The clue was “not an index in this table” The data wasn’t lining up correctly.
I always like to think of a check/repair like the Windows “defrag” and
“chkdsk” (though this might not be the best analogy if you ask one of the
programmers). When you are working in your file making additions,
What would you consider a large file? Is there a capacity on Legacy? My
data entry is taking longer and longer. Also I am getting slower and

The only time I've seen a file go over the Access limit was a few
years back when the person was a "name gatherer". He had been
importing any gedcom he could find and eventually crashed Legacy.
When I tried to look at the file in Access there were a gazillion
"unknown" individuals, not to mention
I have seen files with 500,000 to over 1,000,000 individuals! They're
a little slow when you get up into those numbers but Legacy normally
runs fine with that big of a file.
The file size limit is set by Microsoft Access, the database Legacy is
built on, to 2 GB but when you get close, you can
Nan, have you checked out the Webinars that Legacy offers for free?
They are wonderful & if you miss the live version you can still catch it
free for a while afterwards.
I especially like the ones that show how to use the Legacy software...it
can do so much.
Another plus is that if you do need
Hi Donna,
How aggravating! I would think you inadvertently clicked Cancel instead
of Save.
You don't say whether you were typing in General Notes, an Event Note or
elsewhere.
It's not such a bad idea to save more often.
Another option is to do the typing in your Word Processor if that's set
up
Who does deadlines for reports and conferences in Legacy? It is a genealogy

Don't leave the group. Although there have been a few moans about problems
recently it's not always like that. I've learned so much about using Legacy by
reading all the posts here.
Do give it a bit more time

Hi Sherry,
My Legacy file now exceeds 438,500 names, 1.25 GB, and runs with no problems.
I do have a lot of notes so I'll watch that 2GB file limit.

Whether you upload your file to the internet or not has no bearing. Regular
check/repairs keep the data file on your computer in tip top shape which in
turn means it will be in tip top shape if you export it in any format. Even if
you have no pictures or documents attached the data file still
Good point. I will try it again tomorrow and see how it goes. I like the idea
you suggested of typing in word.

I have just spent a half hour typing a large document into legacy only to
find it has disappeared. This has happened a number of times to me. Anyone
have any ideas what is going on. And yes I run file maintenance.

Legacy User Group guidelines:
Here is a dumb question before the group is finished with the discussion of the
check/repair. I am fairly new to Legacy. I use it only on my computer -- not
anything uploaded to the internet. I don't attach any pictures or documents,
but only put things in the notes section. Is there any
Many thanks to all who have emailed me off-list. I will continue to be the
"point" person since you have made clear your reluctance to incur the wrath of
those "defenders of the faith" who dismiss our concerns.

Thank you Michele. Good explanation and the check/repair worked. I'll start
doing it once a week. Thanks for the fast response and fix to the problem. I've
been using Legacy for years and you've come a long way.
