Re: [LegacyUG] CUSTOMIZE
Hi Pierre, It's not a BUG but a change. Some Customise options are now Family File specific. Do you therefore have to reset them all when you open/convert a different file? NO. Once you have set the options as you like, use the button at the bottom of the Customise screen Options for Default Settings to save your settings. Note you can save the global and user settings separately or together. When you open or convert another file go to this same button and this time use the Reset to User-Defaults - and you're done. New files will be created with these Family File specific defaults. Some people want different defaults for different files, others don't. Some would like more options family file specific, others less. Cathy At 07:56 AM 6/12/2013, you wrote: CUSTOMIZE I'm testing Legacy v.8. I keep Legacy v.7.5 and I copy my rene.fdb in v.8. [LegacyUG] Backup to external hard drive
Every time I exit Legacy I do a back up to an external hard drive. When I was using Legacy 7.5 it remembered my settings and automatically backed up to where I wanted it on the external drive. However when I exit v8 it automatically defaults to the C/ drive for back ups and I have to change it to the E/ hard drive every time. I have checked the user manual and the help in the programme but cannot find how to set the default backup to the E/ hard drive. Any suggestions please? [LegacyUG] no pop up information when mousing over children in upgrade to version 8
Hi, I'm just wondering if this is bug on Legacy 8 or if it was stopped in the update. When on 7.5 if I was checking a certain person and they had children I could hover with the mouse and birth, death and other information would pop up, now with version 8 this does not happen, have I missed checking something in options or is this not happening in version 8 as it did in version 7.5? And if this is not happening with the update will it be something that will be happeing since it used to as I used to find that extreemly helpfull as I did'nt need to bring up the actuall detail on that child. [LegacyUG] Missing media - how can I get a list of them?
I noticed when I closed and backed up at the end of today's session that I apparently have some missing media files. I went to Options Customise 6.2 Test all Media Folders to try and get a list of the missing media It tested the folders but didn't give me a list of what it couldn't find. Now either I don't have any missing media, or something else is happening, or I'm not in the right place to get a list of missing media. Can someone please advise where and how to get this listing please? And before someone suggests them, No, I do not want to use Media Relinker or Gather Media. I have a very specific folder structure on my computer and over 500MB of image files, and from what I've seen of other people's comments about these tools, while they may be handy for some, I do not have the time (or patience) to sit and wait for Legacy to find every family history irrelevant media file on my computer just so it can find the ones it should have, and I don't want or need Legacy to move or copy my family history media files to yet another folder. All I need right now, is for Legacy to make a list of the media files it can't find. I will then go find them and relink them manually. Re: [LegacyUG] Colours (Colors)
The ability to adapt colours to suit the many different types of colour blindness was obviously a wonderful solution to an otherwise awkward problem. With the many different types, there was no way that one or two or even three colour scheme was Ever going to suit everyone. Making the colours of different parts of the different screens adaptable and changeable is brilliant and I love it!! On 10 December 2013 07:58, singhals singh...@erols.com wrote: FS was warned about that back while the current offering was still in Concept. Clearly, there was no color-deficient person on the test team or the concept team or the QC team. Cheryl Bryan Pratt wrote: I’ve copied this to both groups - Legacy and FS. I do believe in the colour-blind problem quite seriously. In a universal piece of software like Legacy and Family Search, programmers need to give cognizance to this issue. For you non-colourblind it’s straightforward. For us it’s more difficult. We need bold colour differentiations, not wishy-washy fawns, creams, greys, pinks. I’ve changed my colour configurations already on both softwares. Some will scream at my colour mixes but at least I can see the differences. And I believe close to 10% of men (especially) are colour blind. It’s a sex-linked gene if any one is interested, e.g. my maternal grandfather was colour-blind. This just a thought. Hi Anne The backup locations are stored in the file Backup.usr in the folder [YourUserDocuments]\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\Usr. It is a text file so you can open it with Notepad. I suggest that you examine the file before backing up, when the default C:\ is being offered, and then again after backing up to your external location and see if the locations have been changed. RE: [LegacyUG] Backup to external hard drive
Maybe legacy 8 checks to see whether the backup path is valid when Legacy is opened. If not, then revert to C:\ A possibility that maybe the programmers can shed some light on. I would have thought the path check would have been done when the backup was invoked. RE: [LegacyUG] Field Descriptors in Family View
Thanks Mike, I have submitted a suggestion for a general Option called Compressed Family View where 1) the Parents label can either be turned of or place on the LHS of the data fields 2) the Integration Feature arrows are returned to the same place as Leg7.5 and remove the line under {your idea} 3) the Childrens label is placed to LHS of children data fields and othe childrens features similarly placed on RHS of said data fields 4) remove the line under the children's data fields. This will result in saving 4 lines and nearly bring the font size back to that of a similarly sized window of Legacy7.5 Family View. The Toolbars still take up more space that 7.5 unless you want to put up with them minimised and have extra mouse control (not something I enjoy with a Laptop). Re: [LegacyUG] Missing media - how can I get a list of them?
