converting numbered bibliography to author-year, using bibtex
Hi, I would appreciate some help regarding the following problem. I am (still) using LyX 2.0.2. I have a paper prepared with the above version of LyX, using the article template for Springer (svjour3). The problem is that I have prepared the bibliography in the simplest way, that is the bibliography items are written explicitely in the LyX document, and referenced by numbers. However, in the journal they want references by Author-year, and as far as I can understand this can only be done by having the list of references in *.bib files. I no nothing about BibTeX, and I am confused by the diversity of programs and details concerning BibTeX. What could be the simplest way of doing the conversion, and what exactly should I do, step by step, to accomplish it? Leslaw

Re: problem with creating layout file for some class
My attempts to open the new/converted LyX file cause a message (this is a translation; it may be not exact): "The class cannot be loaded. As a result of the error in the document class file: ijnam could not be loaded. A default document class will be used with a default layout. LyX cannot produce a correct result". The file is then opened, but indeed the file structure seems to be different from the intended one. I stress that in my opinion the class has been installed correctly, as it works with TeXWorks. Also, there were no messages of this sort previously, before installing your layout file. So, I would rather suspect that something has to be changed in the layout file. My inability to import the original TeX file into LyX (after installing the layout file) seems to confirm this idea. Leslaw

Re: problem with creating layout file for some class
Thank you very much. I have copied the layout file and reconfigured LyX, apparently without any visible problems. Unfortunately, an attempt to open the LyX file results in a message: C:/LyXTemp/lyx_tmpdir.gq2504/Buffer_convertLyXFormat. Ya254 is not a LyX document. Another attempt, to import the original TeX file yields a message: An error occurred while running: tex2lyx -f "ijnam.tex" "ijnam.lyx" and nothing is read. Possibly there is some version incompatibility. I have LyX 2.0.2 installed. Is there any way to solve the problem without installing a different version? Re: The persistent problem with svmono class and \boldsymbol font
Richard Heck lyx.org> writes: > Do you know if the problem arises simply using LaTeX? Sometimes > particular classes, > especially for journals, do redefine LaTeX commands, such as \boldsymbol. > > Rihcard I have wasted a whole day trying to figure out the origin of the problem, and here are my conclusions: I think now that this is not a problem with svmono, but a general problem with LaTeX fonts. The svmono class assumes as default the Serif / Times Roman fonts. The \boldsymbol command does not work for this font. Although the bold+italic combination is properly visible under Lyx in the math equations, it does not appear in pdf files, supposedly because there are no suitable fonts. All other fonts do not exhibit this deficiency, and \boldsymbol works OK for them. I have found a workaround that may be acceptable, although not ideal. The idea is to insert the following command into the equation: \textbf{\textit{XX}} where XX is the symbol to be displayed in the bold+italic form. This produces the desired effect in the pdf file, although the letters are somewhat bigger than other letters. I have a feeling that this problem should be widely known, so that I am surprised that noone has been able to respond constructively to my messages. Or, maybe there are better solutions? If there are, I would be happy to know. Someone suggested to use the isomath package, but this gives a worse result, in my opinion, than the above solution, as for the Serif / Times Roman fonts the bold form does not appear in pdf. Leslaw
The persistent problem with svmono class and \boldsymbol font
Hello, About a year ago I asked about the problem that I have while using the svmono class. I have done some additional tests and it seems to me that there must be some bug in the LyX template for svmono. So, if the author of this template reads my message, I would appreciate some help. The problem is as follows: I need to use the font \boldsymbol in the equation editor. This font is properly visible under LyX, but when I generate a pdf file, then the font looks identical as the standard equation editor font (that is the letters are not thicker). I suspect that this is a bug in the svmono LyX template, because the problem does not occur in the default document template of LyX, that is when the svmono class is not used. In the latter case the font looks properly in pdf files. I hope there is some way to fix this problem ? Leslaw

a problem with formatting acronyms in svmono class
Hello, I am using the Springer svmono class under LyX, to write a monograph. The class has a template for "acronyms", which allows authors to make explanations in the following way: XXX {blablabla} {blablablabla} ZZ {blabla} This means, that an acronym to be explained is followed by an explanation in braces. The problem seems to be that the explanations are not aligned to any vertical line, but occur in various places, depending on the length of the explained symbol. This looks rather ugly (as is shown above). My question is: can one do anything to force the alignment of all left braces at the same distance from the left margin? I would like to have something like in following list: XXX {blablabla} {blablablabla} ZZ{blabla} Leslaw

