Some Layout problems
Hi all, I have some small Layout problems. 1. Inserting a blank page In the book-class I want to insert a blank page. I use a ERT-Box with two \newpage commands in it, but it doesn't work. 2. Beginning at the middle of a page On a new page, the text shall start at the middle of the page. I tried the command \vspace{3cm} but it doesn't work, too. I hope somebody can help me. Thanks a lot, Christian

I don't expect lyx to depend solely on KDE, but if it could take advantage of its features it would be interesting. Our experiences with KDE have been clearly different I don't have those problems you mention. I have also noticed a trend in kde to be faster and stable, not otherwise. I've used LyX since 2001, and it's been rock solid stable. I really appreciate that, and hope it isn't contaminated with DCOPisms and all the other KDE fluffNbunch. Again DCOP is a good thing for what it was designed and is being the base for further work under the freedesktop.org umbrella. Again if lyx could take advantage of this (optionally) this could only be a good thing. Notice that I am not saying that KDE is perfect (far from it) but it is a good technology and if lyx would benefit from being able to be more integrated with it. As noted everywhere in this thread this shouldn't be an exclusive feature but an add-on. SteveT -- José Abílio

Alberto wrote: Hi at all, Hi Alberto, as i subscribed this mailing list some years ago. I'm posting now my first mail, principally for two reasons. As first i'm italian and i don't speek very well english; as second i'm obliged to use lyx for my thesis...and i need help! :) I tried to use lyx some years ago, when i installed it, and now. I have mainly these problems: 1) i selected the book style, is that correct for my thesis? i'm not sure of what a style involves. Probably is easier to answer to this question seeing the other problems. (I hope...) IMO book class is o.k. The most obvious difference to the other main classes (article, report) is that books have real chapters that start a new page. I'd recommend to use not the standard book but either scrbook (that is book (koma)) or memoir, because these two are much more flexible. KOMA has been designed with regard to European typesetting conventions. 2) i'm not able to obtain a common way to see the page numbers; sometimes the page number is on the top-right corner of the page, sometimes on the bottom (the first page of each chapter, and in the index pages). Can i decide where the page number must be printed? This is a feature. There is a convention in book typography that the first page of a chapter has no headers and either no page numbering at all or in the footer. You can change this to whatever you need. The overall style can be changed with Format-Document-Page Style. Then You can do some fine tuning with LaTeX magic. Just ask! 3) i'm writing my thesis with some other people, but i'm not able to put their names on the authour field. i would like something like this: cippo lippo [EMAIL PROTECTED] lappo frappo [EMAIL PROTECTED] (on the middle of the screen) but if i put all these lines into the author field i obtain a line that is printed on a single line but it is too long so it is cutted at the end of the screen. But if i create more author fields i see only the last field (in the above example i see only: lappo frappo [EMAIL PROTECTED]) Does this help? http://wiki.lyx.org/pmwiki.php/FAQ/MultipleAuthors 4) I need the bibliografy!!! :) but i'm not able to do it works. :( As i see i could able to put into my thesis a biblio composed of some books (of which i must say to lyx the path to reach them), but i has not that books! I only knows their names. How can i put into my bibliografy the name of the books that i know, but that i don't own on my hard disk? Do you use bibtex? I'd recommend that. You can use a graphical tool (e.g. http://www.pybliographer.org with Linux) to edit the database. The database has file has to be placed in a directory where LaTeX can find it (~/texmf/tex/bibtex/bib/) or in you documents directory and then included with Insert-ListsToC-BibTeX Reference). Then Input-Citation... There's even a nifty tool where you can generate bibtex entries from an Amazon.com query (the site is in german, but that should not matter): http://amatex.informatik-uni-oldenburg.de 5) I not able to obtain a good layout with lyx of the comments to my images. Usually i see the image centered (as i want) but the comments that i obtain with wrapped box area is not just below the image, but it is between the text after the image. So i tried to put an hfill element after the wrapped area, but it does not work :( I use the wrapped area so i can put at the end of my thesis a figure list too. Can you send a small example showing the misbehaviour? Some other people told me to use OpenOffice, but i beleve in lyx! ...am i wrong? This list is probably not a good place to ask that ;-) Regards, Jürgen If you need everythingmy document, some other details, anything, ask! I will answer as soon as possible. Some advices will be appreciated... Thanks in advance Alberto

