The workaround for this is to try using VueScan which can interface
between your scanner and Abbey Finereader.
Unfortunately even this solution did not work for me as my scanner was
not even supported on VueScan.

However look at
http://www.hamrick.com/

There is a trial version I think which would definitely tell you whether
VueScan will be able to see your scanner on the Mac.

Should I search for drivers by using my scanner's name and MAC OSX?

How do you fix this issue or, what do you suggest me to try?

Hi,

Kind of a backwards way of doing things, but try this.

• When the message from this person is open.
• Interact with the Message Header area.
• Press cmd-a to select its contents.
• open TextEdit.
• press cmd-shift-t to change the format to Plain text.
• Paste in the results of your copy.

The eMail address will be between the pointies right after their name.

Hi,

You need to empty all of your web cache and data. Go into privacy and details.
Then remove all. Sounds like you have adware on your system. Probably not
from hand break. You can get it just from browsing around the internet with
java script turn on. Seems to be unusually bad lately. Just don’t click any
buttons. Clearing out the browser usually fixes it.

Siri not available problem resolved

2015-04-02 Thread Phil Halton
a few days ago I sent a message about a condition where siri and other apps
like safari would only work on wifi and wouldn’t use cellular data to connect
to the internet. Well, it turned out that I had just replaced the SIM card a
few days earlier and ATT accidentally shut off my data plan on my account. I
had a genus bar appointment today to figure out why no apps would work on
cellular data and Apple wound up giving me a new out-of-box iPhone5 rather than
bother trouble shooting the problem. Then, after setting up the new iPhone5
only to find the problem still persisted, they scratched their heads and sent
me down the hall to ATT for a new SIM card.
ATT put me back on a data plan ($10 cheaper per month than my old plan) and
problem solved.
The Apple tech was great and knew as much about VoiceOver as I do - very
professional and I wound up with a brand new iPhone5 out of the whole snafu.

This is why I love Apple, they always treat me right.

Mike,
When you say you transferred your voice stream files from your old phone to

I certainly don't look forward to the day when I have to replace that iPad and
have to re-download all that stuff. Do I have to sync my iPad via iTunes to get
the back up?

After writing to Voice Dream support, the issue was speedily resolved. This
 may help others:

I had upgraded from an iPhone 4s to an iPhone 6. When transferring all of my
files, apps and settings from the older phone to the newer one, all of the
books in my Voice Dream Reader library safely migrated on to my iPhone 6.
What didn’t make the trip were the dictionaries that I had downloaded. So if
you migrate from one phone to another, and even if all the books appear in
the Voice Dream Reader library, you’ll still need to re-download any
 dictionaries you wish to use.

I have more questions about the iPhone and Voice Dream Reader, but they can
 keep for another posting.

 I hope that this helps.

macbook is to record music using logic Pro X. I do have a couple of
questions that concern me a little though.
First, How do I get voiceover to run automatically at logon? I can’t seem
to get it to work. Second, there seems to be some up and down auto-gain with
the volume using voice-over especially when going to different programs. It
only happens on the internal speakers but it is noticeable. Does that mean
there is a problem with my macbook? Thanks all and I hope you all don’t mind
 me learning from you.

 Ted Phillips

Hello Gabriel,

Most scanners are made to work from a twain driver so check out the twain sane
interface. It’s not as nice as the GUI tools but a little of reading might just
keep familiar hardware going. From memory it involved installing about 5 little
programs within the terminal. But that was some years ago for a different
scanner. Take a look at this:

Re: new macbook user making the trancision from windows

2015-04-02 Thread Phil Halton
Hi Ted,
You should set your function keys to work as software function keys first. The
Mac defaults to hardware function. That way you won’t have to keep pressing the
FN key along with the function keys to invoke the VoiceOver functions. To do
this, go to System Preferences as follows:
1 Press VO M (VO = control and option keys together). that puts you in
the menu bar on the Apple icon. Press VO down arrow until you reach system
preferences and press enter.
2 In system preferences press tab and then type K to get to the keyboard
button and then press VO spacebar to activate the button and enter the keyboard
dialog.
3 Press VO spacebar on the keyboard tab and then VO arrow right until you
reach the checkbox that says “use all F1, F2, F3 keys etc as standard function
keys”. Press VO spacebar to check it.
This is probably one of the most important settings you can make as a new Mac
user in my opinion.

