Hello,

And thanks for the continuing help, Paul.

Are there classes that you know you have installed in MiKTeX but do not
appear on the list in 1.6.10? It seems to be finding the classes you would

Yes. For example, koma-script ist installed and non of its classes not appear
in the list.

Also, did you try reconfiguring 1.6.10 after you deleted the local user
 directory?

Yes, but it did not help.

I can't remember: have we looked at your configuration log for 2.0.0?

I have posted it on the 22nd of June, a recent version is attached.

There are some DEBUG: Failed to remove file lines in the file. As far as I
can see, at least some of the files it tries to delete are in the program
folder, to which the limited rights user does not have write access. Could that
be source of problems?

This looks suspiciously like William's configure.log.

The difference between William's situation and mine is that the classes appear

Actually, I can live with the situation for the time being, it just means

I'm not sure. The bigger concern is the warning that your LaTeX
installation is not LaTeX2e (which is nonsense). We can try an
experiment to see if failed writes to the program directory might be the
problem.

Log in as the limited rights user and open a command prompt in the LyX
2.0 user directory (C:\Documents and Settings\limited user
id\Application Data\lyx20, if memory serves). From that prompt, run

C:\Program Files\lyx20\Python\python.exe C:\Program
FIles\LyX2.0\Resources\configure.py

which should do the same thing that Tools Reconfigure does, but with
file writes occurring in the local user directory (where the limited
user has full permissions). Does that fix any problems with 2.0? (If
so, you can do the same trick with 1.6.)

That was good hint, thanks a lot.

The command line in my case was:
Z:\ntdata\Anwendungsdaten\LyX2.0 C:\Program Files\lyx2.0\Python\python.exe
C:\Program Files\LyX2.0\Resources\configure.py

It took a lot longer (something like 10 minutes) than the normal reconfigure
does, but now I have my classes in the menu.

For LyX 1.6.10 it was much faster (seconds only) and also solved the problem:
Z:\ntdata\Anwendungsdaten\lyx16C:\Program Files\lyx2.0\Python\python.exe
C:\Program Files\LyX 1.6.10\Resources\configure.py

Let me add that z:, where my user files are, is a mapped network drive.

So everything is fine now. Maybe writing to the user directory should become
standard for the first configuration and Tools Reconfigure?

We've had misadventures with network drives and roaming profiles under
Windows before. I'm not sure what causes the problems or whether the
developers have found a fix. Without knowing what the network drive
issue is, it's not clear whether writing the initial configuration to
the user directory is necessary, and I'm not sure what the general
implications would be. (Note that, on Windows XP, if you install LyX
for all users then the configuration would be written to C:\Documents
and Settings\All Users\..., not to any one user's directory.

At any rate, I'm glad you've got them working.

Hello,

I must correct myself:

One thing you might try is to delete the local LyX directory for the limited
rights user, then restart LyX (as the limited rights user) and let it try to
rebuild that directory. I think the directory is usually stored at
 C:\Documents and Settings\limited rights user id\Application Data\lyx.
(Unfortunately I don't have access to a Win XP machine anymore.) Just
delete the entire directory. I you have modified any bind or layout files,
you might want to back those up first, but if this is an out-of-the-box LyX
installation there is nothing there you need to worry about.

I tried that (directories are actually called LyX2.0 and lyx16). It worked for
1.6.10 - thanks for the help - but for 2.0.0 the problem persists. So it
probably is related to some change from 1.6 to 2.0.

rebuild that directory. I think the directory is usually stored at
 C:\Documents and Settings\limited rights user id\Application Data\lyx.
(Unfortunately I don't have access to a Win XP machine anymore.) Just delete
the entire directory. I you have modified any bind or layout files, you
might want to back those up first, but if this is an out-of-the-box LyX
installation there is nothing there you need to worry about.

I tried that (directories are actually called LyX2.0 and lyx16). It worked for
1.6.10 - thanks for the help - but for 2.0.0 the problem persists. So it
probably is related to some change from 1.6 to 2.0.

When you successfully run latex at a command prompt, you are doing so with

Yes.

Am I correct in assuming that if you log in with the local admin account, LyX

I should add the MikTeX itself is working fine, I can generate PDFs from tex
files without problem. As I just found out, it seems that PDFs generated from
LyX are also fine and respect the chosen class. So the only problem seems to be
that LyX thinks that the classes are not installed even though they actually

Well, we have this:

WARNING: Latex not usable (not LaTeX2e)

So for some reason LyX is not able to run LaTeX as this user. Or,
possibly, it is unable to save the temporary file chklatex.ltx to (I
think) the user's local LyX directory. We find out if LaTeX is usable by
trying to run a very simple script.

Is there some permissions issue here, possibly?

The chklatex.ltx file is being created because you can see it being
deleted in the configure.log file, without an error message. However,
the chklatex.log file is not created and fails to be deleted.

Hi,

I installed from this file, linked on the LyX front page:

I thought this was 2.0.0 stable with some bugs fixed, not RC3. Is that not

Hi,

I should add the MikTeX itself is working fine, I can generate PDFs from tex
files without problem. As I just found out, it seems that PDFs generated from
LyX are also fine and respect the chosen class. So the only problem seems to be
that LyX thinks that the classes are not installed even though they actually
are.

Well, we have this:

So for some reason LyX is not able to run LaTeX as this user. Or,
possibly, it is unable to save the temporary file chklatex.ltx to (I

The chklatex.ltx file is being created because you can see it being
deleted in the configure.log file, without an error message. However,
the chklatex.log file is not created and fails to be deleted.

Hi,

I installed from this file, linked on the LyX front page:
ftp://ftp.lip6.fr/pub/lyx/bin/2.0.0/LyX-2.0.0-3-Installer.exe

I thought this was 2.0.0 stable with some bugs fixed, not RC3. Is that not
correct?

Regards

Matthias

It's different than RC3. It's the third version of the installer for
2.0.0 final. Some bugs have been fixed in the installer itself.

2011-06-22 Thread Matthias Hunstig
Hi,

I should add the MikTeX itself is working fine, I can generate PDFs from tex
files without problem. As I just found out, it seems that PDFs generated from
LyX are also fine and respect the chosen class. So the only problem seems to be
that LyX thinks that the classes are not installed even though they actually
are.

Also, the textclass.lst file. Please check that these have the right

I'm out of ideas at the moment.

It's been a while since it's come up, but I believe that I've seen this error
message on Windows machines with Cygwin installed. Cygwin ships with a
latex.exe program that (at least in the past) gave LyX fits. Moving the Cygwin
bin directory after the MiKTeX bin directory cured the problem.

Matthias, is one of the MiKTeX bin directories the first directory encountered
on your system path that contains a latex.exe file?
