But the parent directory of this .exe link,

This information answers your question above. It should not be construed

It seems to work with 1.4.1pre1 (Win XP Pro). Mostly. I have a
recurring problem with symbols either disappearing or displaying
incorrectly (although the DVI is fine). So far, the following fix has
not failed: change the document font to default, save, exit the
document, reload the document, make sure IP now displays correctly, then
change the document font back to whatever I want and save again.

I have not seen entire formulas disappear, though, just bits and pieces
of each.

Hello Radwan,

I am glad you have joined the testing team which will lead to
improved releases for the host of potential WinLyX users.

LyX has a tendency to work better in English, but I think
that is not intentional and support for Unicode is scheduled
for LyX1.5 or Lyx1.6 (one or the other is XML).

Both testers, referred to in the top of this post, have English
machines and are not likely to find bugs with foreign languages.

If I find a potential bug, first I search bugzilla which has this url:
http://bugzilla.lyx.org/ where one can peform a keyword search,
in this case I used language which returned nine results. One
can add comments to the report to supplement the information.

LyX1.4.0 was very recently released. It was frozen with about
70 fixes available but not applied. They should all be applied by
the final release of 1.4.1. WinLyX 1.4.1svn; the executable you
installed is a pre which means it has had some of those patches
applied which improves its stability in comparison to 1.4.0

Since 1.4.0 is new, one won't find much discussion of how to fix
problems which have just been introduced with 1.4.0 on the User
mailing list. It is not easy to know how to sort those out. So after
checking bugzilla I search the archives of the Developer mailing
list but it is a while before their workarounds filter over to the User
list. http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=lyx-devel sometimes this archive
is down, so I use http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-devel@lists.lyx.org/
http://www.lyx.org/internet/mailing.php has a link to the LyX Wiki
which is also searchable. I usually search those first before I report a
bug on the developer list. Georg on the developer list has a good grasp
on all the reported bugs. I 've seen your problem reported before but
can't remember the details. If it is new, he or someone will direct you
to file a bug report. LyX-Tools-Preferences-Language settings-
Language, has a default setting for Language: Is yours set to French?

LyX137 is very stable and has received a lot of polish. The developers
have made Aspell compatible for both LyX137 and LyX14x and the
default installation of LyX14x creates a separate installation folder up
in .../Application data Lyx1.4.x, so that preferences are not confused
or overwritten. I think it is prudent to preserve the LyX137 version as
some functions may not have survived the major transition to LyX140.

Though this is useful information, I will look around for something more
specific to a solution for you, and maybe somebody directly involved
with your problem will correct it. Juergen is strong in this area.

Regards,
Stephen

Hello Radwan,

I am glad you have joined the testing team which will lead to
improved releases for the host of potential WinLyX users.

LyX has a tendency to work better in English, but I think
that is not intentional and support for Unicode is scheduled
for LyX1.5 or Lyx1.6 (one or the other is XML).

Both testers, referred to in the top of this post, have English
machines and are not likely to find bugs with foreign languages.

If I find a potential bug, first I search bugzilla which has this url:
http://bugzilla.lyx.org/ where one can peform a keyword search,
in this case I used "language" which returned nine results. One
can add comments to the report to supplement the information.

LyX1.4.0 was very recently released. It was frozen with about
70 fixes available but not applied. They should all be applied by
the final release of 1.4.1. WinLyX 1.4.1svn; the executable you
installed is a "pre" which means it has had some of those patches
applied which improves its stability in comparison to 1.4.0

If it is new, he or someone will direct you
to file a bug report. LyX->Tools->Preferences->Language settings->

Stephen

LyX uses several must have helper programs and during the install checks
to see that you have them. These programs get written to Path prefix in LyX
although your ghostscript program might be in a different directory.

C:\msys\1.0\bin;C:\Python24;C:\texmf\miktex\bin;C:\gs\gs8.51\bin;C:\ImageMagick

So did you start from scratch? Or did you already have a prior LyX
installation,

which means you would already have these helper programs installed. You saw
LyX check for these programs during installation.

