I am really interested in knowing a little more about Apple Script. I am a Mac
user 2 years ago, but I have not developed any skills with it. Is there
something where I can learn about Apple script, for what could we use it and
how to deal with it? Thank you so much!

 Hi guys
I just had an experience which I would like to bring up. I am having a lot
of trouble with pressing the home key to get Siri, and basically crashing
Siri. I started turning voiceover off to see if that would help and Siri
does work better without voiceover in memory. The only problem might be if
Siri brings up a screen that you have to use an voiceover is off. What
solutions have any of you guys down for this?

Absolutely. If you can get a monitor, that is obviously the easiest
solution. In my situation, I don't have the space for a monitor with the
current setup. So, the converter box and adaptor fit the bill. However, I do
have a monitor around in case I need sighted assistance. I just wanted folks
to know that there is a setup that will work if they don't have a monitor
and that Apple is not completely aware that the newer Minis still can't work
well without a monitor. Please contact me off list if anyone wants the
actual hardware recommendations that were suggested to me and I now use.

Re: i love applescript

2012-03-06 Thread Yuma Antoine Decaux
Hello,

Applescript requires, at least at the beginning, quite some getting used to and
is not for those who don't like puzzling things.

If you really want to start figuring it out, there are plenty of beginner's
guides via google search. Try applescript tutorial or applescript for
beginners.

The rewards for understanding the language, as it is after all a language, with
dictionaries and grammar, is that you can basically do anything you want to do
on your mac, save graphic stuff on certain applications but that's even perhaps
conservative as you might be able to draw with expressive functions.
The best use of applescript is as follows:

Automating repetitive things
Automating between applications

Shortcut creation

Creative text

Bots and monitoring agents

Speech recognition enhancements

The list goes on. At this moment, i just found an applescript extension which
allows you to assimilate any scientific math functions into an applescript.
This might actually beat any scientific calculator as i can make it customized
to my needs.

Man, i really recommend anyone technically enclined to take a few months just
figuring it out. It's great

Best regards,

Yuma

Hey Scott,

Yep there's a lot of stuff you can do. I'm trying to keep focus on a few things

The list goes on. At this moment, i just found an applescript extension which
allows you to assimilate any scientific math functions into an applescript.
This might actually beat any scientific calculator as i can make it
 customized to my needs.

Man, i really recommend anyone technically enclined to take a few months just
 figuring it out. It's great

 Hi list,

I was just fed up with going through long stats tables and input everything
manually. So i looked for scientific calculators which did certain specific
functions for me. Then either they're not yet completely accessible, quirky
or just don't have the function, or again are on the iphone and well, it's
not the same speed of input right?

So back home, in an hour, i tested my applescripting knowledge to make a
script which takes any number of variables x and their probabilities, and
the script instantly calculates mean, variants and standard deviation.

 It just freaking works.

So now i'm thinking of applying it to every different application,
probabilities, NPRs NCRs, trigonometry, complex numbers, everything thrown
at me i'll script the correct app and unify them all into one big
applescript that will use some objective c elements for the UI.

Seriously folks, consider applescript as an advanced tool to do a lot of
 things quickly and efficiently.

The headache lasts a few hours after a month or two reading up and trying
different things in applescript, but the rewards are plenty.

Now i just wish apple would enhance the voice over dictionary for more
 power

What
solutions have any of you guys down for this?

tools for blind osx developers

2012-03-06 Thread William Windels
Hello,
Since friday , I have a developers-account for osx and I have installed osx
10.8 on a external disk to test with me macbook.
The main reason why I do this is to debug some voiceover problems before the
public release.
I also hope that I can provide a list with faq's about voiceover in 10.8 when
the os comes out for everyone.
But, for the developers here, I have some questions:
1. what is the best and easiest way to report accessibility/ voiceover problems?
Can I use accessibil...@apple.com?
I found also 2 links but I haven't test this yet:
https://bugreport.apple.com/

https://bugreport.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/RadarWeb.woa/wa/signIn

2. is there a mailing list for blind developers of Apple products?
3. Are there other projects where I can help so that 10.8 runs better with
voiceover when it comes out?
4. Is there some other interesting or usefull info I should know?