Hi Ruurd; I see Uwe has already updated the wiki page to reflect your 1.3.5 version including the configure.bat update. Also, 1.3.5 incorporates an updated configure which now picks up Windoze versions of Acrobat and Ghostview (AcroRd32.exe and Gsview32.exe) if installed. \frontmatter and \mainmatter does not work with pdflatex.
Hello, I am typesetting a book using Koma-Script Class in LyX. In this if I use \frontmatter and \mainmatter macros and then run pdflatex, then, I get error messages. But if I run ps2pdf it works. In order to make it work with pdflatex I included \renewcommand\pagemark{\arabic{page}} in an ERT just before the starting of front matter and \renewcommand\pagemark{\arabic{page}} in ERT just before the starting of main matter. Then pdflatex does not cause any error messages. But I want the page number to be set to 1 at the beginning of main matter. To get this I modified the above mentioned command just before the starting of main matter to \setcounter{page}{0}\renewcommand\pagemark{\arabic{page}} But now pdflatex causes error messages where as ps2pdf does not. Can anybody help me in solving this problem. Preferably I want to use pdflatex to get pdf output. Thanks for your help, Anand

Re: LyX 1.3.5 for Win32 released
Ruurd, - The display of fonts in math mode with Qt 3.2.1 non-commerical is much worse than with 2.3.0, but I guess someone already mentioned this. I hope it can be fixed somehow because it's very annoying. I have uploaded a fixed package to sourceforge. There might still be issues, but the new one definately looks better. thank you for the fast update, this package is MUCH better! Even the icon is back :) Although there are still some minor issues with the math mode (offset of subscripts, accents etc. is to large and brackets are too tall), it is at least now rendered correctly and quite useable, so I'm able to switch over to 1.3.5 for real. (I should mention that sed.exe is still old in this fixed package, I wasn't sure if you were indenting to upgrade it or not this time around) Thanks again, Milos

Next, go to the bin directory, open a DOS prompt and check which version of sed you have by typing sed --version. If it's 3.02, delete sed.exe and replace it with a newer version. Resetting Page Number
I'm using lyx-1.3.5 on linux with the koma-script report class. The preamble set up fancyheaders: \usepackage{fancyhdr} \pagestyle{fancy} \fancyhf{} \fancyhead[LE,RO]{\slshape \rightmark} \fancyhead[LO,RE]{\slshape \leftmark} \fancyfoot[C]{\thepage} %\renewcommand{headrulewidth}{0.4pt} %\renewcommand{footrulewidth}{0pt} (I got compile errors about the foot rule so I commented those out.) So far I've only begun the Introduction so I have only one page beyond the title page. That page is numbered (right-aligned, not centered) as '3'. So I pulled down TLC2 looking for the \resetcounter{page}{} command, but could not find it. I did find a reference to \pagenumbering, but the compiler got indigestion over that and spit it out. I also tried \renewcommand{\thepage}{1} in a couple of locations around the first chapter heading, but that too was violently regurgitated. I'm stymied. Is it something with the Koma-script report that doesn't accept the fancyhdr or page renumbering? What have I missed here that neither the fancyfoot or setting the first text page to '1' is working.

LyX 1.3.5 Mac OS 10.3.7 When trying to load a postscript graphic, my graphic insert says Error converting to loadable format and my console spits out the following: PreviewLoader::startLoading() No converter from lyxpreview format has been defined. Unrecoverable error: rangecheck in get Operand stack: hrsyr.gsf0 Unrecoverable error: rangecheck in get Operand stack: hrsyr.gsf0 convert: Postscript delegate failed. /Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/lyx/scripts/convertDefault.sh ERROR Execution of convert failed. I AM ABLE to use .ps graphics on my Mac laptop running LyX 1.3.4. I have checked the Preferences dialogues on the two computers to make sure the Converters appear identical and they do appear identical. Any thoughts? Many thanks, Hank Dr. Martin Henry H. Well, it is not exactly what I wanted, but it will do: I use \titlehead for the logo on the title page and \lowertitleback for the address, phone numbers and e-mail. Is there a way to center these two? I put the cursor in front of the graphic image and text, select Layout-Paragraph-Center, but when I view the .dvi, they're both left-aligned. Re: LyX 1.3.5 for Windows - no preview
Paul A. Rubin wrote: Regarding the error when trying to preview formulas (Could not fork: Exec format error), I noticed that the copy of the 1.3.5 port I just downloaded from Sourceforge lacks the lyxpreview2bitmap.sh script in the scripts directory. I copied the script from 1.3.3, but the error persists. In fact, I tweaked the script to echo a comment at the beginning, and it never got even that far, so apparently the script was never executed. Don't know if any of that will help pin down the error. Doesn't 1.3.5 use the python script lyxpreview2ppm.py? It was, after all, written especially so that the Windows world might have a hope in hell in getting it to work. I'd expect your lyxrc.defaults to contain: \converter lyxpreview ppm lyxpreview2ppm.py -- Angus

