When using the Time Zone feature of the Date Time System Preference, the easiest way to set your Time Zone is to enter your closest major city in the Closest city field. 1. Open your system Prefs. 2. go to Date Time. 3. Select the Time Zone tab. 4. Navigate right until you reach the Closest City combo box. 5. Enter the first few letters of the closest major city to you, possibly Jerusalem in your case. Your Mac will automatically set the Time Zone once it knows that city. I also make sure to have the Set Time Zone Automatically button to Off. This should do the trick for you. Later... Strange, I can't seem to get this to work here at all. Here is what I just did: 1. In a mail message I pressed Command+shift+s to open the save as dialog. This brought up a standard dialog. 2. Pressed shift+command+h which gave me my home directory. 3. Navigated to the file list and interacted with the list. 4. Arrowed down to the documents directory. 5. turned off quicknav and then tried pressing the right arrow key to expand the folder. Nothing happened. I pressed the enter key and the folder opened. Re: HELP!!! My Mac won't turn on!
another idea: put the install dvd in the optical drive, then hold down the C key during bootup. this will force a boot into the install dvd. wait for the optical drive to spin down (about 2 minutes then hit command-F5 and voiceover will start. after this, go to the utilities menu item, start disk utility, highlight the HD and go into the first aid screen. choose verify disk and let it check the drive. if something shows up in the pain (table) above that, then hit repair disk. at this point, you might make you already have a backup of the disk. this way, if anything is seriously wrong with the disk, you will have a recent copy to work from while you order a replacement HD. I have had to do this more than a few times since OS X tiger. -Eric On Jun 19, 2011, at 4:35 PM, Esther wrote: Hi, Ezzie, here's yet another suggestion: it's possible that you have a bad sector on your hard drive that prevents your Mac from completing the boot up. There is also the option to save your favorite points and to be alerted, when you approach one of them, for example when you are on a train, bus, etc... using sound, vibration, and even voice, if you are using VoiceOver. Furthermore, there is an interesting and innovative feature, namely the ability to explore the map. The same way a person who sees the map has a whole view of what surrounds them or a view of a specific location, those using VoiceOver can now have an idea of the conformation of a certain area by tapping the map with their finger. Moving your finger on the map, you can hear the street names and numbers pronounced by VoiceOver and make yourself a mental map of the area. This application is fully accessible and provides access to details that are normally unavailable to people who use the speech synthesizer and can therefore be particularly useful for the blind and visually impaired. The app uses the GPS and a remote service, which at the moment is Google. This means that some information may be inaccurate or unavailable at certain times (depending on the gps signal, the network and server availability). However, we are working to improve this information and functionality also using different services and mechanisms. The app is localized in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Dutch and Danish. For more details you can visit the app web site at http://www.ariadnegps.eu. To give us suggestions, report problems, request information, please send an email to mailto:info%40ariadnegps.eu. The app is available at: http://itunes.apple.com/app/ariadne-gps/id441063072?mt=8 or by looking for Ariadne GPS in your national App Store *** __._,_.___ Reply to sender | Reply to group | Reply via web post | Start a New Topic Messages in this topic (1) RECENT ACTIVITY: • New Members 5 Visit Your Group This group is moderated by Donna Goodin. Calibre Command Line?
