Good to know.

Richard I hope this will be fixed eventually because it will be very
Richard inconvenient not to be able to use periods to make the file
Richard names more readable. With hundreds of files, it is difficult
Richard to keep track of them with dos-like names.

This is fixed in 1.2.2cvs, so this bug will be gone in 1.2.2.

- ugly (you get one more blank line in the title). The right
- solution is to put this into Layout/Preamble (but you may break
- something):

- \def\@maketitle{%

- \begin{tabular}[t]{c}%
-\@author

- % comment out printing of date
- % and improper vertical space
- %\vskip 1em%
- %{\large \@date}%

Easiest way is to put \date{} in ERT in the date environment... i.e., on
the next line after author, select Date from the drop down box on the
left corner, hit Ctrl-L, type in \date{} (it'll appear in red) and then
view the output and you won't see the date after the title and author.

If it's a postscript printer, then there is probably some
non-standard/printer-incompatible postscript in your output --- this is why
the latest is not always the greatest. Star/OpenOffice have serious problems
here.

With latex, I found that ps printers (HP lasers) can't handle some compressed

convert or the Gimp). So I always convert images to xpm before converting

Well, if I am mistaken, GV needs the ghostscript to display anything.
So if gv works fine then you probably not passing the right parameters
to the ghostview when printing.

The similiar problem happens to me due to a bad EPS figure I included.
Try remove the recently added figures and see it that helps. Figure
out which figure that causes the problem, and do something about it.

One other thing, if you recently updated or changed configuration of
gs/gv/printer, you probably messed up something.

If still not working, post the document. There are people who can help.

Pb with lists

2002-11-19 Thread Yann Collete
Hello,

I think I have found a bug with lists+minipages.
Use this sample lyx file under lyx-1.1.6fix4.
Go to the first item, open the paragraph pop up and check minipage, set
the width to 50%.
When you do a view ps, it works fine.
Do a undo.
Try to view ps and latex gives a lot of error.
To correct the file, you must go to the second item of the list, open
the paragraph popup and uncheck
minipage.

Yes, the proper solution is to fix it. But then, the change is probably
trivial and neither the number of files nor the number of occurances in a

The solution is to use \nolbreaks{First M. Last}, and add

Another solution is to write First~M.~Last (using protected spaces),

presentation experiences with seminar.cls

2002-11-19 Thread Holger Zebner
Hi.

What experiences have you made with Lyx and presenations?
I don't value the suggested nesting pratice (see template on tipstricks)
since you spend a lot of time with nesting and inserting empty lines. I
also got a lot f error msg.
The slides.cls doesn't provide enough env. for my case.
What I did: I wrote the article on which my presenation will be baseed on
first and then saved it as a new file. In that file I changed the doc class
to seminar and put the page to landscape. I now have a good basis for the
presentation on which I only need to do some fine-tuning like pic,
headlines etc.

[newbie] seminar turned upside-down in ps-output

2002-11-19 Thread Holger Zebner
Hi,
I have I question about the seminar.cls:
I set the page to landscape. When I preview the *.dvi it looks allright.
But when I export it to ps/pdf the pages get turned upside down. I always
have to press swap landscape in the ps-preview. (I checked
seminar_faq.html but didn't find a hint.)
What can I do to prevent this?

Thanks.

That would work, but if you want all your quote environments to behave
the same way, you could try something in the preamble using \topsep
(which sets the space above the first item in a list and below the last
item). This might do what you want:

\renewenvironment{quote}{\setlength{\topsep}{2\baselineskip}}

The 2 here can be replaced by any number (as a multiple of the
baselineskip for whatever document class you are using).

Set the language to something like Welsh. This prevents hyphenation as long

Welsh. separation == hyphenation. ... as long as there is no Welsh

I guess the idea is to fool the hyphenation by asking for a language it
does not understand. Welsh seems to be the typical example for that trick
 ;-)

There is a simpler way to disable hyphenation:
 \hyphenpenalty=1.
This can be done for only one paragraph: write \hyphenpenalty=1 at the
before the paragraph, and \hyphenpenalty=50 after it.

It is also possible to disable hyphenation for specific words:
\hyphenation{foo} will disable hyphenation for the word foo.

I don't think using ERT is easier then setting the language via GUI.
Especially if you look at the start of the thread.

of now I can see a Title, author followed by the current date.