Kathy I followed the exact same steps of Testing all media folders and checked the Make a list of all missing media files box and the Proceed button. L8 then gave me a list, in text form, of 27 missing media files. Each item consisting of a one line description of where the media was attached followed by the existing link: full path and filename of the media. {Missing because I renamed a subfolder without thinking!!} As you say, if this is empty and you have missing media then there is a problem. Perhaps you should then try the Media Relinker as suggested by Cathy David On 10/12/2013 12:59, Cathy Pinner wrote: Kathy, I think you have been misinformed. The Media Relinker is the easiest way to get things relinked. It is also the tool that will give you the list of missing media and if you insist, you can get the list without using it to relink them. The Media Relinker can be restricted to search just one drive. It doesn't take that long - go and fetch a coffee while it makes the list. I've got a lot of meia on hte drive - many gigabytes - and it's finished before I get back. The Media Relinker does not move your media anywhere. It just helps you find the right file and fix the links. If your Media has been attached to Legacy for many many versions, you may have to use it to get all the media properly linked as the way of recording the link has changed over time and Legacy 8 is making sure things are properly linked the current way. You can, if it works for you , try checking the Media Folders at either Option 6.2 or View Master Lists Media Folders You can, if necessary use either the Change button there OR for many folders that need adjusting in the same way use Search and Replace on the Lists -Media folders. The Gather tool doesn't open unless you open it - and it can be controlled in a number of ways so you don't have to lose your folder structure. I keep my attached media in Dropbox and have for some time. However I found I had a handful of photos connected from elsewhere. The Gather tool left my Dropbox Legacy Pictures folder alone with all its subfolders and just gathered that handful of photos into my Dropbox Legacy Pictures folder and changed the links to that folder. To repeat: It's the Media Relinker Tool that will tell you what media isn't properly linked and give you the list you want. RE: [LegacyUG] Transfer of Legacy Data/Multimedia to New Computer
Hi Todd, The Options Ribbon - Customise - all the options now have a number. Sorry I now tend to refer to them by shorthand Option 6.2 means Options Ribbon - Customise - Choose 6.Locations in the side panel then look for 6.2. I'm sure we'll all develop a shorthand - maybe just the number or is Customise 6.2 clearer? One of the great innovations in Legacy 8 in my opinion. So much easier than referring to a tab and then describing where on the tab to find the particular option that needs to be set. RE: [LegacyUG] Transfer of Legacy Data/Multimedia to New Computer
Thanks, Cathy. Again, your help is much appreciated! Todd From: genea...@gmail.com To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Transfer of Legacy Data/Multimedia to New Computer Date: Tue, 10 Dec 2013 22:18:27 +0800 Hi Todd, The Options Ribbon - Customise - all the options now have a number. Cathy At 09:57 PM 10/12/2013, you wrote: Hi Cathy, Thank you so much for your help! The procedure you described is what I needed. The data's not a problem. Put it where you want (or restore the backups) and then open with Legacy. The media requires more handling to adjust the links. When you have the media where you want it, you'll find that it isn't showing because of the different path. Take a look at View Master Lists Media Folders and see where Legacy expects to find the media Then use Search and Replace on Lists - Media Folders to change the beginning of the path from the old location to the new one. Then in Options - Customise - Locations tab - Test all multimedia paths - just to make sure it's found everything. This can be done in Legacy 8 as well but it's best to use it to change the beginning of the path to [Default Media Folder]\ Then when you change computer you just go to Option 6.2 and set the Default Media Folder and you're done. Hope that's clear, Cathy At 12:37 PM 9/12/2013, you wrote: I want to transfer my Legacy family file from my old computer (running XP) to my new computer (running Windows 7.) Legacy 7.5 Deluxe (build 7.5.0.278) is installed on the XP computer and I have now installed Legacy Deluxe (same version and build) on the Win 7 computer. I have some questions about the effect of differing directory paths on these two computers and about how to include the Picture Center information in the transfer of the multimedia files (e.g., picture captions and dates in the entered in the Picture List Tab.)?