CV JMarc: sections without numbers
Dear All I am using JMarc CV class. The sections are all numbered, but I would like to get them with no number. How can I force that? Thanks in advance, Paul
What do I read? Many thanks, Rich -- Dr. Richard B. Shepard, President Applied Ecosystem Services, Inc. (TM) http://www.appl-ecosys.com Voice: 503-667-4517 Fax: 503-667-8863

The page number is right-aligned on the chapter opening page, but centered on the subsequent page(s). But, I'm still not getting any headers. I'd appreciate some help on those. Re: \frontmatter and \mainmatter does not work with pdflatex.
Dear Jurgen, Thanks for help. The problem is because of hyperref. If I disable hyperref it works. But how to make it work with hyperref because I want to have hyperlinks if possible. Thanks again, Regards, Anand On 01/06/2005 12:05:12 AM, Juergen Spitzmueller wrote: R S Ananda Murthy wrote: I am typesetting a book using Koma-Script Class in LyX. (I suspect hyperref is involved). Jürgen
Some "Layout" problems
Hi all, I have some small Layout problems. 1. Inserting a blank page In the book-class I want to insert a blank page. I use a ERT-Box with two "\newpage" commands in it, but it doesn't work. 2. Beginning at the middle of a page On a new page, the text shall start at the middle of the page. I tried the command "\vspace{3cm}" but it doesn't work, too.

Probably is easier to answer to this question > seeing the other problems. (I hope...) IMO book class is o.k. The most obvious difference to the other main classes (article, report) is that books have real chapters that start a new page. I'd recommend to use not the standard book but either scrbook (that is "book (koma)") or memoir, because these two are much more flexible. KOMA has been designed with regard to European typesetting conventions. > 2) i'm not able to obtain a common way to see the page numbers; sometimes > the page number is on the top-right corner of the page, sometimes on the > bottom (the first page of each chapter, and in the index pages). Can i > decide where the page number must be printed? This is a feature. There is a convention in book typography that the first page of a chapter has no headers and either no page numbering at all or in the footer. You can change this to whatever you need. The overall style can be changed with Format->Document->Page Style. Then You can do some fine tuning with LaTeX magic. Just ask! > 3) i'm writing my thesis with some other people, but i'm not able to put > their names on the authour field. i would like something like this: > > cippo lippo [EMAIL PROTECTED] > lappo frappo [EMAIL PROTECTED] > > (on the middle of the screen) but if i put all these lines into the author > field i obtain a line that is printed on a single line but it is too long > so it is cutted at the end of the screen. > But if i create more author fields i see only the last field (in the above > example i see only: lappo frappo [EMAIL PROTECTED]) Does this help? http://wiki.lyx.org/pmwiki.php/FAQ/MultipleAuthors > 4) I need the bibliografy!!! :) but i'm not able to do it works. :( > As i see i could able to put into my thesis a biblio composed of some books > (of which i must say to lyx the path to reach them), but i has not that > books! I only knows their names. How can i put into my bibliografy the name > of the books that i know, but that i don't own on my hard disk? Do you use bibtex? I'd recommend that. You can use a graphical tool (e.g. http://www.pybliographer.org with Linux) to edit the database. The database has file has to be placed in a directory where LaTeX can find it (~/texmf/tex/bibtex/bib/) or in you documents directory and then included with Insert->Lists>BibTeX Reference). Then Input->Citation... There's even a nifty tool where you can generate bibtex entries from an Amazon.com query (the site is in german, but that should not matter): http://amatex.informatik-uni-oldenburg.de > 5) I not able to obtain a good layout with lyx of the comments to my > images.
