I too have Legacy on more than one computer -- a desktop running Windows XP
and a laptop running Windows 7.

I copy the data files (and those of other programs) using a USB flash
drive.and batch files on each computer.

It should be possible to show that in user defaults, or isn't it?

Yes, that happened to me once, and I've never tried it again. I always
download manually, except, of course when the download fails, as it did this
time, because of the failure of the "I am a robot" test.

I ran into this same problem. I do know that Ancestry standard test is an

Re: [LegacyUG] AncestryDNA results

2017-03-15 Thread Cathy Pinner

Florence,

You can't enter autosomal DNA tests (like Ancestry) in the same way you
can enter other types of DNA tests. The results are megabytes long.

You can enter an event and attach the results file to that.
You can use events to help you keep track of definite matches.
There are other ideas on how to record/track DNA matches in the webinars
and elsewhere.

Georges,

Legacy does remember the paths to all the linked media.

I also use sub-folders.

Are you saying that it doesn't remember the last folder you were using
last time you linked a piece of media but starts at the folder in 6.2?

That's what I expect it to do. But within a session it remembers the
sub-folder I'm using.

I have to live with some constrains imposed by Legacy.

Since I have copies of Legacy on more than one computer, I keep all my
Media file on a separate external drive that I move from computer to
computer.

If I use only one folder that I identify with 6.2, I have no problems
and all the files are identified correctly on the different computers.

But I am a bit compulsive and like to keep together files of the same
nature.

This is why I create subfolders – one for birth related pictures,
another one for marriage related pictures, etc. and this is where my
problems start.

Because of 6.2, Legacy goes to the main folder where there are no files.

It would be nice if Legacy could remember the path of already
registered pictures, videos, . . .

To see where your media attached to Legacy is, see either View -

click View Current List of Media Folders.
These may show the full path or use codes that reference the folders

Option 6.2 should reference your parent media folder. You set this
yourself.

What is unusual with your folder setup is that you don't have your
data at a different level in your folder hierarchy. More normal is
Data and Media at the same level with Pictures, Documents etc under
that or Data as the parent folder with Media under it.

Data\Media\Legacy Pictures\
However that shouldn't be a problem.

With your folder setup you are right that 6.2 should reference
D:\Dropbox\legacy-myname\

The default locations are
...\Documents\L egacy Family Tree\Data\
and ...\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Media\
but you don't have to use these. You just set 6.1 and 6.2 to the
folder you are using.

However you do have to have
...\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\
This folder holds your Legacy Settings. You cannot change the name of
any element of that path.

However, from reading the “Help” for 6.2 I had expected that just the

Legacy keeps track of all the folder locations from which you have
loaded picture, sound, and video files. If the file cannot be found

[LegacyUG] Why are Irish records so weird? Free webinar by Ireland's John Grenham now available for limited time

2017-03-15 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
The recording of today's webinar, "Why are Irish records so weird?" by John
Grenham is now available to view at www.FamilyTreeWebinars.com
for free for a limited time.

*Webinar Description*

Not all Irish records were destroyed in 1922, but the burning of the Public
Record Office in that year did leave an immense gap. As a result, Irish
genealogical research has to deal with idiosyncratic, fragmentary and
sometimes marginally relevant records in ways that can seem very strange to
those used to British, US or Australian sources. In addition, Ireland came
late to digitization and has done it unsystematically. To be polite. This
talk unravels the ways in which marginal records have become essential for
Irish research, and the peculiarities in using them online.

If you could not make it to the live event or just want to watch it again,
the 1 hour 28 minute recording of "Why are Irish records so weird?" is now

Tracing
Your Irish Ancestors by John Grenham - PDF or Printed book*
The best book ever written on Irish genealogy, the 4th edition of *Tracing
Your Irish Ancestors* retains the familiar structure of previous editions
but is now more useful than ever. Combining the key features of a textbook
and a reference book, it describes the various steps in the research
process while at the same time providing an indispensable body of source
materials for immediate use.

The biggest change from previous editions is in its approach to the
Internet. Online research is now an essential part of any Irish family
history project, so the 4th edition serves as a directory to online
records, discussing their uses and outlining research strategies. The sheer
scale of the data available online makes a guide such as this all the more
essential, and in the hands of a master it is indispensable.

Along with its step-by-step instructions in the location and use of
traditional genealogical records, its discussion of civil records of birth,
marriage, and death, as well as land records and wills, and its list of
Roman Catholic parish records and source lists-—all expanded, updated, and
indexed-—it is easily the most useful book in Irish genealogy.

However, from reading the “Help” for 6.2 I had expected that just the
path "D:\Dropbox\legacy-myname" should suffice:

-

*6.2 Default Location of Media Files*

Legacy keeps track of all the folder locations from which you have
loaded picture, sound, and video files. If the file cannot be found in
any of these locations, the /Find File/ window is displayed and offers
to help you find it or let you browse for it yourself.

As y ou link pictures, sounds, video, and other documents into your
family file, Legacy automatically records their location folders

-

Am I missing something?

I was updating from within Legacy when the download failed and the program
froze. I got a message advising a manual download.

OK, it seems to be a Google problem, and not a Legacy problem.

I just did a search on Google about something quite unconnected with Legacy,
and it timed out saying "The server at www.google.com is taking too long to
respond".

Perhaps someone is doing a DDOS assault on Google.

Strange, the list has been slow, although it picked up the past few days.

Note the instructions at the bottom of every email on how to unsubscribe.

Thanks. I did not that the page (as opposed to the home page) took a long
time to load, and there was a message at the bottom saying "Waiting for
www.google.com"

I do use an addon called NoScript, which allows one to block or unblock
scripts on selected sites, but I had it unblocked for the Legacy site.

I'll try again tomorrow, maybe it was just Google being slow.

[LegacyUG] Your emailing list

2017-03-15 Thread Donald A. Kirk via LegacyUserGroup
The original message to the list is in the attachment.

This action is required because of the DMARC Reject/Quarantine Policy
imposed by some email providers. Users who want to send messages
without conversion to attachments should use a different email address
for their subscription.

Known providers for free email accounts whose emails do not require
this conversion include gmail.com and hotmail.com. Many other email

Hi you are probably more advanced than I am but just in case... sometimes the
screen resolution combined with the zoom size will cause items to not appear on
the display and I have experienced the scroll bars not appearing. So I lower
the zoom.

Captcha's shouldn't be affected by pop-up blockers etc?

Best Regards,

Re: [LegacyUG] Downloading updates

2017-03-15 Thread Brian Kelly

The download pages added a Captcha several months ago.

Maybe your freeze was because you did not see and click on the Captcha
and were also blocking the error page from loading. The original posting
in this thread mentioned an error page the user got saying the download
failed because his submission had failed the robot test.

PS. This only affects those who download from the website. An update
from within legacy does not have the robot test Captcha. You did not say
if you were updating from the web site or from Legacy.

[LegacyUG] Export from findmypast.co.uk Import to legacy

2017-03-15 Thread Mike Heseltine
It should be possible to export a gedcom file from findmypast which I can
then import to legacy. The export appears to complete but I cannot find the
resulting downlaod on my computer. Using the import facility in Legacy five
gedcom files are found (not the ones I want). Whichever of the five I
select Legacy always goes to the same one to open.
Any ideas.

Maybe you have something on your computer that is blocking that script