Easiest way is to put \date{} in ERT in the date environment... i.e., on
the next line after author, select Date from the drop down box on the
left corner, hit Ctrl-L, type in \date{} (it'll appear in red) and then
view the output and you won't see the date after the title and author.

The easiest way is to put \date{} in the preamble.

If it's a postscript printer, then there is probably some
non-standard/printer-incompatible postscript in your output --- this is why
the latest is not always the greatest. Star/OpenOffice have serious problems
here.

With latex, I found that ps printers (HP lasers) can't handle some compressed
image formats (png, jpeg) that have been converted to eps (with ImageMagik
convert or the Gimp). So I always convert images to xpm before converting
to eps.

If still not working, post the document. There are people who can help.

To correct the file, you must go to the second item of the list, open
the paragraph popup and uncheck
minipage.

Nothing I said here was a complaint about LyX. My point was that
renaming files becuase of a problem in LyX is not a reasonable solution.
Especially when the problem itself is not a big deal. My main goal was
to understand what was causing the problem. Now that I know the source
of the problem (and that it's not something to do especially with R or
RH 8.0, etc.), I can wait for a fix. If a fix never comes I'm in no
position to complain.

Yes, the proper solution is to fix it. But then, the change is probably
trivial and neither the number of files nor the number of occurances in a

NOT printable by ghostscript or real Postscript interpreter.

This is a serious problem. I have no way of using this document now
that
I have input it into 1.2.1 and output. I imagine that 1.1.6fix3 won't
be
able to input the LyX document.

Rick B.

Please see my latest post on this. gv displays the document EXCEPT for
page 9. There is something about the eps graph created by R that
ghostscript doesn't like. I'm at a loss to explain it because the graph
on page 9 is very similar to the ones on pages 8 and 10. I would be
happy to upload the graphic. I've tried recreating it and it still won't
display in the LyX Postscript version, even if I create a new LyX
document with only the eps graphic, even though gv will view the graphic
itself directly without any error messages.

 Hi,
I'm just learing to use LyX, so I'm sorry if this is a bit of a gumby
question. I am writing a largei-sh report, and have included individual
chapters as files in a master document. When I generate tables of
contents, figures and tables, the page numbers begin from the start of
the table of contents. I would like them to start at the beginning of
the introduction. Further, I wish to number my title page, abstract and
tables of contents, figures and tables with lower case roman numerals.
I have tried the LaTeX command
 \pagenumbering
to restart numbers at the beginning of my introduction, but this doesn't
seem to work. I have also tried to apply roman numerals to the title and
 abstract using the command
 \pagenumbering{roman}
and when this didn't work, I tried
 \renewcommand\thepage{roman}
 and this didn't work either.
 Any tips?

 James

I'm not a lyx guru, but my thesis is using what you want.
\pagenumbering{roman} at the beginning or in the preamble, and
\pagenumbering{arabic} at the beginning of the first chapter (the
introduction), in ERT.

Best regards,

Olivier.

I just noticed that using the math-editor and \mbox with ERT results in
bad spacing.. so in the final output, after Last and the next word,
the space seems a bit less than what's normal between two words.. if I
try adding additional space with the protected space _ then it seems

Hi all,
thanks for helping me.
I have got annother question: I am writing an article and the
spell-checker worked well , but only till
I made the first foot-note. If I want to start the spell-checker from
the beginning of the document,
Lyx will brake down at once. When I put the cursor behind the foot-note
and start the spell-checker
it works !
Is this problem known? Or have I got wrong preferences? (Lyx 1.2.0 on

You are correct.
The solution is to use \nolbreaks{First M. Last}, and add
\usepackage{nolbreaks} to the preamble.

Another solution is to write First~M.~Last (using protected spaces),
and in the preamble or text add \hyphenation{First}.

I guess the idea is to fool the hyphenation by asking for a language it
does not understand. Welsh seems to be the typical example for that trick

Now of course when I put the problem file in a separate LyX document, it
produces a postscript view and a pdf view. The large document, however,
still will not print or view page 9. I can send you the problem eps but,
unfortunately, I can't send the 20 page LyX document. The problem
appears to be in the larger LyX document and not the eps file itself.
I'm using the lscape package (in the preamble) with
\begin{landscape} and \end{landscape} around the eps file(s). If I
remove this, however, the problem eps still won't print or view.
