Radium on the Mac

2015-09-19 Thread Mary Otten
It has been a long time since I used radium on the Mac. I use it on my phone
and my iPad quite a bit. I just went to the Mac app, which is up-to-date. I am
not seeing any of the stations which I had previously saved. All I get is a
scroll area that has a bunch of categories presumably for me to browse. But I'm
not seeing any of my safe stations. It seems to me that this problem has been
discussed before, but I don't remember what the solution was if any. I did find
an unlabeled button, which I pressed with no resulting action.

Re: Radium on the Mac

2015-09-19 Thread Phil Halton
Mary, here's the trick, Press that unlabeled button, and then press vo plus
command plus T to move to the table. Interact with the table and you will find
your favorited stations. Pressing the unlabeled button changes the search
categories scroll area into the saved stations table list. You will have to do
this each time you want to get to your table of saved stations. Very strange,
but that's how it works.

I believe my canon scanner came with a CD with a twain driver and some other
code. Perhaps you need to install a driver.

Re: Dropbox on Mac (was: Scanning text on the MAC)

2015-09-19 Thread Alex Hall
No question about learning the Mac is stupid. I did the same thing: fought with
it off an on for a year while using Windows, then finally had to use the Mac
when NVDA completely stopped working thanks to a bad speech driver back when
Nuance voices first came out. Once I got the hang of it in those few weeks, I
stayed with it, and now I dread the days I have to work with Windows for family
or clients. Don't forget that, right on the homepage of AppleVis.com, we have a
link to a bunch of resources for getting started with the Mac--podcasts,
guides, and the like.

Eileen,

Does this mean it will not run on the laptop? It is possible I’m not

to work and now that Understand it it is just fine. I don't do a lot of

VMWare Fusion causes very poor battery life on Retina Macbook Pro

2015-09-19 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi everyone, since migrating from a Macbook Air to a retina Macbook Pro,
battery life when using Fusion has been very disappointing. Obviously I'd
expect to take a bit of a hit, since I'm running two operating systems at once,
but in some cases I am only getting about three hours. It was far better with
the Air.
I'm looking for strategies to do all I can to maximise battery life as I enjoy
having access to both operating systems at once, and would prefer not to
Bootcamp if I can help it. Windows is my primary OS though, so I need to try
and improve the situation.
I've gone into the virtual machine settings and have disabled graphics
acceleration. I've also told it not to use full resolution for retina display.
I'll ask VMWare directly, but right now their support seems to be going through
a system upgrade.
One thing in researching this issue is that it would appear VMWare Fusion Pro
may be better at giving you control over whether the virtual machine uses the
dedicated GPU or not, which I think is probably what's doing a lot of the
draining.
Can anyone confirm that VMWare Fusion Pro might be a better bet in terms of
energy consumption?
Thanks a lot.

So within about 90 minutes, I had all my apps, my settings, Windows and
all the software I use there, JAWS, and everything set up. Now that, is
 very slick.
My question relates to the force touch trackpad in my new Macbook Pro.
It's really remarkable. When the laptop is switched off, you can feel it
for what it really is, a flat surface that doesn't give at all when you
press it. But when the machine is on, the haptic technology really makes
it feel like you're clicking. Makes me look forward to 3D touch on my 6s

Has anyone found a use for the force touch gestures, such as a deep press,
with VO? I take it VO can't yet differentiate between a deep press and a
 standard tap?

event detected

2015-09-19 Thread Michael Babcock
good day;
i just registered for a webinar, and have never tried to do this in the past
(Siri is my friend and normally i ask him/her to set my appointments for me).
My phone isn’t next to me, and i’ll admit i’m being a little lazy tonight.
I heard voiceover in my confirmation email say
“event detected”
when i red the following text in my webinar confirmation message:

Monday, 21 September 2015
02:00 pm Eastern Time (US and Canada), GMT -4

Is there a way to add this information to my calendar quickly? or will i have
to manually copy and paste the title of the webinar and set the date and time?
Just wondering what ‘event detected’ means, and or is it just a placeholder for
a voiceover user to know that a date is being shown?
thanks for any help with interacting with this type of content; and BTW, my
friend SIRI added the event for me; i ended up grabbing my phone before i
finished this message.
Keep being more then wonderful.