In such text one ALWAYS refers to equations by numbers, and not by any peculiar labels. > Still, making up a label isn't that hard, and it can make it easier > to remeber which equation you want to reference later. You can > of course just use numbers if you wish. Well, yes and no. If I use my own labels, like E1, E2, E3 etc., then I am in trouble when I need to add something between E1 and E2, let's say. The problem is that user-defined labels are not automatically updated, whereas the real equation numbers are. Hence, I have a mess in which labels are in no clear relation to the numbers. So, in conclusion, I daresay the LaTeX/LyX system for equation numbering needs a reasonable revision. If there are any LyX programmers out there, please do something about this!!! Leslaw
formula numbering
Hi, I am writing a book using LyX, and I have a question regarding the formula numbering. An exclusive way to add and reference the formula numbers seems to be via "equation labels". This works, but appears rather irritating when one has to invent unique names for hundreds of equations. Is there no simpler way? I do not quite understand why these labels must be used, in the situation when LyX seems to keep track of every new equation all the time, and updates the equation numbers automatically. It would be much easier just to refer to the various equations by these formula numbers, without having to use additional labels. Are there no plans to introduce such an improvement into LyX? Leslaw
Re: various fonts in math equations
Hi, I have checked my MikTeX files, and I see that the isomath package is probably already there (there are directories \source, \doc]latex, \tex\latex, tmp\packages, doc\latex\isomath, all in c:\Program Files\MikTeX 2.0 ). I also have the access to the \mathbf fonts from the level of LyX. However, I cannot get the italic+bold effect on my computer. Choosing the \mathbf function produces upright bold characters. The same happens when I choose \boldsymbol. But, I have also installed seemingly the same MikTeX and LyX versions on my laptop, and on the laptop I am able to obtain italic+bold, by choosing \boldsymbol, if I remember. I regret I am not really literatate in LaTeX to be able to verify what I actually have installed and what not. I have also been able to have 2, which can be done if I change the font to /mathbf in the equation editor. But I have not been able to achieve 3. Is there any way to do this? Questions about LyX files
Hi, For some time I have been using LyX to write some text, consisting of several chapters and files. I would be glad to understand the rules governing the files produced by LyX. In particular I have the following questions: 1) I notice that apart from *.lyx files there are also files with extension lyx~. I presume these are "previous" versions of the *.lyx files, produced when any changes are made to the *.lyx files. Is this so? 2) I observe that some other files are also created, the names of which begin with #. What are these files, and can I delete them safely? 3) I am not sure about the relationships between the *.lyx files and *.tex files. It seems to me that the *.tex files are not updated or used at all during the LyX operations, but all changes are saved in *.lyx files. Is this correct? If so, can I delete all *.tex files? I presume the *.tex files can be re-created by using the file/export command. Is this correct? Can I be sure that if I import a *.tex file into LyX, and then export the result into another *.tex file, the two *.tex files will be identical (assuming I do not do any editing)? Leslaw
multiline equation with a single number

LyX has some provisions for doing this, but I cannot figure out how exactly to proceed. If I press CTRL-ENTER within the numbered formula, I get two numbered lines, but I need two lines with only one number. If I choose the "multiline environment" I get indeed a formula with several lines, but no numbering at all. question about math equation editing

In order to achieve the effect, the manual suggests to highlight the letter "d", and then use the keyboard shortcut ALT+C R. I am trying this, but this does not work. After dozens of different attempts, it seems to me that the first problem is that LyX provides templates for some of the svmono class documents, but not all of them. One of the error messages that I get is: Could not load included file ...path...\svmono_referenc.lyx and Could not load included file ...path...\svmono_solutions.lyx So, it seems that these files are needed by the other LyX templates for svmono files, but LyX does not provide the templates for them, so that I am not able to create these files with LyX. If, instead, I import the book.tex template directly from the Springer svmono class (without making use of LyX templates), and try to view it in pdf format, I get other errors: "Package inputenc Error: Keyboard character used is undefined" Description: "...phil-DOI} Suleiman, Camelia, Daniel C. O’ Connell, You need to provide a definition with \DeclareInputText or \DeclareInputMath before using this key." This seems to indicate that the files with references are read this time, but cannot be parsed by LyX. Which installer should I use, and what exactly should I install, if I have nothing related to LaTex previously installed on my computer? I am asking, because I cannot see a relevant explanation in the LyX web pages, but rather some confusing statements regarding the relationships of LyX with MikTex and CygWin. Is CygWin necessary for running LyX? There are two installers, one smaller, seemingly without MiKTex, and the other bigger, with MiKTex, but the first one (not the second one) is stated to install also MiKTex. This seems inconsistent. My further question is: can I install LyX on a computer which is not connected to internet? Do the installers download something from the web during the installation? L.B.
