Re: new google docs interface, with wave backend. (collaboration trends)
Boys I made a polite question because I can offer a personalized and charge free SVN service to Lyx. Weirdly enough, I received no answer. Intilinux Projects, see here: http://projects.intilinux.com/ We are Italians but I speak English perfectly so there's no problem if u need anything: we can not only host u but also give u all the coding services u need: svn, bzr, cvs, forums, anything u need really. Now, can u please tell me if ou services are needed? For me, a main obstacle is the lack of a suitable web service. My Faculty does not provide svn or other VC repositories, and I did not find a suitable service on the web yet, where I can savely store my data in such a way that only selected people can access it. Hallo, no the picture is not auto fitting. You have to click on it, a preferences window will open. From there you set the dimensions of the picture: a nice idea is to set is to be large as a percentage of the written text. Play with preferences and you'll see! Vesion: LYX 1.6.5 OS: Windows XP Image format: png Didier

What if I have a transparent PNG and want the text to wrap REALLY around the picture considering transparency? Looking at this page: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/LaTeX/Floats,_Figures_and_Captions And studying it, sounds to me it's impossible to achieve such a goal, am I correct? Doable but not easy. Start LyX, then try Help-Additional Features. There, read section 7.4 Non-standard Paragraph Shapes Text can be typeset into any kind of paragraph shape, but you currently have to specify the exact shape through series of line-length commands. Now, LyX is software, so it'd be possible to extend it to find the outline of a png, and emit all those commands automatically. But nobody has done that yet. Not usable by me for now, but that's very interesting, I think this is an important feature for many kind of works, well, it depends on what the target should be in any case, but it's a good idea to be very flexible, so... I think this will be code one day maybe ;) And it will be a really nice feature because, since it's hard to do this kind of things in LaTeX, making it automatic will surely be an important step forward for a lot of people. I'd love this for example. Thanks and greetings, Luca D.M.

Re: Wrapping text REALLY around a picture
2009/11/27 Yago diazd...@ono.com I use normally the command \vspace*{}and I try a balance between the width of the figure box and the margin between this box and the wrapped text. With something like this: \begin{wrapfigure}{r}{5cm} \vspace{-10pt} \includegraphics[width=4.7cm]{figure} \vspace{-10pt} \end{wrapfigure} Uhm, this looks interesting though I didn't understand very well: can I use it as an eert to put into Lyx? I think this can be used instead of a floating figure? I mean, I see {figure}, do I have to put my full path and name of the figure inside there? In any case I'm not sure of what this is all about. Will this make the text wrap my figure tight using real transparency? That was what I needed. If u think this can be done, is there a way to ert this into Lyx somehow? Or how do you call this effect, so that I can google better about this? Thanks, Luca

Things must have changed in LyX language support since the last time I used Greek (a couple of years ago or so). I do not remember a Greek(polutoniko) language option, for example. Good to know the situation has improved, since I will need it again soon. S. ERT is usually not needed. The recommended method is to use Unicode input. For single words, there is no need to set the language. If the language is set, you can also type Latin and it will be transliterated. Accents except the ~ work too. Felice spiego alla Lista e poi sono da te a fine mail: Ok, his question can be resumed in: - Lyx doesn't support Greek language. Any other program I tried can, using extra greek fonts, that I have, allow me to insert in my book Greek sentences. In the latest email Felice sent, he's just saying that he needs to insert in his book some prays in ancient Greek. - So, basically, I'm assuming he's having troubles writing in ancient Greek and since I never tried to do this (I don't need to), I googled a bit (don't be evil with Felice, looks like he cannot read or write Eng, therefore, it's pretty impossible to use Google that way...) and found out these interesting entries: http://x46.deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=600471579CONTEXT=956797275.1420820487hitnum=0 http://x46.deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=523098925CONTEXT=956797275.1420820487hitnum=5 http://x46.deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=493287688CONTEXT=956797275.1420820487hitnum=6 Also, some clues are pointing to this page: http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/fonts/greek/yannis/ What I didn't find is a step-by-step page to translate for him, explaining exactly what he has to do to be ready-set-go. Re: problema di greco
- So, basically, I'm assuming he's having troubles writing in ancient Greek and since I never tried to do this (I don't need to), I googled a bit (don't be evil with Felice, looks like he cannot read or write Eng, therefore, it's pretty impossible to use Google that way...) and found out these interesting entries: http://x46.deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=600471579=956797275.1420820487=0 http://x46.deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=523098925=956797275.1420820487=5 http://x46.deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=493287688=956797275.1420820487=6 Also, some clues are pointing to this page: http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/fonts/greek/yannis/ What I didn't find is a step-by-step page to translate for him, explaining exactly what he has to do to be ready-set-go. Can anyone suggest him some tutorial or just tell him what he needs to do? I'll do the translation part, don't worry. Cannot export to pdf in Mac OSX Snow Leopard
Hallo people, I'm having an hard time using Lyx in Snow Leopard... I'm usin Lyx 1.6.3 right now because I cannot in any mode connect to the Lyx page and all relative pages (wiki, download, etc...), I don't know if the problem depends on that but I don't think so. I think there's some problem with Tex itself.. When I open Lyx and one of my documents and then click on the icon with pdf symbol, hoping for preview to open for me the pdf document, nothing happens. Same if I try to export the pdf or a vdi, anything, I cannot preview my documents (not even odt works). I googled a lot, downloaded TexShop 2.26 (I didn't have it before and all worked nevertheless) and nothing changed. Now I'm downloading MacTex again (very big file) but I don't think anything will be solved, there's something I'm missing. I even found this page: http://www.tug.org/mactex/faq/#qm10 and followed all indications. Something changed indeed. Now in Lyx I can see the LatexSource and I couldn't see it before (I never even knew it existed). So, any guess on what could my problem be please? greetings everyone, Luca