Is iPhoto obsolete now?

2015-09-19 Thread Christina C.
Ok, I am behind I guess. I rarely used iPhoto on the Mac since I can’t see the
photos. Anyways, occasionally I do have family photos or videos to organize.
My family members take the pics. Anyways, I opened iPhoto and I got a message
that my photos were migrated to Photos. So, is iPhoto obsolete? Is the photos
app the replacement and is it just as useful. I’m just confused. Is it
basically voiceOver accessible, besides the obvious fact that I cannot see the
photos themselves? :) I mainly use it to store the pictures for my family and
don’t mess with or edit the actual photos.

Thanks,
Christina

Re: Dropbox on Mac (was: Scanning text on the MAC)

2015-09-19 Thread Eileen Scrivani
Hi Phil,

Last year when I first got the Mac, I used the help feature and did go through
some of the tutorials. Some of it made sense and a lot more of it just made me
feel lost. Over the last year, I confess, I reverted back to Windows since I
can do things so much better and faster than on the Mac. My reason for buying
the Mac Book was & still is that I expect this Windows computer to crash within
a year or two. The last 2 to 3
Windows computers I have owned have all had problems that were not repairable.
Out of disgust I decided I wanted to learn how to use the Mac before it becomes
an emergency situation. So, a year later here I am still struggling to try and
make sense of the layout and how things work. I know its ridiculous and I’m
left just feeling really stupid!!

So, sorry for all my very basic questions. I will re-visit the help like you
suggest. Thanks.

Eileen, one of the very best and most up-to-date tutorials on how to use voice

is in the form of an HTML document segmented into chapters. When I first got my
mac I read that tutorial voraciously until I understood most all there was to
know about voiceover. It really is an excellent guide on how to use the Mac and
if you read through it you'll be an expert in no time.
Good luck

Does anybody have any knowledge of how to use this?

Re: who can upgrade to El Capitan

2015-09-19 Thread Jeffrey Shockley
Hi,
Just adding to this, any Mac that can run Yosemite can also run El Capiton.
That’s what I found by looking at various sources by Googling OS X El Capiton
and also, some release notes on the Apple Developer website. It also looks like
El Capiton has the same system requirements pretty much as Yosemite.
Hope this helps,

Re: Radium on the Mac

Thanks, Phil. I did some more experimenting before seeing your message, and I
discovered that there is some kind of fluky thing you can do by interacting
with the search field and typing in a search. Then you get out of the search
field and move around and sometimes magically the button appears to go to your
favorites table. it's very strange. I think the method you described with Vo
plus command plus T will be faster and more reliable.

Re: Anyone know how to play all songs by an artist on an iPod or iPhone?

2015-09-19 Thread Les Kriegler
Donna, try this. You Siri and speak the phrase play followed by the name of the
artist. I am not running iOS 9, but I have run this with iOS 8 .4 and it works
for me.

 Hi Alan,

thanks for responding. I don't have any problems with playlists, the
playlist tab at the bottom is very easy to find. What I would like to do
is be able to pick a specific artist, say Erik Clapton, and play all the
songs that I have by him in my library. You used to be able to do this,
Music would play one album and then just go on to the next one. the weird
thing is, that once, I actually did see the all Song button, and was able
to select it, but I haven't seen that button since that one time.

reading braille until the bard returns

2015-09-19 Thread Devin Prater
Hi all. So I have this new braille display, and would love to read... But BARD
Mobile hasn't been updated in years, and I don't have a bookshare membership or
anymore. So now, have can I read book in braille format? I would read them in
iBooks or something, but iOS does not support style info, like italics, which
is pretty necessary in some newer books. So, any suggestions? Should I just
give up on braille format and just deal with iBooks?