If you want, you can also mail privately.
Kind regards,
William Windels

2012-03-06 Thread irid domnori
Hi,
As a developer, for submitting voiceover's or other bugs, you should fill the
fields at www.bugreport.apple.com.
Consider also the fact that as you install the os in to an external hard disc,
you may have some other problems because that disc could be slower then the
computer's internal hard disc.

it's a good idea at this point to open bootcamp and create a driver

 Hi guys
I just had an experience which I would like to bring up. I am having a lot

does work better without voiceover in memory. The only problem might be if
Siri brings up a screen that you have to use an voiceover is off. What

lol! just kidding of course… :) To those here, I haven't met yet, I look

I always say that you are what makes these groups as successful as they are and

Hi, I think you would have a very good machine if you get a 4S; if you
switch from 3gs to 4s, as I did, you'll notice how fast the 4s is!
Personally, I gave up using some apps with my 3gs, as updating from
4.x firmware to 5.0.x, they became very very slow and slowed the whole
iPhone down.
Now I am again happily using all its functionalities and all the
applications I bought!
Except for siri, but just because it is not in my mother language yet
and it does not properly recognize if you do not have a mother English
pronunciation

Re: Is the I phone 4s worth it?

2012-03-06 Thread Jenny Keller
Yes but I think I have used this phone till it just can't take much more.

Considering I bought it cause it was the cheapest option I've been really happy
with it. It's just time to replace it since it pretty much contains my whole
life.

 Hi guys
I just had an experience which I would like to bring up. I am having a lot

does work better without voiceover in memory. The only problem might be if
Siri brings up a screen that you have to use an voiceover is off. What

Jenny, I completely agree with Buddy here. I actually test side-by-side every
day with an iPhone 4 and 4S and even there, the speed difference is pretty

Re: My thanks to those at CSUN and on MacVisionaries and VIPhone!…

2012-03-06 Thread Cara Quinn
Hi David and all;

The subscription process is the way it is because it prevents bots / spammers,
or at least does a pretty good job. :)

Yes, it is a bit slow, and for that I apologize. -As I said though, the
benefits for filtering out spam are quite good.

On the subject of Skype / Google Hang-Outs, that sounds like a great idea, and
listers are, of course, really encouraged to connect up off the list if they so
choose. So the two options you mention might work really well for people.

Anyway, thanks for your note and keep enjoying the group!

Re: changing interface language of the mac with lion

2012-03-06 Thread Søren Jensen
Hi.

I assume you have Lion, so the following steps should change the language:
1: Open the language and text settings in System preferences
2: Navigate to the language table and interact
3: Find the dutch language with your VO cursor and not just by pressing the
arrow keys
4: Press VO comma to start the drag and drop feature in VOiceover and wait a
few seconds until VOiceover says the process has finnished
5: Move the VO cursor up to the very top of the table and press VO period to
place the dutch language at the top of the table.
Now the dutch language should be at the top of the table.
Restart your computer and the whole system should be back to dutch again.

Re: Is the I phone 4s worth it?

2012-03-06 Thread Elena Brescacin
Hello,
and consider the upgrade operation is painless.
I mean: you can transfer your life from the 3gs to the 4S in a
completely painless way, the only condition is you constantly back
your iPhone up, both via iTunes, on the computer, and via iCloud.
If last backup was yesterday, and today you just got your 4s, just
restore yesterday's iCloud backup and that's all!
The only attention to take, is about connection: better if wi-fi,
during restore, as iPhone must download all apps from the app store;
what you do not get, until you sync it with your physical iTunes
library, are possible apps which have been removed from the app store
for some reason.
For the rest, no pain, no fear

Re: The best Mac alternative to MS Office

2012-03-06 Thread Esther
Hello David,

To add to Aser's explanation, you cannot choose MS Document formats to be the
default saving format type in iWorks, although you can export to these file
types, Pages and Numbers save in their own formats. Yuma asked about batch
converting from Pages to Word documents a year ago, and I posted an AppleScript
solution that can do this. You can find the description in the Mail Archive
post:
• Re: word documents on macs?
http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg43720.html

That post links to the AppleScripts on a MobileMe web page, so if you think you
might use them I would download these before MobileMe web pages disappear in
June, or before the owner decides to migrate to iCloud. (The links still work.)

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Looking for a good English Dictionary for the iPhone that does just a little bit more

2012-03-06 Thread Esther
Hello Mike,

I agree with Aser that jDicitionary Mobile's Advanced English Dictionary
Thesaurus app would be a good choice for you; I actually tried typing in your
sample word search of Potemkin as a test. What happens is that the app
filters the results as you type, so you if you're not sure of the spelling, you
can type the beginning of the word and start reading off matches in the results
listed in the lines below the search text field, then double tap to select the
entry you want.