RPG Manual with Lyx?
Hallo everybody, I'm writing this because I'd like to start a new adventure in lyx now that I know a lot about this tool, only fronted-side, not code or LaTex side, sorry. So, I'm writing a Role Playing game manual here in Italy and my idea is that of trying to write it with an opensource software. Now, of course I know that for typography the best tool is Scribus. BUT, I love Lyx and I managed to create a fantastic colorful thesis for my Architectural studies with it. It was a 2 columns document with notes, pictures, etc. An RPG manual is something way more elaborated. WAY MORE. Have a look at white wolf's manuals to understand the extent of the graphical effort I'm going to achieve. The problem is, many things cannot be done, from my point of view, in Lyx to achieve this result. And maybe this is simply not the tool intended for this kind of result. I need 2 columns pages (OK) with the possibility to use a picture as a frame for the entire page, or as a background if you prefer. This picture should be changeable from a section or from a chapter to another. Say, this chapter has a picture frame of one kind, then changng chapter I can change the background picture again, etc. Not only that. I need to be able to put parts of a text, like a citation, a small emphasized part of the text, something to be outlined, into a fancy small picture used as a background for it. Fancy tables would be needed too, but this could even be used with a work-around: I create the tables in Gimp or something similar, save them as picture and import them into the Lyx document in a Floating Table frame (for table indexing later). Now, why I wanna do it in Lyx? Many reasons, the main reasons are: 1) I love Lyx 2) Lyx documents look incredible, very nice, very professional. Everything is automated and done for good, it is NOT a WYSIWYG and this is nice to keep focused on the contents. 3) I'm an opensource fan and leader of a GNU / LInux distro (OPenGEU) and I'd like to show off to the world the powers of opensource software. Lyx is in my opinion the best thing around in opensource documents managing. 4) Currently all of this is impossible to do in Lyx with normal tools and GUI commands. Probably the result is achievable with complex code to be inserted here and there. This is NOT the solution. People cannot use code, you can't ask people to. So, probably this effort will help Lyx become more powerful, many new small adjustements could be implemented with a work of this kind. Everybody, coders, users, everyone is invited in participating. I think this is a great occasion to have a powerfuller Lyx, able of achieving even more incredible results in many more fields of documents processing. Do you think this is achievable? Anyone wanna help? Remember I'm not trying to do this for my only personal achievement. It costs zero to me using Scribus instead and living Lyx alone. It's just that I think this can be a nice fight to try and win! :) Greetings everyone, Luca D.M. http://thedarkmaster.wordpress.com http://www.opengeu.com

Of course I can use it but the question is: isn't it better to integrate it in Lyx so that people can use wallpapers normally? In any case, I'll do it with ERT for now. 2009/7/13 Charles de Miramon cmira...@kde-france.org Luca De Marini wrote: Hallo everybody, I'm writing this because I'd like to start a new adventure in lyx now that I know a lot about this tool, only fronted-side, not code or LaTex side, sorry. But if you have complex and very graphically oriented pages, scribus is a better tool. Sure Charles, as I said, it is very graphically rich. Look at WhiteWolf's kind of manual for an example, it costs you nothing, just visit the site or have a screen of some pages in google! Vampire, Wherewolf, the style's that. And as I said, of course I know Scribus is a better toy for this kind of work. The interesting thing for me is pushing Lyx to the limit, see if it can do this work, see if it will make the whole process of writing a manual such a pain that using Scribus would be better instead :) Greets, Luca