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office / The two computers are networked together on a LAN with file sharing enabled, so file transfers between the two is easy and straightforward. The directory structure for the Legacy data files and multimedia files will be identical for the two computers, but the absolute paths to them will be different at the front end. For the data files, the paths are: XP computer: C:\Documents and Settings\(username-on-XP)\My Documents\Legacy-7\Data\, Win 7 Computer: C:\Users\(username-on-Win7)\Documents\ Legacy-7\Data\, where Username-on-XP and Username-on-Win7 are different. For multimedia files, an example for photos of people is XP computer: C:\Documents and Settings\(username-on-XP)\My Documents\Legacy-7\Media\Photos\People\, Win 7 computer: C:\Users\(username-on-Win7)\Documents\ Legacy-7\Media\Photos\People\. I think I understand how to transfer the data files from old to new computer (backup the data files on the XP computer, copy the resultant zipped file to the Data directory on the Win 7 computer, and then restore it from there on that computer.) However, I am uncertain about how to transfer the associated multimedia files in such a way as to preserve/include the information (e.g., captions and dates) that appears in the Picture List Tab of the Picture Center (i.e., the PicList.dbm files that are located in each of the multimedia folders - in my case, there are a total of 98 PicList.dbm files corresponding to different groups/directories of multimedia files.) So my questions, restated here, are: -- Are the differing path front ends a complication in the transfer of the data and multimedia files? -- How can I ensure that the Picture Center (Picture List Tab) information gets

[LegacyUG] Exclude Problems not sticking
I appreciate the new problems icons, and what is found. I have one family line that had numerous children with gaps of more than 36 months. On the icon I right click, go to gaps tab, check exclude Warn if a child was born more than 36 months after previous child, click save. Sometimes the icon disappears immediately, sometimes I have to navigate elsewhere and come back and it is gone - no problem. However, many times it either does not go away or it returns when I again go to the screen. Has anyone else had this problem? Any thoughts? I do not want to globally remove this warning. Thanx. RE: [LegacyUG] sourcing questions
I agree with you, Don. I have several email sources that I have to rely on the person who transcribed documents and hope they didn't add typos to it. I prefer to have a real source so I can transcribe it myself, but sometimes they're just not available. It's better to try to find a document you can read and transcribe yourself. I also transcribe all census records I find because many times whoever did the transcription didn't do a very good job. If you have any ancestors from the Washington, DC area, they have a great resource called the DC Archives, operated by the DC government, where you can get all kinds of documents and they'll even send them via email for free. If the quality is bad, they'll send them to you in the mail (also free). Their vital records office used to be terrible. They would charge you for documents then tell you they couldn't find it. RE: [LegacyUG] Field Descriptors in Family View
I agree that changes should be made to make more efficient use of the screen real estate in family view, but quite frankly I think the solution is to more or less revert to the way it was in 7.5. I don't think this would really compromise the new look and feel. I think Husband and Wife need to stay on top, because that line is also used for tags. It's the same as 7.5 with the enhancement of showing more tags, it works just fine. It's the next two lines where the space is wasted. 1) Why are the family search arrows on a line by themselves? Just put them on the right of the name like they used to be. 2) Why have that blue underline to highlight the active person? Just highlight the name like it used to be. Those two simple changes will free up two lines which is significant space to expand the font size on the five vital events below. Perhaps - but I've not found this in any instruction yet: if I try to resolve the problem from the Children screen it sometimes takes, sometimes not. But, when I open each of the children's screens (ie, individual screen) and make the change there - it seems to be working. Does anyone know if this is correct? If so, can you point us to an instruction? Or is it one of those intuitive thingys? Genealogy - - - - - it's in my blood! RE: [LegacyUG] Field Descriptors in Family View
OK Jenny, I didn't have any real long names and didn't realize that. However, in the normal case (names that fit on one line) version 7.5 stretches the fonts to be very large, i.e. it uses the entire box to display the name in a very large font, causing it to appear like the FS arrows on 'on the same line'. Not the biggest deal in the world, but I did appreciate the old way making the font as large as possible. RE: [LegacyUG] Field Descriptors in Family View