Hi, folk, I've had someone sighted assist me in adjusting the preferences in the Calibre GUI to install command-line options. Now, I know enough about command-line to be dangerous. I have no idea, when looking at the user's guide, what the syntax is. I don't know whether to put the calibre, convert-ebook and input and output options all together in one command, or whether I will be getting prompts all the way. Could someone possibly spell out a sample code for making ebook conversion happen? Thanks, Teresa -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Hi, no, not really. Set your rotor to word if you wish to select words, and characters if you wish to select characters. Now, put 2 fingers on the screen and spread them apart to select text by the setting you've chosen in the rotor. Move your fingers together to deselect. After you've selected the text, turn your rotor to edit, then choose copy, or cut and double tap. Hello Guys, I just want to thank all of you for your suggestions. I've decided to use CCC. These are both really good apps and it was a really close thing in terms of deciding which to use. If so, it's still possible to boot your Mac from an alternate drive, and also access your original disk (any parts that are not damaged), if you've created bootable clones with either Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! as part of your backup strategy. To boot from a backup that's been created as a bootable clone, connect the drive, then hold down the Option key while you turn on your computer to start booting. Once the boot process initiates, you press the right (or left) arrow key and then press the return key to indicate that you want to switch your boot drive from the default. VoiceOver won't speak until your system boots up (from your cloned drive), but once it does, you can log in and take a look at your current hard drive and access or copy files. I keep a bootable clone of my system's hard drive for emergency recovery purposes. Generally, I'll make one of these as a backup action before major system upgrades, so I have a complete, working image of my system before the upgrade. This type of backup is different from Time Machine backups, which are more suited to retrieving individual files you were working on a few weeks ago that might have been deleted. Bootable clones of hard drives are useful in the case of sudden, catastrophic failures, but they take more time to make, so you don't create them as frequently. The two popular sources are: • Bombich Software (for Carbon Copy Cloner, donationware, suggested $15, free to educational users) http://www.bombich.com/ • Shirt Pocket (for SuperDuper! $27.95, but free trial download supports full cloning feature) http://www.shirt-pocket.com/ Both sources of software provide good results, but new users may feel more comfortable with SuperDuper! whose documentation goes into more details about how backups work. What this process does is reset the System Management Controller (SMC) which controls battery management, power button control and a number of other things which can sometimes, in rare occasions get confused. Function Keys in BootCamp with Windows 7 Ultimate?
Once booted into Windows through Bootcamp, what happens, on my macbook, and my mac eluminum bluetooth keyboard regarding the 12 F keys? for instance, if I'm using JAWS and want to get the time of day, first of all there is no insert key on the macbook keyboard nor the eluminum bluetooth one, which means I'll have to use the caps lock key through laptop keyboard layout. That's perfectly fine, no big deal in the least. And oh yeah, I definitely know in JAWS 12 how to configure that. NO issue at all. My concern is however, getting back to this example, would I then want to do caps lock+F12, or would it be fn!+capslock+F12? In other words, more simply put, are the F keys going to function by default as hardware, or as software? Re: Function Keys in BootCamp with Windows 7 Ultimate?
Hi, the function keys in windows should follow the conventions you set up on your mac. Shift f10 will bring up a context menu, although windows seven has conveniently offered you two different context menus for some of the main objects. One is on the applications key and the other is on the shift f10 key. It's also worth mentioning that key remap for macbook will place a standard calculator pad on the right hand side of your portable or bluetooth keyboard which would then offer you an awkward but functional insert key as well as access to the mouse curser functions of your screen reader of choice, in my case, window-eyes. Help with bold text?
Hi, I'm stuck. I've got to look at some information on the web where certain elements are marked in bold. So, I tooled around in the hotkeys list and found that control option T reads the text atributes of the current item, but when I press it, nothing happens. Then I went to the find menu and discovered that control option command B finds the bold elements on the webpage. So I tried that, and nothing happened. Any ideas on how I can get this info? too much. it's about £80 over hear for home premium x64. ultimate is about 300. In answer to the question though, microsoft officially only allow you to install on 1 machine, whether physical or virtual. however, this limitation has never stopped me activating (i've had to reinstall several times), and if it does use the phone activating option, wait till you get put through to tech support, and tell them you just rebooted your computer. Re: Help with bold text?