Re: Braille Software for Mac??

2015-09-19 Thread Eileen Scrivani
Hi Again ...

I was able to download the Louis Braille program/installer (it seems to me) to
my Mac Book. It is listed in the downloads folder/area on the computer.
However, when I issue whatever the command is to start the installer the Mac
comes back saying something about the file/installer is from an unknown source
and can’t install or run – something to that extent – I forget the exact
wording.

I have selected the “continue” button, but I don’t think its doing anything.

Does this mean it will not run on the laptop? It is possible I’m not hitting
the correct command to get it to run/install, I’m just not certain.

Thanks.

Louis for mac works for me. It is not as intuitive as DBT but I did get to
work and now that Understand it it is just fine. I don't do a lot of
translation but it is nice for the occasional file. You can get it from the

Re: Dropbox on Mac (was: Scanning text on the MAC)

2015-09-19 Thread Phil Halton
Eileen, one of the very best and most up-to-date tutorials on how to use voice
over resides right there on your Mac in the help system. Press VO plus H to
bring up the voiceover help system and arrow down until you see QuickStart
guide. Press vo enter on that and you will be brought into the tutorial which
is in the form of an HTML document segmented into chapters. When I first got my
mac I read that tutorial voraciously until I understood most all there was to
know about voiceover. It really is an excellent guide on how to use the Mac and
if you read through it you'll be an expert in no time.
Good luck

The two popular ones are Prizmo ($50--don't bother with the $100
version) or Abbyy Fine Reader. Both seem to do well, though I haven't
compared them side by side. If you have an iOS device, I have to say
that I find the KNFB Reader app to be more convenient and just as
accurate, especially now that it has a stand mode.

Yes to all. iPhoto is gone; Photos is the replacement; it is accessible, so far
as I know. It requires a lot of interacting in places, but it's usable. That
said, I use it less often than you do, so I can't give much detail, sorry.

tell application “VoiceOver” to click once with the right button If this is
something you need to do frequently and you can’t get the developer to correct
their system to work with the contextual menu command of VoiceOver,.
You would use the VoiceOver library of applescript to move the mouse to the vo
cursor and then there is a mouse click command that works something like:

Re: Finally figured out how to not have every email in a thread read to me

2015-09-19 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
I've never had this happen to me.

What I do is open a thread by VO space, interact, VO left to the beginning of
a thread and vo left and right and it reads me each individual message from the
person. It does not give me lists and lists of e-mail addresses. Just who the
message was from and the body of the message. If I don't like the thread, I
just do command W and hit the delete key and all the thread has gone.

It's a shame we have to do all this interacting and getting to the field, but

Re: system integrity protection

2015-09-19 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
Well, I have exactly the opposite plans, I will leave it on unless I come to a
situation where I need to turn it off. I am not quite sure how much safer in
practice the new system will be, but it does put an additional layer of
protection between critical files and applications that believe they can place
files wherever they want.

I have seen too many badly written installers that feel they can muck with any
other application/s configurations too allow this as default. If system
integrity works as promised then the need to run fix permissions will
completely go away. In fact, I have heard that it has been removed from disk
utility.

Questions do abound, If I turn off system integrity and then add a file to
/usr/bin (yes, I know /usr/local/bin is the appropriate place) and then turn
system integrity back on, will that file be removed? Presently, the only
reason, I can think of that this will get in my way is if I decide to load a
porting package and it decides to install in /the directories reserved for
vendor supplied files.

Best wishes,

Jonathan

Re: IOS 9 impressions?