Oops. I spoke to soon, Jenny. Not enough testing. 7.5 does not make the font size any larger when the name fits on one line vs. two lines. What is different is that 7.5 vertically centers the name and the FS arrows in the box. Version 8.0 aligns the name to the top of the box, and the FS arrows to the bottom of the box hence the different appearance. I think centering the text leaving equal white space above and below the name looks a bit better, but I'm not going to lose any sleep over the new presentation. RE: [LegacyUG] Living indicator - was Senior Moment
I find that when a person is highlighted as the main person of interest, (or as one of the parents of a person), then the colours work OK - e.g. Husband/Wife is in red when they are alive and black if they are dead. But if you move them to the children's list, by clicking on a parent then the colour shown is somewhat random. e.g. My grandmother had 10 siblings and all show correctly when they are the highlighted person. But as children of my gt grandparents 4 are showing as dead and the other 7 are shown as living - despite there being a death date for all 11 of them in the database. Equally, I and my 3 children show on the children list as dead, but all very much alive on the database. Re: [LegacyUG] no pop up information when mousing over children in upgrade to version 8
I am also in total agreement that the hovering box should be brought back. There are many families who have more than 6 children...and on my family view, six is the optimum amount displayed. This means I must scroll to see the complete list of children. The convenience of the hovering box was you could see the particulars of any child without the need to scroll...and with the children's area set on best fit columns, the complete family is viewable from one screen. Please bring the hovering boxes back. RE: [LegacyUG] Living Indicator [was: Senior Moment]
Bobby, Paul, et al, In my testing, I never saw a case where the Living Indicator - as demonstrated by, in Family View, the color or the NUMBER in a child list or the label of husband or wife - differed from the setting of the Living radio button. I would like to see evidence of this to see what might be triggering this. Please be aware that, although I believe that any contents in the death or burial fields should trigger living = no, some conditions do not. Further, you can enter a death date which will trigger Living = no, but removing it will not change the person back to Living = Yes. john. RE: [LegacyUG] sourcing questions
Don, I’m confused a bit. If you’re looking at an image file of a document, are you saying that this image could be bogus because it’s not the actual paper document? Maybe I didn’t go to the courthouse, but I have a digital photocopy of the document that I am looking at. Why is this not sufficient for “what I, myself, know”? Thanks, Kirsty J From: Don Hanson [mailto:terra...@comcast.net] Sent: Tuesday, December 10, 2013 8:34 AM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] sourcing questions Kirsty, I source what I, myself, know. In this case, the source of your evidence is the person who supplied the info. I would note where you might find the original, so that you or another researcher could more easily view it first-hand. But you did not personally view the source document. You aren’t even sure that the person supplying it did. For me, a source documents the source of the information that I used to reach a conclusion. Everything else goes into determining the quality of that source. For some facts, I may not want to have better sources. I may not be able to justify the expense, or maybe a better quality source doesn’t exist. So, for my purposes, the source is what I used, not what I could have used. The ‘coulda, shoulda, woulda goes into notes. Don From: Kirsty M. It helps clarify some issues in my mind. It sounds like, in my specific situation, you would advocate sourcing the person who supplied the vital certificate rather than the entity that created or holds those certificates. This is opposite what Jenny was saying she does — in the example you used, Jenny would (if I understand her correctly) source the birth certificate’s issuing agency and then comment that she received the image of the birth certificate from Sarah Rubenstein by email who said she got it from her professional genealogist who visited xyz County Courthouse in the Summer of 2010). The actual style of sourcing, then, seems like one of those stylistic choices that a genealogist will choose and then hopefully stick with consistently (like burial notes versus cemetery event). Your comments on “form” versus “substance” and the purpose being to help another person find that same information are also helpful. I think I can sometimes get bogged down worrying over the “right” way to do something, when what’s most important is that the information is communicated. It seems like every year or two I’m updating the way I handle sources; they become more and more precise. (And I always vow that one of these days I’m going to have to go back and fix the incomplete sourcing I did back when I was first getting started.) I felt confused about what to do earlier today, but now I feel more confident in the choices I’ll end up making for my particular sourcing situations. RE: [LegacyUG] Media management within Legacy
