Re: [LegacyUG] Is MyHeritage Worth It?

2017-09-07 Thread Anne Lo Forte Willson
My input on this thread...I am not impressed with MyHeritage's records.
>From what I can tell, they are all copies of what is available elsewhere.
However, I have found more of my Scandinavian family in trees on MyHeritage
than in other places, including pictures and sources...all new information
that someone in Norway posted regarding their family.

Also, I like on MyHeritage that even when the records or trees that are
'Smart' matches show up, I can mark them as a match, but NOT add any
information from the record or tree. FamilySearch, of course, has only one
tree, and you have to look in the Duplicate finder to find duplicates.
Ancestry gives me hints for individuals in matching trees, but I can't do
anything with them, so I 'Ignore' them and leave them sitting in the
'Ignored Hints' folder, this is a problem for me, because some of the trees
that I 'Ignore' are about my same people, but others are not and Ancestry
has no way to distinguish between the two. MyHeritage does, because you
can mark them as matches, but not add any information from them.

Sorry, a little convoluted, but I hope you can understand my meaning.

As for a coordinated list of all the records available at each
sitemaking a chart sounds good, but with all the sites continually
adding more records, that's not a task that would be finished any time
soon.

And whoever it was that mentioned most of their research was in Rochester,
NY, Wow! You are SO lucky! Mine is literally all over the world. I've
learned about a whole lot of different records because of it!

Switch the check boxes for my heritage, or if you want to see both sets of

Re: [LegacyUG] Is MyHeritage Worth It?

2017-09-06 Thread Lucy Shore
Yep and that's more bang for the buck for Ancestry and Newspapers, com --
I'm not sure of the relationship between the two but what I noticed was
last year when renewing my Ancestry membership I was offered a 'bonus' for
a little extra fee I could subscribe to Newspapers,com. Perhaps I didn't
read the offer properly but, when searching Newspapers.com, they found the
article -- but I had to be a full member before I could access said
article. Then, when searching newspapers that I know for a fact were
previously on Ancestry were no longer there...but could be found on
newspapers.com. And so it goes... Not sure which company deserves my money
the most (or least).

If My Heritage can prove to be a little more transparent in their dealings
-- and have access to reasonable resources, it might be a good way to go
although I do find their trees very awkward.

Hi I don't mind sharing my family info and hard work with strangers (even
though I have funded it all too!). It would be a nice feature if there was a
way to credit the researcher in an obvious way on the various sites that allow

Hah! That's how I hit upon the fact that a cousin had posted my data
on his website - a rare name in the family showed up in a search
and he posted *all* the living info. He was fine with removing it. But
the other person who had taken the info and put it on *his* website

someone she had passed the info on for his own use had put it on his

I am strongly hesitant to share gedcoms or Family Files with others

Yes, here is my process.

Search each site for records

Write down the location of each record for each site.

Go to the library/FHL once a week with my list of records and access them
for free. Source them, Download them, and then attach to my tree.

Such an interesting conversation! It would be very nice if there were a
side-by-side comparison of each site's catalogs such that you could see
where the sites overlap and where they are unique. Perhaps where they are
unique interests you, perhaps it does not. I know no place that does this
for us, and my half-committed attempts to do it myself showed only that its
a monumental exercise and that the catalogs of each site are not always
easy or available.

I've been a member of Ancestry for years now, and it remains the most
complete site out there. I also use FamilySearch (free!) and recently
joined Newspapers.com. One strategy I've though of doing is to rotate my
memberships -- let Ancestry elapse (not renew) and join MyHertiage. Use
that for a year or so, let it elapse, move to the next.

One other thought is to focus on a certain area (e.g. vital records,
immigration records, newspapers, etc.). Nearly all lines of my family save
one come from Rochester, NY, and when looking for obituaries, I did a
focused review of the catalogs of GenealogyBank, Newspapers.com,
NewspaperArchive and Ancestry. I attempted to catalog only the newspapers
for the counties/cities/towns the Rochester metro area. From this I knew
that Newspapers.com was the best site for me to start with. A similar
strategy may be employed for other types of records.

Or, if you want to start a project to export each site's catalog and make
it available to compare and contrast, I'd be willing to help. :)

Re: [LegacyUG] Is MyHeritage Worth It?

2017-09-05 Thread Dennis Birke
I agree – this is an interesting conversation!

Subscriptions to Ancestry.com and Newspapers.com strike me as a good
combination. Newspapers.com seems to offer a lot that Ancestry.com does not
have. You get a lot of “bang for the buck”.

Do others have recommended combinations of genealogy sites that provide a lot
of information with minimal duplication?

Such an interesting conversation! It would be very nice if there were a
side-by-side comparison of each site's catalogs such that you could see where
the sites overlap and where they are unique. Perhaps where they are unique
interests you, perhaps it does not. I know no place that does this for us, and
my half-committed attempts to do it myself showed only that its a monumental
exercise and that the catalogs of each site are not always easy or available.

I've been a member of Ancestry for years now, and it remains the most complete
site out there. I also use FamilySearch (free!) and recently joined
Newspapers.com. One strategy I've though of doing is to rotate my memberships
-- let Ancestry elapse (not renew) and join MyHertiage. Use that for a year or
so, let it elapse, move to the next.

One other thought is to focus on a certain area (e.g. vital records,
immigration records, newspapers, etc.). Nearly all lines of my family save one
come from Rochester, NY, and when looking for obituaries, I did a focused
review of the catalogs of GenealogyBank, Newspapers.com, NewspaperArchive and
Ancestry. I attempted to catalog only the newspapers for the
counties/cities/towns the Rochester metro area. From this I knew that
Newspapers.com was the best site for me to start with. A similar strategy may
be employed for other types of records.

Or, if you want to start a project to export each site's catalog and make it
available to compare and contrast, I'd be willing to help. :)