Re: Donations for the Lyx project: Compare two Lyx documents
2009/7/9 silvio grosso grossosil...@yahoo.it Hello everybody, For anyone interested in the option to compare two Lyx documents there is the opportunity to donate some money to develop such feature. The link in the Lyx webpage to get more information is: http://www.lyx.org/Donate This feature will be developed by Lyx's developers as soon as It reaches the minimum money to get the project started. More precisely, the projects aims at compare two documents and generate a third document where the differences between the two documents will be highlighted using the track change feature (Menu Edit-Change Tracking-Enable Change Tracking if you don't know about it). So you would have to open the menu File-Compare two Documents then select the two documents with a file dialogue one after the other and 'voila', LyX will generate the third document and open it automatically for you. At present, there are 1270 euros available but the project needs still 730 euros to being accepted. In conclusion, if you are interested in this new feature and you wish to donate a bit of your spare money this project allows you to do so :-) just a curiosity. Why do they need money, or better, a certain amount of money? Are they using something like Rentacoder? Because if this is not the case, I do not understand the need for money. Greets, Luca

Re: Adding a non-numbered chapter to Table of Contents
Tha's fantastic, thank u very much, I missed that solution in the list! thanks again, bye, Luca 2009/5/13 Richard Talley rich.tal...@gmail.com I had this problem recently and it was discussed on this list. I have a Chapter* with a title of 'Preface' in a document that I don't want numbered (it doesn't make sense to number a preface as chapter 1), but I do want it in the TOC. The solution was to insert this TeX code immediately after the title of the Chapter*. \addcontentsline{toc}{chapter}{Preface} In your case, substitute your title of the Chapter* for 'Preface' in the command. You can change the word 'chapter' to 'section' or 'subsection' depending on how you wish the non-numbered chapter to appear in the TOC. -- Rich On Tue, May 12, 2009 at 6:19 PM, Luca De Marini luca.darkmas...@gmail.com wrote: 2009/5/13 Ian S. I was sure there had to be an option to add a custom entry to TOC... or a way to solve this in general. Any help please? Another problem is a little bit complicated to explain: I inserted the TOC and after that, the first chapter is the famous *Chapter I was talking about above. My second problem is that in the page where this *Chapter is, on the top of the page I still see the name Table of Contents.. this probably happens, because Lyx is confused, since there's no ordinary Chapter after the TOC.. in fact, on the next page there's Chapter 1, and on the top left of the page I can see the small name: Chapther 1 (the name of the chapter is of course on the top right corner as usual). So, the problem is that I have still Table of Contents on the top left corner of the page with the *Chapter. Cheers, Luca

If you have misspelled it (e.g., `\hobx'), type `I' and the correct spelling (e.g., `I\hbox'). Otherwise just continue, and I'll forget about whatever was undefined. Messed up page numbers - help please
Hallo everyone, in my girlfriend's thesis, Lyx is making up a little disaster.. page numbers are on the bottom of the page some times and on top right on other pages, apparently randomly... why? It never happened to me (I'm talking about the output pdf file of course, setted the doc to be a book). Can anyone help please? I just need every page number to be on the top right of the page. Cheers, Luca

Yes. Her teachers do not care about these things, they just think it's an error. They want all numbers on the same place. Adding a non-numbered chapter to Table of Contents
Hallo everyone, sorry for my mails but we are in a hurry and the lyx wiki is not helping me, google neither :( When I create a TOC in Lyx, it lists all the chapters, sections, etc. in my book. I can configure it from the document properties, no problem.. then, another feature in lyx is adding Chapters, Sections, etc. with a * simbol next to them. Those entries are not numbered or listed in the TOC. Now, I need to put in the TOC one of these special entries, a special *Chapter.
Re: Adding a non-numbered chapter to Table of Contents
2009/5/13 Ian S. Worthington ianworthing...@usa.net I'm new here myself but, iiuc, the difference between a chapter and a chapter* is that the former appears in the toc whilst the later doesn't. So, if you want a chapter* to appear in the toc, can't you just change it to a chapter? The most important difference I found was that a *chapter was not numbered, not that it doesn't appar in TOC. So, say that my problem can be considered as: how do I have a chapter not to be numbered and still appear in the TOC? Understand my problem now? If I convert my *Chapter to a Chapter, it will be numbered (Chapter 1). I don't want it to be numbered. Inserting the List of Figures and List of Tables INTO the TOC
Hallo everyone, very quick question: how do I have the List of Figures and List of Tables appear INTO the TOC? I just need an entry in the TOC like: Chapter x: page2 Chapter y: page10 List of Figures: page 50 List of Tables: page 54 Something like that because my teacher wants me to put the TOC on the beginning of the document and the lists on the bottom of it, and he wants the lists to appear in the TOC too of course. I was sure tehre was an automatic way to do it but at the end I noticed that it was possible only to put the bibliography page in the TOC, not the page where the lists are.. Please help me, I know this must be a simple solution but I'm not finding it in the documentation :) Bye Luca D.M.