Thanks for your input, Cathy! Helpful considerations. From: Cathy Pinner [mailto:genea...@gmail.com] Sent: Monday, December 9, 2013 9:36 PM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Media management within Legacy A couple of tips (or more ;-)) Decide where you want to keep the media you attach to Legacy and set this as your Default Media Folder - Options 6.2. If you decide to use a number of sub-folders, set the parent folder to the Default Media Folder If you use the Picture Centre, you need to move or copy your media to your Default folder(s) before you start attaching. If you use the Media Gallery for each person, you'll be asked when attaching if you want to copy the media to the Default folder (or on the Advanced tab - to another folder of your choice - eg one of the sub-folders). The Picture Centre remembers, at least in the short term, the caption etc you add to the photo. If you want to attach the same photo to a number of different people with the Media Gallery you can copy and then paste. This also copys and pastes the caption etc. The Media Galleries are easier to use. The Picture Centre is quicker if you are organised and have a lot of pics you want to attach in the one session. Note that it only handles Pictures and not other media types. Re attaching a picture more than once to the same person - I wouldn't. And I'd hesitate to add it more than once to a nuclear family if it's the only pic for an event and therefore the preferred pic which will be included in reports - awfully repetitive. Last tip - Legacy doesn't need large archive sized pics - I started off with screen-sized copies of my archived pics so they'd look good in a slider show - see View - Scrapbook if you don't know this feature of Legacy. The problem is that the screen now has a lot more pixels than it used to so I'm now adding pics a little larger but I haven't yet gone beyond 1024 pixels wide and probably won't. The file size gets too large for them all to be saved/backed up easily. I keep my attached media in Dropbox along with my Legacy backup files. I don't backup the media through the Legacy backup as its already backed up in Dropbox (and ontp external drives when I backup my computer). Have Fun, Cathy At 09:27 AM 10/12/2013, you wrote: For those of you who have scads of media files attached within Legacy and have created wonderful reports and charts and websites, I have a few questions about how you manage your media files. Not so much on your hard disk, but more within Legacy itself. (Since moving to Legacy 8 I've been taking some time to get re-acquainted with some of the features. Picture Center wasn't something I paid much attention to previously, but now I thought I'd make a more concerted effort to attach my thousands of media files to their appropriate persons.) So here are my questions: (1) When you have an image that relates to more than one event, do you place the image in multiple places? I.e., for a birth that also discusses the baptism... both places? Or only one? Or one in birth, and others in the sourcing details for both events? If you have the same photo in more than one event, and then have photos turned on in your report option, do you like the results you get? (2) Do you ever have multiple copies of an image attached to a person for any reason, and if so, why? Also, does it affect the way your reports and websites get generated? (3) Are there any pros and cons to attaching group photos to more than one individual? (4) Is there anything about the way you've attached media files in Legacy that you'd wish you'd done differently? and, finally, (5) Is there any advice you would give to someone who's just starting out with attaching media? RE: [LegacyUG] sourcing questions
In that case, I found original birth and death certificates in my great uncle's basement in DC. Since I couldn't ask where my relatives got them because they were all dead, I used the same repository where I had gotten most of my birth and death certificates from for DC since they have all these certificates. If you received it digitally, like from Ancestry.com, then I would use them as the repository. A second repository could be wherever they got it from which is usually listed on Ancestry. If it was sent to you electronically by someone else then I would put that person down unless you know of an official place where you can get the same document. Putting down an individual isn't going to do much good years later when they're dead. If it's something from a private collection like a scan of a bible, I would put the person down since it's likely this isn't something that anyone can get. Bill Boswell From: Kirsty M. RE: [LegacyUG] sourcing questions