For instance if you have Cygwin installed and it is ahead of Msys in your
Windows PATH statement, a conflict can arise. If you have all those apps
installed which I mention above you could try putting them at the beginning
of your Windows Path statement (use Windows Help if you don't know how).
That means they will be read first, and your installation should go OK. If
you

want spellchecking (C:\Aspell only) http://wiki.lyx.org/Windows/Aspell6 you
will need both to download and install both the data files and the
dictionary.

These helper programs are installed before or during the LyX installation in
order for LyX to be aware of them. If you download one of the optional
programs later, you will have to run LyX-Tools-Reconfigure; otherwise
it is safer to run the LyX installation again if a key program was missing.

Paul's question is probably on target,
Stephen

Works for me. Note however, that the way of inserting slightly changed. You
have to type

1.3 automatically converted \textipa to text mode. This is not the case

I see this, too. However, using

But did you uninstall Cygwin? Cygwin comes with a different version
of sh.exe and sed.exe than Minsys. So if you put Minsys ahead of

Cygwin. That means it will use the Msys versions of sh.exe and sed.exe
which are the correct versions of those files needed to install LyX.
Uninstalling Cygwin's LyX does not uninstall Cygwin's sh.exe and sed.exe

Thank you Stephen for your help. I did what you suggested and I put

Works for me. Note however, that the way of inserting slightly changed. You
have to type
\text{\textipa{...}}
or hit C-M twice to get in text mode.

1.3 automatically converted \textipa to text mode. This is not the case
anymore in 1.4, which makes life for mathematicians obviously easier.

With Qtree, the lines aren't drawn in, but show up if you do a ps2pdf run.

I see this, too. However, using
\usepackage[noepic]{qtree}
brings the lines back.

Is instant preview supposed to work with this version? When I open a
document with math fomulas, instead of previewing, they all disapear.

SH: I am not sure. The default for instant preview is off. Did you go to
LyX->Tools->Preferences->Look and feel->Graphics->Instant Preview
and change the dropdown box from "Off" to "On"?

Stacia: Yes, it's on, and it's doing *something*, because it makes the
formulas disapear as if it were rendering them incorrectly...

Yes, this works poorly in comparison to LyX1.4.0
Something is wrong.

Stephen

Some of the things in LinguistLyx don't seem to work
(http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/LinguistLyX)

IPA preview (but ERT works fine)
With Qtree, the lines aren't drawn in, but show up if you do a ps2pdf run.

Am I doing something wrong?

Stacia: Nevermind, got it working - I had to remove all the previous
LyX files in application data.

SH: That is a bit odd because the display is missing stuff for me.
And I thought LyX137 used .../Application data/Lyx while
LyX141pre1 used .../Application data/Lxy1.4.x so that the
preference files weren't supposed to interfere with each other.

Anyway, glad it is working for you,
Stephen

I think I originally installed over 1.3.7 so something got messed
up..anyway even though it's working it doesn't work like it does in
1.3.7 (see the linguist problems) so something's wrong.

But did you uninstall Cygwin? Cygwin comes with a different version
of sh.exe and sed.exe than Minsys. So if you put Minsys ahead of
Cygwin in windows Path, then LyX will read that directory before

Minsys ahead of Cygwin in windows Path. However the problem always
existed. I read that one can solve the problem if one makes "Sh
configure" in the Ressources folder of LyX and now it goes well :-)

Works for me. Note however, that the way of inserting slightly changed. You
have to type
\text{\textipa{...}}
or hit C-M twice to get in text mode.

1.3 automatically converted \textipa to text mode. This is not the case
anymore in 1.4, which makes life for mathematicians obviously easier.

I see this, too. However, using
\usepackage[noepic]{qtree}
brings the lines back.

I used to have to run "sh configure" all the time and mildly
complained about it. This last LyX release, Angus thought
he had fixed it. And it was fixed for me. So I thought it was
fixed for everybody and didn't mention it.
I made too big of an assumption.

Glad it works!