Separate bibliographyes
Hallo everyone, I am in trouble again :( I'd need to set up two different bibliographies in my work. One is for the text itself and one for the pictures. The desired effect is to see something Called Bibliography at the end of the book, as normally, with a list of allt he entries. Than I'd need a page break and, in another page, Pictures Bibliography and a list of all the bibliography entries of the pictures. Each bibliography, therefore, should be separate from the other one, with a different name and referring to a different bib file. Is it possible? Or how can I obtain in another way the same result? I tried to insert another bibliography in Lyx, so I had two bibliographies and in each one I inserted a different bib file. The result was that I obtained two bibliographies, with mixed entries from the 2 files! :( I saw the sections bibliography option in the document settings... but I cannot understand how to use it. The only effect I find right now is that it just removes the Bibliography title and puts the bibliography inside the nearest chapter, right after the text... but the entires from different files are all mixed up together as it happens in the other experiment I tried... Please help me as soon as you can, Greetings, Luca D.M.

If I got your problem, right click on a picture / table and you should be able to set the maximum length. It can be a % of the page or it can be expressed in cm or what you like. People, please, isn't really any way of controlling the spacing between colums? I have to print the document tomorrow :( 2008/12/14 Luca De Marini luca.darkmas...@gmail.com Hallo everyone... this is getting me really tired :( On my computer bibliography works like a charm and it really is so nice to use and see, but today I finally managed to have my girlfriend stay sitted on the damned chair, to explain her how to use it and, of course, it didn't work :( You know, when you have to show something cool to someone important, well, it simply doesn't work having you look like a stupid geek or something. Well, now, the problem is that I followed the same steps you showed me before with her computer too, so, no jokes. I start by telling you I installed Lyx 1.6 over 1.5 as I did on my computer previously too (and on my mac it works nice, oh, we both have a mac). So, the first strange this is that when I insert the bibliography from the Insert menu, after I successfully load my Jabref database, in Style I see plainat of course, but I want apalike. So I click on the menu and... ta-dn!! There's only plainat... why the heck?! So I downloaded from the tex site the apalike package and manually browsed for that one. It shouldn't be necessary though, this is a problem, on my mac I see a huge number of entries already available!! (In case you where guessing, on both computers I installed the full 200+ MB Text distribution).. Then, when, in any part of the text body I try to insert a reference, choose only numerical [#ID] and try to generate a pdf, I see no bibliography at all at the end of the document and instead of the reference number only a bastard ? question mark without quotes... Of course, and that's cute, if I use the super option, the question mark is little over the words :) How swet... Please help me people. I tried everything I got. That is: - Removed and reinstalled Lyx. - re-executed the installer several times - eliminated the preferences folder so that lyx could create a new preferences folder by itself - tried the all thing on a new document - reinstalled the LATEX distribution package Nothing worked and honestly I'm out of ideas... :( Greetings, Luca D.M. 2008/12/12 rgheck rgh...@bobjweil.com Luca De Marini wrote: Thanks to everyone, reading the documents you linked, I managed to obtain the exact result I needed. Multicolumn... spacing between colums and background picture.
Hallo people, I tried to google for this a lot and to look into the wiki too, but seems like I cannot find it. I can ensure you I solved a lot of problems myself by the way :) So my first question is, is it possible, in a multicolumn document (I only managed to find the document on 2 colums option.. is is possible to create the doc on more colums?) to set the spacing between a column and the other? By default they are very very near, I near to set them a little more far from each other. the second question is, is it possible to apply a wallpaper picture to use as the layout background of the document? I wish I could apply a picture frame I can design. I know it is possible because I've seen this used in presentation files created with Lyx but I couldn't understand how did they manage to do it.. please help me. Greetings, Luca D.M.