Now, to get VoiceOver to come up talking at logon:
1Go into system prefs again and VO spacebar on “the users and groups” button.
Pressing U will jump to that button.
2 in the “users, Groups, and login options” list, interact with the list
and select login options. Now stop interacting with the list and VO right arrow
all the way over to the “click the lock to make changes” button.
3 VO spacebar on the button . This password dialog doesn’t give any
feedback, so just type your password and press enter.
4 Back in the login options dialog with the lock unlocked, VO arrow to
“use VoiceOver in logon window” and VO spacebar to check it. Now VO arrow back
over to “click the lock to prevent further changes” and press it.
That’s it, Now VoiceOver will come up talking at logon.

Now, as to the Volume gain issue. I think someone referred to it as sound
dock”. That might have been confusing. I think they meant sound ducking, which
is a feature found in the VoiceOver Utility. It causes system sounds including
music etc to “duck” whenever VoiceOver starts talking.
To turn it off, do the following:
1 Press VO F8 to bring up the VoiceOver utility.
Incidently, this is a good example of why you set the function keys to act as
software function keys. If they were left as Hardware function keys, you’d have
to add the FN key to that key combo and all other VO functions that use the
function keys.

2in the categories table, interact and select “sound”. Stop interacting
with the table and VO arrow right to the “enable audio ducking” checkbox and
uncheck it if necessary with VO spacebar. That should take care of the volume
fluctuation problem.

One other thing I would strongly suggest to you as a new Mac user is to study
the “getting started guide” and explore the other options in the VoiceOver
help system. Pressing VO +H brings up the VoiceOver help system. Keyboard help
is especially useful for learning the keyboard and all the VoiceOver command
shortcuts, and the getting started guide is a definitive manual for voiceover
that is well laid out and easy to read. It’ll answer a million questions.
Good Luck with the Mac.

Voice Dream Reader Prob. resolved. This may help others.

2015-04-02 Thread Mike Busboom
Hello everyone,

A few days ago, I posted a note to this list in which I thought I may have
encountered a bug in the latest version of Voice Dream Reader. The problem was
that I was unable to look up words in the dictionary.

What
didn’t make the trip were the dictionaries that I had downloaded. So if you
migrate from one phone to another, and even if all the books appear in the
Voice Dream Reader library, you’ll still need to re-download any dictionaries
you wish to use.

I have more questions about the iPhone and Voice Dream Reader, but they can
keep for another posting.

I hope that this helps.

Mike

Changing Email Account Default Order

2015-04-02 Thread Eileen
Hello List,

A few days ago, I needed to delete my Gmail account and reinstall it. I have 2
accounts on my iPhone6 and my personal email account has become the default
email address when composing an email. My question is: How does one change the
default order of which email account that is used in the from field? Do I
need to delete my personal account and reinstall it, so my Gmail account is in
the first position? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Dlink Modem router

2015-04-02 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Agree with Chris; all this commodity rubbish is no good. If you are using
DSL/DSL2/2+, i.e. the vast majority of DSL providers, then I’d recommend you
consider a Draytek 120. It passes PPP frames directly through to the Ethernet
adaptor, thus allowing any PPPoE client (including AirPort) to work
transparently with your DSL provider, with the AirPort getting the public IP
address and doing NAT. For VDSL, they now have a v130, but I’m not sure if the
bridging function therein is a UK-specific firmware mod, as it looks like it.
It’s what I now use, with a Mac Mini as my router, but it would work just as
well with AirPort.

Interact with text

2015-04-02 Thread Daniel McGee
Hi all, this might sound sort of weird to say but is there any chance of
getting VO to stop saying interact with text. when you jump to and from the
text area of a message using mail?

I was wondering if this could possibly be done through the VO utility, speech
and Pronunciation tab.

The goal of this is to reduce verbosity of speech from Voiceover. If it can't
be done then don't worry that's fine but it would be cool if its possible
because it could mean getting through messages that bit faster.

Re: Interact with text

There is a Custom button in the Verbosity category, but remember that if you
adjust the Interact with Text to remain silent in the mail client the effect
will carry over in to all other apps as well.

  Hi Daniel.
Well, no matter if you set your verbosity to low, medium or high, you're
going to hear at least the subject of the email message when you press enter.
I have never used VO J for reading emails.
I also don't believe there is a way of turning this off in verbosity at all.
Interact with text does not only apply to the mail application.

The goal of this is to reduce verbosity of speech from Voiceover. If it

Re: Interact with text

2015-04-02 Thread Daniel McGee
Hi Matthew, of course that would make sense. Since interact with text is such a
global part of how VO interacts with OS X. So am prepared to accept what you
say.

Thank you though for trying to help. I thought it would be a long shot in
asking but as they say, don't ask, don't get.