Hi Eric, Control-Option-Command-B moves me to the next bold text and adding a Shift to that moves me to the previous bold text. The announcement of text attributes (VO-T) tells me about the font colors. The easy way for me to check that this is working is to select the web page and send the text to a TextEdit window by using the New TextEdit Window Containing Selection Service Menu option, which I enabled and bound to a keyboard shortcut, so all I have to do is select all in the web page with Command-A, then execute my shortcut to send this to TextEdit. Looking through things in TextEdit makes it very easy to tell just what font is being used (size and whether it is bold), because I can simply select a sample of text and bring up the font table with Command-T. If I use VO-Command-B to find next instance of bold text (as Jon suggested) or VO-Shift-Command-B to find previous instance of bold text, I'll move through the file to each instance of bold text. If there's no further bold text, issuing VO-Command-B won't move me anywhere, while VO-Shift-Command-B moves me to the previous instance of bold text. I'm not saying this works on the web page you are looking at, but it did on the ones that I tried. Plus, only having to execute two shortcuts (Command-A to select all, and the shortcut I chose to assign the service menu shortcut) to get the selection to a TextEdit file (in rich text format) is a lot faster than mucking around in the HTML navigation, where you might have extraneous image elements, etc. If you want to set up the Services menu option for New TextEdit Window Containing Selection, I wrote this up in a list post back in March: Two ways to deal with the problem web site [was Re: Web site problems]: http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg42795.html This was one of two solutions offered to reading a really awful web site (you can read the previous comments by Anne, and the initial post by the person who needed a solution). Sending things to TextEdit via the Services menu strips them of a lot of bad HTML coding that affects accessibility, and is also much cleaner and faster than trying to copy and paste if you're really just interested in the text content. There are a few corrections to the instructions -- I think I incorrectly referred to the Keyboard Shortcuts Table as Table of Services because I was using old notes, and was nearly on my way out the door. Also, a quick way to get to the Services Preferences menu with all the correct items selected is to just select something in any application, and then navigate to the Services menu for that application (could be Mail, Safari, TextEdit, or anything -- just make sure to select some text or a page first, since the service menu options don't show up if there's nothing selected for them to operate on.) At the bottom of the Services submenu options, there will be a Services Preferences… option. Selecting that bypasses about the first 4 steps of the old instructions, since you don't have to start by bringing up System Preferences, finding the Keyboard menu, selecting the Keyboard Shortcuts tab, and selecting Services in the Keyboard Shortcuts Categories. All those will automatically be set, and you can just search for New TextEdit Window Containing Selection to check the box to enable it under the Services menu. I've never understood why this Services menu option has received so little attention on this list, since I find it really useful. I use TextEdit a lot for handling math symbols or non-latin text. But I also used to use this method to read problematic web pages, including back in the time some years ago when there was a Safari bug that sometimes didn't expose the page elements to VoiceOver unless you refreshed the page. Re: ITunes navigation
Ron, Often Ricardo's suggestion of vo command h does exactly what you want, even though you are not already in the html area of ITunes. It use to work 100% of the time for me. Lately, sometimes it does not work, and I have no clue why that is. Type the search term, press enter and do vo command h and see if you get to the first heading within the html area. It works most of the time for me. Mary Mary Otten motte...@gmail.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. system builder?
Okay, did a search for the price of windows 7 home premium. And found a lot of different results, and versions. What does it mean when it says system builder? In the description it says the exact same thing it says for the version that does not say system builder, just want to make sure I am getting the right thing. Plus the system builder is a little cheaper. Have to run windows on my mac because of some programs not working on the mac, and want to make sure I'm getting the right product. Re: Help with bold text?
Hi Esther, Thanks very much for this. I've never needed so much detail in the 15 years or so that I've been using a pc, but I could always get it with a keystroke if I wanted it. Now that I have this set up according to your instructions, it will do, but it is really really clunky. Ah well some things we must do. Thanks again. Erik Burggraaf User support consultant, Now posting occasionally on twitter at eburggraaf, 1-888-255-5194 http://www.erik-burggraaf.com On 2011-06-20, at 5:37 PM, Esther wrote: Hi Eric, Control-Option-Command-B moves me to the next bold text and adding a Shift to that moves me to the previous bold text. HTH. EMusic download manager
I'm a subscriber to the EMusic service. Last night I wanted to download an album from there, and I found that they had a .dmg file for the mac. The only problem is that I could not even try to install or configure the program. Everything said dimmed scroll area. The preference area wasn't all that different. I haven't yet looked in all the menus, but it's not that promising. It did download, but it created a folder on my desktop called My EMusic. I'd rather not have that folder there, but if I cannot configure that application, I'll just have to leave it there and periodically exponge it. Has anybody on this list explored EMusic and/or its mac manager? Re: system builder?
System builder (Or more comonly known as oem) products are exactly the same as the retail version but as you said, they're a bit cheaper. You're only meant to buy one with a piece of hardware that can be used to upgrade a system such as memory, although between you, me, the list and the rest of the internet, the oem versions will function perfectly well regardless of if you are buying any hardware or not. Obviously I can't suggest that you buy one without buying any hardware; I'm just trying to give you some helpfull information. Cheers, Ben. Just another idea: If for some reason that doesn't work, you can shift-vo-end, and then vo-arrow back a couple and you're there. It beats arrowing all the way across. Actually, I'd like the answer to that question as I recently had to replace my hard drive and as a result, lost my Windows 7 install.
