Re: a macbook pro question?
Brian, the term full sized does not relate to the number of keys, but rather the actual physical size of the principal qwerty keys, so when a manufacturer claims, full sized keyboard, this is correct on the proviso that the numbers and alphabet keys are all standard in physical dimension. Mary, the reason for the loss of the number pad on iMac's and things, is that a lot of folk now have such machines in their living rooms and other locations, and as such, they move the keyboard from location to location, I for example might sit with my blue tooth keyboard on my lap, in these instances, the overriding majority of users do not want a number pad, don't miss it, and in fact, to have it there, is just taking up unnecessary space. todays world is all about maximising space and foot print. this does not mean I agree, I do a lot of accountancy, and would rather have a number pad for this. An accessible, mac compatible midi keyboard anyone?
Hi, Please forgive me if this is way off topic, but, i'm thinking of getting a midi keyboard to be able to work effectively with Garageband, virtual synths etc. Now i don't have much experience with midi keyboards, and i've ever only had a cheapo one where you had to change midi instructions like channels etc by pressing keys on the keyboard, quite unpractical. I would like a keyboard with knobs, sliders and the like. What are your experiences with those, what brand should one go for? Which keyboard have accessible drivers for the mac if any? RE: a macbook pro question?
I bought a separate USB-powered num pad for my macbook, thinking mostly of if/when I get VM fusion up and running. I'm hoping it might let me do standard jaws commands, but so far, the num pad doesn't seem to work as expected, and what's frustrating is that I specifically bought an apple brand numpad to insure maximum compatibility. Either the numpad commander in VO isn't as neat as I've been lead to believe, or it just doesn't like the num pad for whatever reason. Thankfully, I'm only out about $8, but I, for 1, would prefer a keyboard with all the buttons, even if they had to be a bit smaller. Just my $0.2. Missy, there's probably a key on the numpad that you have to press to make it work with Numpad Commander. I seem to remember having to do this with mine. Re: checked state in iTunes
Hi Jeff -- Assuming you are running the latest version of iTunes, you can interact with each App in the list and VO will read the status of the checkbox for that particular App. Here's a rough list of the steps to accomplish this: Attach your i-device to the Mac, open itunes, interact with the Sources table, select your i-device, stop interacting with the sources table, navigate to the Apps radio button and select it, navigate to and interact with the Apps scroll area, navigate to and interact with the Apps Table, interact with an App. At this point VO should announce something like Interact with group, three items, App Name, checkbox checked. You can use the spacebar to toggle the state of the checkbox and VO should announce the change as you make it. Re: Thunderbird Email Client
Nope. Like Firefox they have not hooked it into Apple's accessibility APIs. Unlike the Windows version nobody seems interested in funding the Mozilla foundation to do the work for the Apple platform. At least Apple has no need to since they provide a perfectly serviceable mail app. Maybe that will change with Thunderbird 5. In the meantime, standard answer #7 applies - It's open source so anyone interested could make the changes to make it accessible. All you need is the right skills and free time. Executing from present working directory - was Compiling C++ in terminal
Let me dust off my old unix geek cap for a bit. The basic problem here is that the 'shell' looks in certain places to find things to run and usually your current directory (written as ./) is not in the list. Those places are defined in a shell variable called PATH (all upper case). You can see the current path setting by typing echo $PATH Each place to look is listed with a : in between, so you'll see places like /usr/bin or /sbin as various folders the shell will look to find a command to run. To add another item to the path list you export a new PATH shell variable. You could do something like this: export PATH=./ which would make your current path as the place to look for commands, but that would clobber all the existing places. So the more correct way would be to do export PATH=./:$PATH That adds the ./ location plus all the existing path settings. Now you should be able to just run foo from wherever you are without putting the ./ in front. Of course once you close terminal that setting will be lost. If you want it to persist you'll want to modify the .profile file located in your home directory. To jump to your home directory just type cd by itself. That should drop drop you in /Users/myUserName where myUserName is whatever your login shortname is when you set up the account. You can see where you are right now by typing pwd for present working directory. Files that start with a dot are generally hidden. You can