I'm going to paste in the text from a two-year old list post I wrote about
dictionary apps. It includes a description of The Advanced English Dictionary
Thesaurus, and also of the WordBook app. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary app
was not released at that time, in case you're wondering why it isn't included.
I would add that I no longer recommend getting the Dictionary.com app, at least
for the iPhone, because over a year ago they changed the app so it is more
difficult to use with VoiceOver. The iPad version continued to work OK for
some time after. I haven't updated the iPad version of the Dictionary.com
app, because I suspect the same issues are now present.

begin quote
From: Esther
Subject:Summary on Accessible Dictionary apps for the
iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad [was Re: Looking for a dictionary]
Date: May 7, 2010

Hi Paul,

comment: Dictionary.com app for iPhone is no longer recommended as
accessibility with VoiceOver is not as good now
I agree with Enjie that the Dictionary.com app is a very good choice for
iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad users who use VoiceOver. It's free, has nearly
1,000,000 words and 90,000 synonyms, a thesaurus, and will pronounce words if
you double tap on the link image that follows each word. Furthermore, all
these functions work (excerpt for the pronunciation of the word) whether or not
you have an internet connection. There's a nice history function, and also a
Word of the Day, and it's all accessible.

To answer your question, the WordBook Dictionary is accessible, also has a
thesaurus, is modestly priced ($1.99 for iPhone or iPod Touch; $2.99 for the
iPad) and has some nice functions like allowing you to choose the voice used
for pronunciation. It also has some nice links to other web dictionaries.
bookmarking features, word of the day, etc. But what makes this app rather
annoying for the VoiceOver user is the fact that the basic definition portion
of the dictionary has linked nearly all the words in each definition. Although
you can double tap any one of these definitions to go to the linked entry, the
definition gets read out by VoiceOver with link following nearly every word.
You might want to explore this yourself to see whether the added features
outweigh the annoyances. I think that the voice selection gets turned on when
you do a search and then you are given options for the voice to choose for the
pronunciation under the audio button.

The other dictionary app that I've used is the Advanced English Dictionary
Thesaurus ($0.99 or £0.59) by jDictionary Mobile, the same people who produce
The World Factbook 2010 ($0.99). The Advanced English Dictionary is more of
interest (to me) for its thesaurus use and links to related terms that come up
in general contexts. These could be, for instance, cooking terms, popular
science words, economic terms, etc. (Linked terms are kept under a separate
entry, so definitions are read out fine.) Here's a link to a review of
jDicitionary Mobile's Advanced English Dictionary Thesaurus app that outlines
some of the strengths in the way this app links to related words:
http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2009/09/19/review_iphone_app_advanced_english_dictionary/print.html
Their quick summary: AED cleverly fits words into a structure of meaning
rather than a simple alphabetical list. One for explorers of language rather
than crossword buffs.

I'd suggest that most list users will want to check out the freeDictionary.com
app first, and leave these other apps for additional exploration.

Here are links to the apps mentioned in this post. All should be available
internationally, All apps for the iPhone work on iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad
(according to the store listings). However, the WordBook andDictionary.com apps
have separate versions optimized to use the larger screen of the iPad. Please
note that the Dictionary.com apps in particular can take a while to load --
they're over 42 MB and best downloaded over a WiFi connection. Remember that
all these apps work independent of a network connection, so the database must
be held on the device.

Lion Installation Question

When I start the install sequence, how can I unsure a variation of Voiceover is

If there is a step-by-step guide on installing Lion with Voiceover its

Re: Lion Installation Question

2012-03-06 Thread Mr. L. Alexander
lol love that bit. well done.

It's a straight foward Command F5 at bootup. from there, it's a pretty straight
forward navigation.

it's worth noting as an advisory that if installing lion, I'd recommend a clean
install rather than an upgrade as there are some known bugs around regarding
stability.

so back up all your essential files or data you want to keep, then boot the
lion installer, wipe the HDD and start afresh, this is of course assuming that
your installation media ( OS X lion is on a DVD if burnt or mounted to a pen
drive.

If last backup was yesterday, and today you just got your 4s, just

The only attention to take, is about connection: better if wi-fi,

Re: voiceover keyboard reference?

2012-03-06 Thread Esther
Hi Erik,

How about just bringing up the VoiceOver Getting Started Guide and going to
Appendix A that lists commands and gestures? If I navigate to Appendix A, and
then copy the URL in Safari, it's:
http://help.apple.com/voiceover/info/guide/10.7/English.lproj/_1131.html

If I select all with Command-A and use the New TextEdit Window Containing
Selection services menu option (that I've previously activated under System
Preferences Keyboard Keyboard Shortcuts after selecting Services in the
Shortcut Categories table and then checking this option in the Shortcuts
table), I can save this as an RTF file from TextEdit.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Guys,
I finally got it working. While Daisy Worm was a no go for this,

Re: Looking for a good English Dictionary for the iPhone that does just a little bit more

Hello Esther and Aser,

I would very much like to thank the two of you for your recommendations. I
have downloaded the jDictionary App and though I haven't done too much

complaints I might have certainly won't be accessibility-related.