2015-09-19 Thread Josh
Hello all following this thred,
I wrote to report this issue to Apple and received feedback
regarding how to work around it. There is apparently two ways and as
one poster points out here possibly a third way. Apple support says go
to "settings>general>accessibility>keyboard" When in keyboard they
suggest to turn off lowercase keys. This will take some time getting
use to as it appears to lock it in uppercase and in order to get it
out of uppercase you have to remember to tap on the shift key. The
alternate method that Apple recommends is to start typing the message
and when you need to lock shift in capslock mode tap the shift key and
get it into uppercase mode then use the roter and once you are on
action flick up or down till you get to capslock. They say they are
looking into it though.

who can upgrade to El Capitan

2015-09-19 Thread Christina C.
Hello all,

Where do I get the info about which Macs can upgrade to El Capitan? Also, how
do I find out what model of computer I have. Will the Mac App store
automatically let me know if I can upgrade or not by prompting me to upgrade or
does the App store automatically prompt me to upgrade my computer even if it’s
too old?

Thanks,
Christina

Thank you, Anne, for your response. I should have mentioned that I have Tim

Re: Migrating iTunes Library from PC to MacBook Air

2015-09-19 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi Craig, if you go into your Mac's system preferences, and choose sharing, the
nice thing is that your Mac clearly displays how to connect to it on your
networks. You should then be able to enter that address into the address bar of
Windows Explorer, prefaced by two backslashes. Once you log in, you should be
able to navigate to where you need to be and copy and paste as you need. You'll
need to make sure that the appropriate services are enabled under sharing as
well.
Alternatively, a good old thumb drive or external hard disk will do the trick
too.

AppleScript to hide the mail preview in Yosemite.

2015-09-19 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
Good day,

I just finished a test version of an AppleScript application that appears to
close the preview pane on Mail message viewers when run in the current version
of Yosemite. This application requires that you permit it to access UI actions
which must be done as an administrator.

There are routines to
• Switch to a specific settings panel.
•Check if Classic View in mail is on.
• Set the status of classic view
• Change the position of the splitter to 100% for the messages view thereby
hiding the preview pane.

I believe you can see the AppleScript if you get the application, if not I am
willing to share.

Please contact me directly if you want to try this out since I can’t always
keep up to date with MacVisionaries.

Best wishes,

Jonathan

Re: Learning Pages for the Mac

2015-09-19 Thread Craig Werner
Hello, Anne.

Right now, I'm doing pretty well wisth Pages. The only problem I'm having
now is not being able to tell where I am in a document. The command I am
searching for would tell me the page, line, and column number the insertion
pointer is on. VO F4 F4 was suggested, but although it supplies information
about position, it does not tell me what I wish it would.

Craig, if you stop interacting, VO will tell you which page you’re on and how
many pages are in the document.

I am about to start learning Pages for the Mac. For now, I seek only a

Re: Scanning text on the MAC

2015-09-19 Thread Eileen Scrivani
Hi Alex,

I do have an IPhone that has the KnFB software on it and I do use it. The
issue that comes to mind is that in processing mail, I keep records of bills &
payments and keep files on my Windows 8 computer.

If I were to scan important mail with the KnFB app on the IPhone then after
saving information to a file/document, I am uncertain about transferring
information to either my Mac Book Pro or Windows 8 computer for the purpose of
record keeping. I have already installed DropBox on my phone, but now need to
figure out how to get it on the Mac Book. It is the one piece to the puzzle I
am still uncertain how/where to find software and download and install on the
Mac Book.

I’ve looked in Itunes & the App Store, but only see items for either Iphones or
Ipads.

Everything I do on the Mac is a major learning curve and by the time I get one
little thing figured out how to accomplish I walk away with a major headache!
I'm half kidding & half serious about that last statement.

Thanks for any ideas on a workable solution to what I am trying to accomplish.

The two popular ones are Prizmo ($50--don't bother with the $100 version) or
Abbyy Fine Reader. Both seem to do well, though I haven't compared them side by
side. If you have an iOS device, I have to say that I find the KNFB Reader app
to be more convenient and just as accurate, especially now that it has a stand
mode.

