Thanks for this tip. Just tried it and it works on this 2018 Mini.
You’re right about the faffing around without the chimes. In the end I gave up
trying to reset the NVRAM with the wireless keyboard and dug out the old wired
one I keep for such occasions.

I thought on the newer models resetting the T2 chip covered NVRAM as well.

Apple Diagnostics found nothing, so maybe resetting the NVRAM will sort the
problem.

Does “etc” include resetting NVRAM?
Did you run Apple Diagnostics?
What model MacBook? AppleCare?

For some reason the ‘energy’ prefs refuse to stick, in particular the switch
on/off schedule refuses to work, despite having worked fine for the last 12
months or so.
I've tried resetting the T2 chip - unplug power cord etc but this allows the
schedule to work once and then fails
