Hi Kawal,
I have both a mini and a Mac Book pro. The mini itself is small, but once you

Thank you. I will think about other options then as I have not made up my mind

One thing to note is the mini, like all Macs in from the last decade or
so, has both analog and digital audio optical outputs in the same jack.
So given the right cable you can hook up the Mac to a full
surround-sound home theater or the like. So playing a DVD will send the

Hello All.
As you know I am hoping to sell my Mac Book Pro mid 2010 and two or three
months after the sale, I am probably going to get a Mac Mini due to the lack of
space on my desk with a magic track pad.
So, I have questions to ask.
Does the Mac Mini have batteries inside it?

I do know that the mac mini has a speaker but i don't know how good it is.
I know the mac mini doesn't come with a keyboard, but i'd think you could use
your bluetooth one.
Can i ask, wouldn't you think the macbook pro would take up less space then a
mac mini with screen?

I wasn't going to get a screen. At the moment I have to balance the Macbook on
my lap when I'm scanning and one of these days I'll drop it so as I've seen a

Hi. no batteries as far as I know. YOu need power to run the mini. I use a
blue tooth keyboard, I did use a usb keyboard to turn voice over on though. it
might be handy to get a cheap usb keyboard until you get your bluetooth
keyboard paired. As I've said in previous posts it does have a

Hello Kawal, Kliphton here. You and I have chatted over the years, and I did
the same thing you are going to do. Sold my iMac, and bought me a mini. Here
is what I know. The mini can be pared with a bt keyboard, you do not need a
screen for voice over to work properly, and it does take up
My memory about the new mini's is that the server version and the low-end
version do not have a GPU and that the mid-tier version does have thededicated
graphics processor.
So it might be that the only the medium tier mini has issues with no display
attached. Sounds like a fun experiment...
Mine is the middle tier version, the 2.5 GHz model with the 500 GB HD.
You're theory might be quite correct.

So this could be fixed only in the server version, which would make some
sense. Everyone else will still have to do the VGA to NTSC contraption I
outlined previously or use a real monitor.

Hello,

I just bought a mid 2011 Mac Mini last week. I am actually going to write
a blog post describing my adventures with the machine, but to answer your
question, it's actually yes and no.
Yes, you can run VoiceOver and work with the Mini without a monitor. This,
I know Apple support

I am a bit confused. Are you saying that plugging in the HDMI to DVI
adapter that my Mini came with will trick the mac into thinking it has
a screen? I can't boot mac for a while since my Windows Carbonite
backup is still restoring or I would test this myself.

No, this won't work alone. You'll need the converter box I mentioned, but
instead of the htmi adaptor, you will need a VGA adaptor. At least, this is
the set up that is working for me.

How new is it? The sluggishness and other bad behavior without a monitor
is well known but it sounds like the very latest models might have this
fixed.

Yes, I just bought mine a week ago, so I don't think it is fixed. It was
Chris who recommended the setup with the VGA adaptor and converter box. For
me, this has fixed the issues I was having and I am happily using my Mini
without a monitor. Apparently, this varies from person to person,