Re: Migrating iTunes Library from PC to MacBook Air

2015-09-19 Thread Grant
Hi Craig,

As you may know, on a PC the iTunes library is typically stored in
c:\users\username\music\iTunes. You can force your library folder to be
somewhere else if you want, but that’s where it typically is. Inside that
folder, there’s a sub-folder called iTunes Media, which has subfolders like
audiobooks, music, and podcasts where your media is organized. On a Mac, iTunes
uses an identical structure; you can force the library folder to be somewhere
else if desired, but typically it’s under the music folder in your home
directory. So, copying the folder from the music folder on your PC to the music
folder on your Mac, then opening up iTunes on the Mac, should do the trick.
You’ll be presented with the same library you were using on your PC.

There are two exceptions, however. One is if you have changed the location of
the iTunes Media folder, though this is unlikely unless you specifically
remember doing so. You can check this in iTunes on your PC by opening the edit
menu, choosing preferences, then looking under the advanced tab. If you’ve
moved your iTunes Media folder, you can move it back to its usual location
before doing the copy. The other exception is if you’ve stored some media
outside of your iTunes Media folder. That media won’t be copied. To make sure
this isn’t a problem, before you copy the folder, open iTunes on your PC, open
the file menu, choose the library submenu, then choose “organize library”. If
necessary, you’ll be given the option to organize your library so that
everything’s contained within the iTunes Media folder.

With all that out of the way, you can copy the folder normally, such as using
the method Jonathan described.

Keep us posted if you have further questions. That’s what the list is for!

Cheers,

Grant

Re: Learning Pages for the Mac

2015-09-19 Thread Craig Werner
Very true, Anne, but I'm afraid I want something more specific. If I could
make Pages announce line, page, and column number, I would have a very good
idea of where I am in a document. This would come in handy, for instance,
if I were writing a short document, and I wanted to to space it out
prettily so that it took up most of the page.

We are having similar problems with VoiceOver and speech rates. Using the

Who is tweeking these accessibility settings, anyway? This looks a lot like he
way Windows stuff operates. This shouldn't be arbitrarioy swiched with Apple
without elease notes to explain changes.

If I'm not mistaken you have to open the app with the "open with" command.

Re: Anyone know how to play all songs by an artist on an iPod or iPhone?

George,

I think this may have changed with IOS9. Tonight I tried following your
suggestions, an wen I tapped Play, all that was played was the selected album.

I sync my desired playlists to my iPhone 6 so that my iPhone actually

shuffled or not shuffled." I'm not sure of the actual words to request the
playing not to be shuffled but give Siri a try and see if she meets your
 needs.

 Hi all,

so if you have multiple albums by a given artist, how do you get your
i-device to play all songs from all albums? I've looked in the Apple
Support forums, and saw something that said you did it by tapping on the
artist photo. I've tried tapping the artist's name, but that did not do
 it.
Does anyone know how to do this?
 Thanks,

Dropbox on Mac (was: Scanning text on the MAC)

2015-09-19 Thread Alex Hall
That link will download the software. Once it downloads, go to Finder, press
cmd-option-l, and arrow down to the just-download file. Press cmd-o, and follow
the prompts. Eventually, you'll sign into Dropbox, and that's it. Thereafter,
Dropbox will be just a folder in Finder like any other, and you can use it like
any other folder. You'll almost never need to change anything or adjust any
settings. I'm hoping KNFB Reader eventually adds support for iCloud Drive, but
Dropbox will work for now. Let me know if you run into problems with this, and
remember that you can install Dropbox on Windows until you get more comfortable
on the Mac.

Re: Dropbox on Mac (was: Scanning text on the MAC)

2015-09-19 Thread Eileen Scrivani
hi,

Thank you all who responded to my questions. I have DropBox downloading now on
the Mac. I have been using it for a while on Windows to share files with
another group. Its a matter of my learning how to use it on the Mac.

Currently, I am reading through the Tim Sniffen book, but I find he does a lot
for Zoom, and I’d find it easier if there was more of a focus on VO and would
rather learn more keyboard commands. I’ll try to learn as much as I can from
the book … anything that will help.

Thanks again.

Eileen