Again thanks so much to both of you!

 Hello Mike,

I agree with Aser that jDicitionary Mobile's Advanced English Dictionary

filters the results as you type, so you if you're not sure of the spelling,
you can type the beginning of the word and start reading off matches in the
results listed in the lines below the search text field, then double tap to
 select the entry you want.

I'm going to paste in the text from a two-year old list post I wrote about
dictionary apps. It includes a description of The Advanced English
Dictionary Thesaurus, and also of the WordBook app. The Merriam-Webster
Dictionary app was not released at that time, in case you're wondering why it
isn't included. I would add that I no longer recommend getting the
Dictionary.com app, at least for the iPhone, because over a year ago they
changed the app so it is more difficult to use with VoiceOver. The iPad
version continued to work OK for some time after. I haven't updated the
iPad version of the Dictionary.com app, because I suspect the same issues are
 now present.

 Hi Paul,

comment: Dictionary.com app for iPhone is no longer recommended as
accessibility with VoiceOver is not as good now
I agree with Enjie that the Dictionary.com app is a very good choice for
iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad users who use VoiceOver. It's free, has nearly
1,000,000 words and 90,000 synonyms, a thesaurus, and will pronounce words if
you double tap on the link image that follows each word. Furthermore, all
these functions work (excerpt for the pronunciation of the word) whether or
not you have an internet connection. There's a nice history function, and
also a Word of the Day, and it's all accessible.

Although you can double tap any one of these definitions to go to the linked
entry, the definition gets read out by VoiceOver with link following nearly
every word. You might want to explore this yourself to see whether the added
features outweigh the annoyances. I think that the voice selection gets
turned on when you do a search and then you are given options for the voice
to choose for the pronunciation under the audio button.

The other dictionary app that I've used is the Advanced English Dictionary
Thesaurus ($0.99 or £0.59) by jDictionary Mobile, the same people who produce
The World Factbook 2010 ($0.99). The Advanced English Dictionary is more of
interest (to me) for its thesaurus use and links to related terms that come
up in general contexts. These could be, for instance, cooking terms, popular
science words, economic terms, etc. (Linked terms are kept under a separate
entry, so definitions are read out fine.) Here's a link to a review of
jDicitionary Mobile's Advanced English Dictionary Thesaurus app that
outlines some of the strengths in the way this app links to related words:
 http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2009/09/19/review_iphone_app_advanced_english_dictionary/print.html
Their quick summary: AED cleverly fits words into a structure of meaning
rather than a simple alphabetical list. One for explorers of language rather
 than crossword buffs.

I'd suggest that most list users will want to check out the
freeDictionary.com app first, and leave these other apps for additional
 exploration.

Here are links to the apps mentioned in this post. All should be available
internationally, All apps for the iPhone work on iPhone, iPod Touch, and
iPad (according to the store listings). However, the WordBook
andDictionary.com apps have separate versions optimized to use the larger
screen of the iPad. Please note that the Dictionary.com apps in particular
can take a while to load -- they're over

Re: moveing the itunes library

2012-03-06 Thread Chris Blouch
Just grab the whole iTunes folder from your current drive and copy it to
the external. Then hold down the option key when you launch iTunes to
make it ask you where the library is. Point it to your new copy on the
external drive and you're done. After that you can toss the old iTunes
folder that you copied into the trash. Note that if you don't have your
external hard drive and you launch iTunes it won't be able to find the
iTunes library and will revert back to your internal hard drive. Then
the next time your external drive is hooked up again you'll need to
re-point iTunes to the external iTunes folder. There was discussion of
work arounds previously on this list if you are concerned about having
to re-point iTunes when the external drive is not present.

Re: Turkish language and the Mac.

2012-03-06 Thread Simon Cavendish
Nektarios,

First of all, you need to go to system preferences and choose language and
text button and then the text input tab, which is the last tab. If you move to
the right, you will come across a table of all available keyboards. You need to
check the box in the first column, next to the Turkish keyboard. Once you have
more than one keyboard enabled, unless you have done that before, it would be
helpful if you enabled text input icon to appear in your menu bar so that you
can always go there with control f8 and change your keyboards. There is a way
of changing your keyboards by using a shortcut key but you may already know
this. If not, contact me, and I shall try to help. I've just tried to speak to
you on Skype, but as before, when I try to connect to you, the connection gets
dropped.

