Folks,

An Access Violation has nothing to do with permissions as was stated
earlier. This error code is specific to virtual memory management.

Most often, this points to an error in programming logic such as a NULL
pointer access but it could be any attempt to read from and or write to a
virtual memory address that is invalid for the running process.

Based on threads earlier in the year, it would seem the Windows build of
LilyPond is known to have some gnarly and difficult to source issues with
memory management. While it can often run without error, certain constructs
in input will result in an AV. In fact, it is one of the reasons why I
stopped using the Windows build in favor of running the Linux version
through the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). Also, it would seem there
are very few and/or constrained resources for debugging this sort of thing,
as the principal developers for LilyPond would seem to be mostly
Linux-based.

Setting aside all that for a moment, Peter mentioned possible issues
manifesting in other software, and also that the input file in question has
worked before. So the underlying issue most likely is caused by a recent
change to the system. The fact that closing other running apps helped once
would make me think that there is an issue with excessive memory
consumption. Programs that do not handle out-of-memory conditions well can
often run afoul of an AV.

@Peter: Would you kindly verify a few things?

- Does LilyPond work at all? That is, are you only noticing issues with
particular input files or does it fail the same way even for simple inputs?
Also, is this issue occurring when building through Frescobaldi, or does it
also occur if you just launch LilyPond manually?

- Can you reproduce these issues when running LilyPond after a clean reboot
of the machine while running as little else as possible?

- Since this issue seems to impact two devices, have you installed anything
recently on both machines? Also, have you made any configuration changes
that would have applied to both devices?

-- Aaron Hill

Hi Aaron

Sorry to be so long - I have been tangled up in Windows10.

First I have no issues with Lilypond or Frescobaldi. Clean reboots have
removed MOST of the issues still one thing caught me out see below.

No configuration or download issues. But as usual file sharing on the local
ethernet was spannered after the restores and continues to be here today and
gone tomorrow.

The desktop needed a Windows10 style destructive restore losing my Outlook
data files and all the Outlook pop and smtp data ( grrr) as well as a raft
of other software. Who is it that relies only on Windows Store Apps!?.

I take your point and was coming to a similar conclusion. I suspect the
root of the problem may lie in the structure of the file index in Windows.
There are two different observations.

a. Somehow unbeknown to me I have got both onedrive and dropbox lurking
about in the file index. This can lead to a file pointer effectively
pointing to an empty folder (null) which can produce the above error
message. I ended up with duplicate folder trees in and out of onedrive and
one set of folders appears empty of files.
b. Secondly and possibly related some files were not accessible
(permissions) and it was impossible to alter the permissions.
c. Could both a and b be the result of a corrupt file index?
d. The above is based on observation since I am ignorant of how the
file index is created and where it is stored and how onedrive or dropbox
interact with it.

It seems there may be something in the 2.19.65-1 file that I have saved.

Help I despair

2018-03-09 Thread peter.gentry
Today Fresco on Laptop working Fresco on Desktop produces the -1073741819
exception error. This is the opposite of yesterday.

Again there are NO log messages except this error.

Moving a compiled file from laptop to desktop and Fresco will display the
revised file and play the midi. It will NOT complie the file.

This is clearly a Windows issue but it is driving me potty I am spending
more time trying to sort it out than working on my scores..

Suggestions would be very gratefully received.

That's entirely unlikely. You probably did not run Linux from a terminal

I suspect this is just because failed assertions now make LilyPond abort

I second Andrew's suspicion that it is not related to Frescobaldi at all. If
Frescobaldi fails you would either get an error pop-up or in severe cases the
Window might disappear.
If you can read about an error in the log window it's most likely a LilyPond
error.

Please compile your files directly using LilyPond from the command line, then
report what is happening.

Nope I did not ignore any previous error messages. Something about Windows
10 and file permissions may be at the root. I had to run Fresco with
Administrator Privileges in the past. One possibility that may shed some
light is that I have installed Kaspersky Secure connection on both machines
just before disaster struck (just to watch football).

I have since re-installed Lily from an old 2.19.56 installation package
followed by Fresco again. This time when I run Fresco a new popup appears
"running Lilypond this could take some time - nothing else happens.

I will try running from a command prompt but as it stands "Lilypond does not

Frescobaldi sudden failures on all machines

2018-03-06 Thread peter.gentry

the following behaviour.

The compilation proceeds for a while then halts with error -1073741819. This
happens on two different Windows 10 machines with different OS versions. It
happens when attempting to recompile old .ly files.

Frescobaldi error messages are notoriously obscure. I have uninstalled ad
re-installed Frescobaldi and rebooted to no effect.

Does anyone have any suggestions to isolate this issue. I suspect it may be
about file permissions but that is just a suspicion.

Windows 10

2017-12-01 Thread peter.gentry
Hi Matthias

I had used Lilypond on Windows10 for a while with no problems, however
recent updates have caused quite a few different issues and permissions is a
big one.

My lily files were all in C:\windows\users\peter\lilypool and the lilypond
program in C:\ProgramFiles(86)\Lilypond and Frescobaldi in in
C:\ProgramFiles(86)\Frescobaldi.

Everything worked fine but after one fateful OS update I found to extra
folders in C:\windows\users\ , PETERDESKTOP and PETERDESKTOP.000.

Frescobaldi ceased to work the solution I came to was to run Frescobaldi as
Administrator (even though my account peter is an administrator) somehow
these unbidden "users" had screwed things.

I have been trying to get some sense out of MS for days without any luck,
other issues also abound.

ADVICE "Do not join the Windows Insider program - unless you have plenty of
spare time and a good working knowledge of the Windows OS methodology"

Thanks for looking at it.

I should add that it seems to relate beams that cross bar lines in the
larger example (not include for brevity) normal service is restored after
the first bar without a beam crossing a bar line to the first note.

The process that produces a new line is not actioned whilst a beam is
active.

possible bug?

2017-10-26 Thread peter.gentry
Is it me ?

The following script when run via Frescobaldi produces correct notation but
does not introduce a new line where expected. I ran into this in a larger
score. I have racked my brains for a reason but cannot see any error in the
data. That does not mean there isn't one I accept.

Can anyone spot my error or could it be an obscure bug.