see those by using the ls -a command which tells the list command to show all files. Amongst all those hidden files in .profile which you can edit with vi. Somewhere in .profile is a line that starts with export followed by the PATH=, a bunch of paths and then :$PATH. You can search and jump to some text in vi by typing /export which should drop your cursor right at that text. There might more than one export line in your .profile so make sure its exporting the PATH variable. Now you can just stuff your ./: right after the =, :wq the file and then exit and come back in. .profile is read when you first fire up the command line shell. If you don't want to quit and start terminal again you can just type source .profile which re-reads the .profile script. Hope this helps. Whole books have been written about the subject, and any general Unix or Linux book should mostly be applicable to OS X. Do you have a Bookshare account? O'Riley media publishes many texts ou might be interested in, such as Learning Unix for Mac OS X. Beyond this, search the Internet for Unix tutorials, they should apply quite well overall. As for the specific case you're wondering about here, the reason your program isn't running is that you're not quite using the correct command. YOu want a period followed by a slash, not just a slash. ./foo vi is a whole different kettle of fish, and again the Internet and literature is your best friend. I will tell you that to quit, you want to first hit escape, and then type :wq, without the quotes, to save your work. :q on its own will quit unless you have unsaved changes, in which case you type :q! to abandon them. Hope this helps, Zack. On Jul 5, 2011, at 9:35 PM, Geoff Waaler wrote: Making a little progress. If I enter just the command without a slash, I receive the command not found message, where as when I proceed the command with a slash, it indicates that the file or directory does not exist. When I enter vi filename I can see my file, but have not yet ascertained how to exit the editor and get back to a command prompt? I gather VI is better for creating a .cpp file than the textEdit app? If so, why? What is the process for building and running from the command line? Thanks again and best regards. Generating Touchtones on the Mac
Greetings, one and all, Up until recently, I used a service on Skype that would allow me to call a university switchboard, and enter the person's extension via the numbers on my Mac keyboard. As I typed the extension, I was able to hear the touchtones that were generated as I entered each number. For some reason, I am no longer able to generate the touchtones as I enter numbers. Did I inadvertently turn off a Mac feature, or does the problem lie with the service provider? If there is a way to generate the touchtones in the way I did before, it'd be great if someone could tell me how to turn the feature on again. When the feature used to work, all I needed to do is type in numbers on the standard Mac keyboard, not on any particular numeric keyboard. Usb or NAS revisited
Hi, As so often here and other places, i stumble upon a thread and sorta think it's not interesting to me now and go on, however i read in this particular thread and it placed ideas in my poor spinning head, so this is my question: Someone here mentioned that they had a Buffalo NAS, don't remember the exact model now, but are these easy to work with and set up and so on? I'm thinking about a Link Station Pro Duo 4 TB, but before i fork out the money, i want to know if it is easy to work with and configure or if i'd do better with another NAS or possibly some other solution. I want to use it as a central storage for my ITunes and the like. /Krister -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. RE: Is the true, or just a rhumor
I'm doing the same thing. I'm going to wait, hear people's opinions, hopefully listen to some demonstration podcasts and things of that nature. Also, I don't know if it will be possible to buy a physical disc in a store, but if that does become an option in a couple of weeks or months, I might wait for that. I know I can just make my own media, but I'm just old fashioned enough that I still prefer to have physical media when I purchase software, especially something as important as an operating system. Re: Generating Touchtones on the Mac
Hi Mark, This idea sort of worked, but only sort of: 1. Pressing Command-2 indeed permitted me to generate touchtones, but no matter how quickly I pressed and released a key, the tones were sustained and in almost every instance, the tones beeped twice. 2. Sometimes, although I know which number I pressed, a different number was registered. If you want, and if you have the time, I can demonstrate this the next time I see you on Skype. Any other thoughts? Hi, to each there own of course but, I'm not sure why waiting seems so attractive. If you don't like it, just pop back in your snow leopard DVD and re install that. IDK. If you know your going to by it regardless, why wait? I'm fairly confident Apple wouldn't release it if it had some catastrophic flaw. detecting c++ compiler errors in terminal.
