Hi Mary,
I am sorry if you feel I am speaking in any way unfavorably to MR. Korn's
dedication. I am not, since how he personally feels about accessibility
is less important than his ability to insure fully that Amazon's website
complies with standards. As for Kindle progress, I will defer to your
experience as I have never examined a kindle and am not likely to any time
soon. still, was not it you that suggested Peter would not be involved
with nuts and bolts progress since he is senior management?

Subject: home kit clarification, was Re: Smart thermostat with Amazon Alexa

So i understand the confusion here.

The"home" app that you see on your IOS 10 beta devices is an application that
allows you to easily interact with all devices that support home kit.
It used to be that you had to access every application for each of your home
kit devices. For example, you would have an application for your door locks,
and another application for your lights, then maybe a third application for
your coffee maker.
The "home" app found in IOS 10 combines all of these services into one
location, kind of like the"health" app, which can obtain data from other
applications and put it into one centralized location.
"Home" will now allow you to quickly turn on your lights, unlock your doors,
and start the coffee pot, all from one location now instead of having to open
each of those applications.

Hopefully that provide some clarification for people who are confused on why
they don't see the "home" app on their earlier devices, however be assured
that home kit has been around for a while, it's just now starting to hit
mainstream though.

Simon,
There is a fine chance that you might. At the very least NZ Ratified the
UN Convention on the rights of people with disabilities a few years
back. In many countries the treaty carries the rule of law.
I have asked for some contacts who may help among the Web Access
initiative people, some of whom are in your area. with the time
difference it may be Thursday northern hemisphere, but I will share off
list.

web access content guidelines, 2.0 developed by the w3c, these rules
govern accessibility and inclusive web design in many countries.
Reflected in say section 508, stateside, and considered by some to be
the web extension of the Americans with disabilities act.

In some places failing to follow WACG 2.0 is a violation of human rights
laws since a person with a disability is equally entitled to access
goods and services.

Re: amazon's accesability contact.

2016-08-17 Thread Karen Lewellen

Hi Mary,
Peter Korn's official title is archetype. In a way that at least suggests
that he deals directly with the development and implementation of access
standards in Amazon products. Far more so than say if he was a VP of
management.
It is not a question of his focus upon what looks good. It is a question
of what insures
access for individuals with various disability experiences.
I know he is talented, i still use outspoken for my pro tools machine.
But how his desires translate into functionality for Amazon remains a
mystery given what I found last night.

One does not find a different Walmart for those arriving in a van then say
those on a skateboard, so one should not have a different amazon for those

Sometimes, as with say paypal, the person listed as being in charge of
accessibility seemingly gets paid to pretend a disability with a demo.
I have an email from an amazon supervisor stating that the company takes
inclusion seriously. given it is far easier for them to be sued in some

they sincere until I learn otherwise.
applying a generalized expectation sometimes leads to poor results or so I

In Pages, Cmd-FN-Return on a laptop, or Cmd-Enter on an extended keyboard,

home kit clarification, was Re: Smart thermostat with Amazon Alexa

2016-08-17 Thread Michael Babcock

Pratik Patil wrote an article called "Apple's homekit explained : All you need
to know ! on Next thinkerz” back in 2015:
http://www.nextthinkerz.com/2015/06/apples-homekit-explained-all-you-need.html

and another article posted on fast Company: "Why Apple HomeKit Seems Boring
Right Now” may be worth your read as well.
http://www.fastcompany.com/3062760/tim-cooks-apple/why-apple-homekit-seems-boring-right-now

Hopefully this is helped with the clarification, make it an amazing Wednesday

Re: I hate mouse keys!!!

2016-08-17 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Donna,

Mouse-keys can be toggled on and off by pressing the Option key five times. If
your keyboard is getting tired, sometimes the Option key sort of presses
multiple times when you have it down which will thus turn your mouse-keys on.
The easiest thing to do to fix this issue is to turn off the five presses of
the Option key feature. To turn this feature off, go to System Preferences,
Accessibility, then select Mouse and racked from the table. Stop interacting
with the table and navigate right to the Options button. In the dialog that
appears, uncheck the item that talks about toggling Mouse-keys on/off with the
Option key. Now, as long as mouse-keys are off, that toggle will not turn them
on. The only way you'll be able to turn Mouse-keys on will be to check the box
in the Accessibility pane.

Later...

Re: Smart thermostat with Amazon Alexa

2016-08-17 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

Just to add to this, we use the Nest thermostats. The computer interface--at
least last time I looked--was awful, but the thermostat is easy to control from
the iPhone. You can do everything, change from heat to cool, turn on and off,
and adjust temperature. However, to my knowledge there's no way to control it
using Voice.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: Smart thermostat with Amazon Alexa

2016-08-17 Thread Chris G

Hi,
I use the Honeywell Smart WIFI thermostat with voice control. You can
use its built in voice control to control it as well as Alexa. Alexa
can only raise and lower the temp.

It works well with its own app as far as being VoiceOver compatible.

I tried the Ecobee 3 as a demo as one of the Ecobee reps let me play
with his account for a couple of hours.
I couldn't independently change the thermostat using the iOS app from
say 78 to 80. You need to drag the temp with your finger and I never
got it to work. I purchased the Ecobee but for me not being able to
change the temp without using Alexa or voice control was a deal braker.
I couldn't even doit on the computer.
The Ecobee app in iOS was very hard and clumsy to use. In Android I
never got it to work.

The above are just my thoughts and why I returned the unopened package I
purchased and ended up keeping the Honeywell.

director says well we're not bothering to do anything about it as it's only an
issue for 1 person.

Other systems that are still being implemented are flash based and proving to
be issues and again I get well we're not changing things and the best one,
we'll find something else for you to do...

Just a couple of vews to think of.

Not everyone is willing to pull their head out of their A hole.

No offense on the "excess ability wording so to play on it a bit...
If this upper management is supposed to deal with accessibility, then is it not
obvious they do not know the nuts and bolts thus they need to hear from those

Hello all,

My family recently got an Ecobee Smart thermostat. It turns out that we did not
get the correct version to work with Apple HomeKit. However, I fear that it
works with Amazon Alexa. Has anybody on here used this or similar smart
thermostat with Alexa for iOS? What is your experience?

RE: I successfully instlal windows on my Mac computer!, but I just hve some questions

2016-08-17 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Folks,

 Just a note here,

I've found with a number of VMS of windows
Mostly with virtual box but have also found with vm fusion as well, that using
the command key doesn't work as the vm system sees that as a windows key.

In virtual box the left hand command key seems to default to a command key and
brings up a menu for VB where as the right hand command key defaults to a
windows key for the vm.

What I've also found is that in system preferences under keyboard I make sure
the keyboard settings are set to use all function keys as function keys.

And what is wrong with using the caps lock key as the jaws key if that is what
you are using?

Hi Helga and Scott,
Well, I'm not sure what to tell you. Maybe Jaws doesn't like the command key as
insert, I would try making the ` or \ keys as insert.
I'm going to install jaws 17 tonight on my mac running windows 10 under
bootcamp, and I'll play around with it.
Best, Jeff