Hope this helps. Good luck with Turkish.

When I start the install sequence, how can I unsure a variation of Voiceover
is active, so I can monitor the installation process?
If there is a step-by-step guide on installing Lion with Voiceover its
 reference would be greatly appreciated.

Textual IRC client

A long time ago, someone recommended this IRC client, and I just bought it.
Only one problem. I can't figure out where chats are. I see channel info (with
like the channel banner and stuff), list of channel participants in a table,
but can't find chats. I don't suppose it's possible to have it read off chats
automagically, is there? Any tips for this client would be appreciated.

Tables in Word Documents on the Mac

2012-03-06 Thread Henry D. Hollithron
Good Day:

Firstly, this being my first post to this list, I should probably give
a brief introduction. As you can tell from the name field, my name is Henry
Hollithron. I am a college student, and las October, I acquired a MacBook Pro.
As you might expect, Mac OS has become my primary operating system, and though
I still have my windows computers, I prefer, if possible, to accomplish what I
wish on, what to me, is a much more intuitive system. In any case, I have been
wondering for quite some time whether there is any word processor currently
available which can handle tables. As I said earlier, I am a college student,
and I some times receive documents with tables. My experience thus far has been
that neither Nisus Writer Pro nor Pages even acknowledges the tables. As for
Text Edit, I can at least get the content from the tables, but if I have to
make some modifications to the file in question and send it back, the table
formatting disappears, which is a problem. From checking the list archives, I
have gotten the impression that there is not currently a way to get tables to
work. Am I correct? I would be glad to be told that I am wrong, since I'd
rather not have to add working with tables to the very small list of tasks for
which I still need to use Windows. Any help is much appreciated.

Thank You:
Henry

Re: Tables in Word Documents on the Mac

2012-03-06 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi Henry.
If you are creating your own table, then you could, if you are using tables
with equal width columns and rows do it through Numbers. I got it to work in
Pages, and it would have been fine if I didn't have to export the file to Word.
That's where things got messed up for me.

Actually, I not real fond of doing tables in Word either because it's a little
bit fun, she said sarcastically, editing the cells within the table, even in
Word. I did quite a few of those things before I got my MacBook Pro.

We've had some rather extensive posts before you joined this list on this
subject. You might want to look through previous posts to get more information.
Also, one thing you can do in TextEdit I have done lately is type a column at a
time and paste them into Numbers. The advantage of that is that you can get
them nice and edited first without the restriction of editing in a cell. I have
started doing this when I enter several entries at once into my invoices. It's
a lot faster, and by the way, I had a terrible time pasting anything into a
Word table and having it come out right back in the days when I was using a
Windows computer.

Regards,
Gigi

Yep, i was tempted to let the guy know that he was bang on the buck about
engineers coding the app, but he's missing a huge detail. Like the elephant in

all that swank as a sighted person for an app which solely does stuff for the
blind. Unless he wants to know everything that happens in the world through his

Re: Let's hear each other!

2012-03-06 Thread Emrah
You are absolutely correct!
GSM networks actually use a narrow band 3.1KHZ codec called AMR. The 8KHZ you
are referring to is commonly associated to the sampling rate of the G.711 ULaw
codec.
It would be amazing to have an 8khz audio bandwidth codec on our cellphones…
Some european carriers are almost there with a tentative adoption of the G.722
standard.

All the best,
Emrah

Editing PDF files on the Mac

2012-03-06 Thread Victor Tsaran
Hello all,
Is there a way to edit PDF files on the Mac? For example, many of the tax forms
on the IRS web site are editable electronic forms. Do we have a way of editing
those kinds of documents?

Thanks for any ideas.

Re: Upgrading RAM in a Macbook Pro

2012-03-06 Thread Mr. L. Alexander
the upgrade is very simple in deed. it's a simple case of removing a set of
case screws located under the macbook pro. the lid underneeth simply lifts off
revealing the HD drive, logic board and ram, etc.

the ram is held in place by 2 retention clips per stick, so simply touch the
two retention clips and gently spread them so that the sticks pop up then
remove them.

remove the new memory from the packaging and then install.

re install the lid with the screws and then reboot the laptop.

please note the following...

unplug the laptop from the mains and other conections you may have like
ethernet cables, USB, etc and ensure your laptop is TURNED OFF.
