Fairmount.app is a way around this. I believe it comes with VLC, or, I
think, that's where I got it from. You insert the dVD, run Fairmount and then
use DVD Remaster. For backups only, of course.

You want to use the control accent to go from file to file. That switches
windows. I'd be sure you only have two files open in TextEdit or Pages, which
ever one you have. I guess it's Pages since you said Word document. The accent
key is under the escape key.
