What do you mean, either by "fit" or "in parallel"?
For fit, the original nicd cell is a standard size with two legs soldered
in to the motherboard. The replacement nicd or nimh are the same size. The
same two legs fit in the same place the same way.
And there is no issue of mixing different type
I can't help but wonder if there is not a cordless phone battery pack that
might actually fit.
I know there are ones that use (3) AAA cells and others that use what appears
to be 2/3 "AA". The diameter to work with is 15mm or less. These are all NiMH
from what I have looked at.

Oh what a great idea using a cap.
Not just that. I had already heard of doing that, but the caps discharge
time is shorter than a battery, so I didn't really consider it a good
answer except for the fun of trying it.
But anyone can make themselves a REX now, and REX provides among other
things, o

I had given 80mah as part of the search term to use, because that is the
standard capacity of the current standard drop-in replacement for the same
size/shape/style as the old nicd battery. The nicd version

Yes, that's what I wanted too, after losing my custom-built
1991 386DX to a leaking clock B/U battery some years ago.
Totally my fault, of course; hence the overkill...

I went a little different route with mixed success. I bought some high
capacity capacitors. They worked perfectly in my 102 and 8201. But when I
tried one in my 200 it wouldn't turn off, so I had to remove it and go back
to the a NiCad battery. The longest test I tried with the AA batteries

but there didn't seem to be much difference; ISTR that they all did the job
just fine.

Nothing kills like overkill :-) I think you showed that before.