It depends upon who you want to convince. If you are doing the tree for yourself, you are the judge of what proof (source) you want to accept. If you are creating the tree for a book publisher, they will have their standards of proof needed. Remember, sources are like a bibliography that supports conclusions made in a research paper. The intended audience dictates how thorough you need to be. Facts can be remembered incorrectly, transcripts may contain typos, documents can (and are) faked. I enjoy watching shows about antiques and art and how they are valued. I marvel at how often things are faked. A photocopy of a faked document doesn’t prove that the original wasn’t faked. There is no way to validate it. But, for your own personal use, a photocopy may be perfectly acceptable. But, I have a short memory, so my source would be the person who supplied me with the photocopy, I would link an image of the photocopy and I would include a note with as many specifics as I could. Things that would help stimulate my memory. Unless you are researching for another, don’t worry about getting the sourcing to conform to anyone’s standards. It’s all changeable if you decide to change your methods later. Don From: Kirsty M. RE: [LegacyUG] Living indicator - was Senior Moment
I have V8 deluxe on 2 machines and on both of them the child number is the same colour as the sex of the child - ie all fields are blue for boys and red for girls. So the living indicator isn't being applied to the child list. On one machine option 3.9 was switched off, but even when I turned it on it only applied to the main couple, not their children. When I changed the child list view to best fit columns (option 8.5) or 3 columns then the child number colour was set according to the living indicator. I changed back to a grid list and the colour of the child number reverted to being the child's sex. Re: [LegacyUG] New Keyboard shortcuts added
I found it interesting to discover that there are valuable keyboard shortcuts available, which are not yet described in the Help File. These are mostly the very ones I've been crabbing about that I thought were missing in version 8. They are there, but done in a different way. I was getting ready to make a suggestion in this regard, but discovered that my suggestion had been anticipated, and was already implemented! When I saw in the list of Keyboard Shortcuts that the Alt + shortcuts didn't include any with letters W, H, S, or D, I thought -- why not use the Alt key as a replacement for the A key we had been using in version 7 for AH = Add Husband, AW = Add Wife, etc., etc., These shortcuts would then look like this: Alt + H Add Husband Alt + W Add Wife Alt + S Add Son Alt + D Add Daughter I'm happy again! These work fine already in version 8. They are most valuable when entering data, as it often eliminates the need to go back and forth between the keyboard and mouse; making it a more efficient way to do the work. Thank you developer folks for your keen sense of logic, and ability to anticipate our needs. You might want to have a talk with your Help File Editor person, however. :-) The Help File looks quite well done, really -- I'm only speaking in jest. It would be nice, though, if the information about these other shortcut key combinations could be added to the Help File for future updates. Thanks again! RE: [LegacyUG] sourcing questions
Don: Good rigorous protocol. What you are recommending is much like establishing the provenance for artwork. You always source the last known source. Then you trace it back each step of the way to its origin. Tedious? Yes. But much more accurate than the sloppiness found in some genealogy. And one of the delights of genealogy is being a careful and accurate sleuth. From: Don Hanson [mailto:terra...@comcast.net] Sent: Tuesday, December 10, 2013 1:25 PM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] sourcing questions It depends upon who you want to convince. Things that would help stimulate my memory Unless you are researching for another, don’t worry about getting the sourcing to conform to anyone’s standards. It’s all changeable if you decide to change your methods later. Don From: Kirsty M. If you’re looking at an image file of a document, are you saying that this image could be bogus because it’s not the actual paper document? Maybe I didn’t go to the courthouse, but I have a digital photocopy of the document that I am looking at. Why is this not sufficient for “what I, myself, know”? Re: [LegacyUG] no pop up information when mousing over children in upgrade to version 8
1. Yes, I can scroll in other apps. 2. I was looking specifically at cases with more children than show on the screen. I originally had it set to show 2 columns and have now decided I like the 3 columns, so that takes care of most of the families with a lot of children. Mary On Tue, Dec 10, 2013 at 1:24 PM, C.G.
