases should really be left for alternate, official surnames.

What you are referring to is commonly known as the Titlebar!

Double-clicking on the title (your 'middle button') will make the whole

In this case, doesn't the Apply button 'apply' to already entered surnames?
