It's probably worth replacing even if you get it working. I proactively
replaced mine that was working fine and was glad that I did. When I
removed it I could see the corrosion beginning that had not yet made its
way down the terminals to the motherboard. Incidentally, I ordered what
claimed to be a NiCad from eBay but ended up with a NiMH and didn't even
notice until much later. The NiMH is working fine.

I keep forgetting to test whether this is needed, but just in case it only
charges while actually powered on, you could try this: Plug in to wall
powere, turn on, go into basic, type "power cont" enter, and just leave it
like that over night. The command tells it not to power itself off after 10
minutes. Then it is for certain trying to charge the battery all night. You
can issue "power 100" to put it back.

Some thoughts. First, you may just need to let the NiCd charge for a but.
Second, check the protect switch on the bottom of the laptop.

If you do need to replace it, here is the battery you need.

I assume the Memory Power switch is on (I think it doesn't work at all if
it isn't but please check).

Machines that have been in storage often just need to hooked to wall wart
and/or batteries for a while and the backup battery will charge up.

But it could be dead and need to be replaced. That's a common maintenance
thing people are having to do now because the batteries are failing and
when they do, can leak corrosive material on the PCB and damage it.
