I have an annoying conflict and was hoping it is straightforward to
resolve.
1) new document
2) add to the preamble \usepackage[cdot,thickqspace,amssymb]{SIunits}
3) add an ERT \unit{10}{\micro\metre}
You should be able to generate a PDF.
4) change document class to article (Elsevier)

Jeremy's suggestion of koma-script is good, esp. if you're in Europe
or want to use European typographic standards. In the U.S., or if you

math mode the symbols \neq and \notin are rendered properly when you
click or type them. But as soon as I leave the math mode, they become
rendered as /= and //in
