I have not tested it and don't know which of the requirements it meets
but may be a starting point.
It is very old, requires LaTeX 2.09 wich means compatibility problems
with some other packages.

In lyx, how does one make the vertical bar or line that indicates evaluation 
of an indefinite integral at 2 endpoints to calculate a definite integral?

I would think it should be a big op since integration is, but I could not find 
it on that menu.

What about enclosing this integral between delimiters (not matched), the
left one being blank, and the right one a vertical bar?

For the compressed list, use natbib and put sortcompress (minus the
quotes) in the custom option class of your document settings.

For styles you really just have to experiment a bit or google for
natbib styles.





I'm glad you solved your problem. However just for clarification, the 
sort in sortcompress refers to something like 1,5,3,2 becoming 
1,2,3,5 within a single \cite command. The compress refer to 1,2,3,5 
becoming 1-3,5. The references still appear in the order they are cited. 
These keywords do not change that.

As long as you know the script, you can always use an utility such as
Gucharmap to copy/paste the letters. In this case it would make sense
to use XeTeX (coming in 2.0), for its Unicode support.

aspell-en should be just fine. Simply select 'English (UK)'.

In Document  Settings  Language select Portuguese (and any other
related settings) and hit 'save as doc defaults'. Otherwise, save the
document in a temp location and then move it (using appropriate
privileges) to the templates dir, and have it available from File

Babel should take care of that as soon as you set the doc language as

I don't know how many people on this list were around at the time, but 
there was some discussion at the beginning.  Matthias Ettrich, who 
started this project, first named it LyriX (pronounced lyrics), but 
then got a nasty letter from some company that had a commercial word 
processing program by the same name.  So, he changed the name.  He had 
intended it to be pronounced as licks, referring more to guitar licks 
than anything else; not that it had anything particularly to do with 
music.


If you look on Wikipedia, both Matthias and LyX have pages, and most of 
the history is pretty accurate.  The LyX page mentions that the name 
evolved from the default .lyx filename suffix, which indeed was used 
even when he called it LyriX.  But my memory is that he also liked the 
connection to the music term.

The output results for my Lyx documents are pale and not sharp I am not sure
what would be the proper terms to describe the problem.  But as an example I
exported an open office document to a pdf. and the output looked different
from the the output I get from lyx exporting pdflatex.

Attached are the two files.

I am using:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
Lyx 1.6.9

Try changing the font of your LyX document. To do this, open the document, and 
then open the document menu and choose the settings item. Now choose the 
fonts page, and choose something for the Roman font.


To get the default font but less pixelated (what you call pale), choose 
Latin 
Modern Roman. Or, try experimenting with other fonts in that list. For 
example, 
my preferred choice is Palatino.

There is a  "timeline" LaTeX package including an example at CTAN:

I have not tested it and don't know which of the requirements it meets
but may be a starting point.
It is very old, requires LaTeX 2.09 wich means compatibility problems
with some other packages.

vertical bar for evaluating indefinate integrals?

In lyx, how does one make the vertical bar or line that indicates evaluation 
of an indefinite integral at 2 endpoints to calculate a definite integral?

I would think it should be a big op since integration is, but I could not find 
it on that menu.

What about enclosing this integral between delimiters (not matched), the
left one being blank, and the right one a vertical bar?

For the compressed list, use natbib and put "sort" (minus the
quotes) in the custom option class of your document settings.

For styles you really just have to experiment a bit or google for
natbib styles.





I'm glad you solved your problem. However just for clarification, the 
"sort" in "sort" refers to something like 1,5,3,2 becoming 
1,2,3,5 within a single \cite command. The compress refer to 1,2,3,5 
becoming 1-3,5. The references still appear in the order they are cited. 
These keywords do not change that.

As long as you know the script, you can always use an utility such as
Gucharmap to copy/paste the letters. In this case it would make sense
to use XeTeX (coming in 2.0), for its Unicode support.

In Document > Settings > Language select Portuguese (and any other
related settings) and hit 'save as doc defaults'. Otherwise, save the
document in a temp location and then move it (using appropriate
privileges) to the templates dir, and have it available from File >
New from template.

Babel should take care of that as soon as you set the doc language as

I like to have a lot of spit at the back of my throat and let it gurgle as I

I don't know how many people on this list were around at the time, but 
there was some discussion at the beginning.  Matthias Ettrich, who 
started this project, first named it "LyriX" (pronounced "lyrics"), but 
then got a nasty letter from some company that had a commercial word 
processing program by the same name.  So, he changed the name.  He had 
intended it to be pronounced as "licks", referring more to guitar licks 
than anything else; not that it had anything particularly to do with 
music.


If you look on Wikipedia, both Matthias and LyX have pages, and most of 
the history is pretty accurate.  The LyX page mentions that the name 
evolved from the default .lyx filename suffix, which indeed was used 
even when he called it LyriX.  But my memory is that he also liked the 
connection to the music term.

I mean, I already know what it represents (the number of optional arguments
of the command), but it appears to do nothing on LyX.

Lyx Users:

The output results for my Lyx documents are pale and not sharp I am not sure
what would be the proper terms to describe the problem.  But as an example I
exported an open office document to a pdf. and the output looked different
from the the output I get from lyx exporting pdflatex.

Try changing the font of your LyX document. To do this, open the document, and 
then open the "document" menu and choose the "settings" item. Now choose the 
"fonts" page, and choose something for the "Roman" font.


To get the default font but less pixelated (what you call "pale"), choose 
"Latin 
Modern Roman". Or, try experimenting with other fonts in that list. For 
example, 
my preferred choice is "Palatino".
