Rebecca, You should be able to check battery status in the Menu Extras area. On my MacBook Pro, a battery item was there by default. When using macOS Catalina, and earlier versions of macOS, you can set a VoiceOver Hotspot that you can use to read the battery status with a VoiceOver keyboard

Hi Aneta, To check battery status, go to the extras menu by pressing vo+M twice quickly. If you vo+right and left arrow, you'll be able to see things like bluetooth, WiFi and other things including clock and battery status. You can create a hot spot for it, that is a keystroke to speak