Greetings all, Thanks much to Chris, Zack and anyone else who might be willing to spend some time getting me started. I compiled a simple c++ file via the g++ command. Despite receiving no indication of an error, the executable did not reflect my changes. My error may be relevant, so I'll mention it here. I changed an expression in the cout statement from intVar ** 2 to intVar * intVar and then the resulting executable reflected my changes. Other than changing the cout statement, I presume there is a way to know when a newer version does not compile? I did an ls, but there did not appear to be a listing file. TIA for any/all suggestions and best regards. Geoff -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: Usb or NAS revisited
Hi, I'll answer this on list since people are wanting to use iTunes with a nas. Like any other nas, the linkstations have a web interface that lets you control its features and setup shares. It does have some client software for pc and mac, but it doesn't really do that much; all it does on windows is map a drive for easier access. It has a dlan server, which is pretty much like home sharing except it works with more media players, but I'm not sure if it works with iTunes out of the box. As I said, if you're up for a bit of a hack, you can get it to run debian which is much more flexable than the stock firmware, so you should be able to get something sorted that way. Note that sometimes if you flash the firmware it will for some reason switch languages to japanese which can take a bit of time to change, but you shouldn't have to do this if you purchase one with the drives included. Remember to double check iTunes compatibility before you buy it; I would check but I'm not running the stock firmware. Hello Christopher, For some reason, I always thought one could completely reset all preferences on a Mac by deleting the preferences folder. Now keep in mind that I came by this idea back when OS 8 was the big thing. So, in no way am I suggesting that you do this but I'm hoping that more experienced users on the list will either confirm or correct this notion. Re: Generating Touchtones on the Mac
Mark, I love your answer and concur with it, completely. (Smile) Michael, Using Skype to enter extensions while on a call can be tricky. This is because of the latency factor. While I have never encountered this problem using Skype for the Mac, I often encounter it when using Skype on my Windows 7 machine. There are tons and tons of articles on the web addressing this problem. Sometimes, I find that I have to actually disconnect a call and then redial in order to have the subsequent extension numbers recognized by the receiving end of the call. I am not dismissing the fact that there may be something weird with your Mac but want you to know that you may have to engage in some tech black magic in order to solve the problem. One thing I will suggest is that you reset both your router and Mac before making Skype calls; also, make sure there is no one else on your network downloading anything. Re: Usb or NAS revisited
One snag with backing up to a remote time machine volume is to make sure that the volume is dedicated to time machine. TM will keep adding backups until the volume is full and then start deleting the oldest editions. Before I realized this I had tried to use a data drive that had my itunes and such on it as a time machine drive and suddenly found all my space was gone. I later partitioned the drive so there was dedicated space for each which resolved the issue. Re: Is This Possible And How?
Over a network you can mount Mac file shares on your PC. On the Mac you'll need to turn on File Sharing in the Sharing Preference and go to Options to turn on Share files and folders using SMB and then enable which accounts on your mac are allowed in from Windows. Once all that is done from your windows side you can just connect a new network drive with your Mac's address. So on the PC you would connect to something like 192.168.xx.yy\username and then chose to connect using a different user name and it will prompt you for the mac username/password. So my username is just cblouch so I connect to //192.168.xx.yy/cblouch where xx and yy are my actual IP address and the username is cblouch with whatever the password is I use on the Mac. After that you should have a new drive letter and be able to access all the files and folders in your username folder on your Mac. CB On 7/6/11 12:32 PM, Georges Zaynoun wrote: Hello! If the voiceover radio button is selected, select none and then press ok. 5. Press the Universal Access button again. 6. Select The VoiceOver radio button and then press ok. 7. You should now get a message from iTunes saying that VoiceOver will change the jesters on your phone or something like that. Press ok again. VoiceOver now should come back on. Re: Voiceover not getting enabled on iPhone 3gs
Hi Doug, Good to hear you've got this working, and thanks for posting the solution. This is worth saving. I was trying to look up the instructions Grant Hardy posted on the viphone list two weeks ago, but you got the answer before I could post. The relevant steps were changing the radio button for VoiceOver under configuring Universal Access first to None and then switching it back to VoiceOver (your steps 4-6) in order to get this to register when you sync in iTunes. Unfortunately, the viphone doesn't have the Mail Archive search functions, so it takes me longer to locate things I've read and recall on that list. The relevant part of Grant's post pasted in: begin quote Now, if you're checking VoiceOver and nothing's happening, try the following. First turn off VoiceOver by selecting the 'neither' option. Close the dialog to save your changes, then reopen it and reselect VoiceOver. At this point you should get a prompt that VoiceOver will change the gestures you use to control the iPhone, etc. and do you want to continue. If you don't get that dialog, then you know VoiceOver isn't being turned on correctly. end quote Cheers, Esther On Jul 6, 2011, at 10:38, Doug Lawlor wrote: I've got it fixed and here is what I did. Re: Is This Possible And How?
Ok, then how do I know which address did the mac get from my router? Thanks. Original message: Over a network you can mount Mac file shares on your PC. Re: Generating Touchtones on the Mac
Mark, I haven't experienced this with Skype, but I have a Magic Jack, and often have the same problem. I think the interference has something to do with the internet connecting with the land lines, cell phones, etc. I experience this when talking to people who have cell phones more than land lines, and it seems to be worse in the evening, when it is logical that there would be more traffic on the internet from my neighborhood. I have cable internet, by the way. Some times I can hang up and have the person call me back and this stops, but not always. Some times I can talk and it's as clear as a bell, and other times, not so clear. Re: Success! Help received.
Hi Johnny: There are two guides and a tutorial on your computer. There is the getting started VO tutorial, you can access by pressing vo-command-f8. There is the Welcome to Snowleopard, and also user guide all right in that handy-dandy little machine. If you press command-spacebar, you will bring up something called spotlight search, in which you can type whatever you're trying to find in your Mac. If you type user or guide you'll receive a list of hits which spotlight thinks are relevant. I found the one to one offered by the Apple retail stores particularly helpful, and, of course you have the best group of resourceful folks around you right here. Enjoy your Mac journey.
