I'm a new user of LyX and I have a weird problem with the vertical space above
equations. Some equations were displayed correctly in my document but in one
particular part the space above equations was too small. So I googled a bit

I would like to know how widespread the use is among LyX users of a
personal texmf tree. Do you have one?
There are the standard LaTeX distributions (usually MiKTeX or TeXLive).
But what do you do with waifs strays which are not part of these
distros but can be found on CTAN? Or personal

That should be the principle, but my experience is that if
I have recently installed Mavericks. Lyx works, but have found the the '\'
character does not print on the screen. Instead one gets a (inverted comma)
character. This occurs in general text, and the ERTs and in Maths equations.
Has anyone come across this, and do they know of a fix.

Yes. On Linux, this is usually trivial, since $HOME/texmf/ is usually
present in TEXMFHOME by default. So you set up the tree there.

of the equations. I removed all those and the spacings went to normal.
