Mark on HomePod

2018-02-15 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

Well, first let me thank you for your replies. I really do enjoy a good
technology discussion.

Second, today I went to my local Apple Store and purchased the space gray
HomePod.

What I found interesting is that, at this location, anyway, they were really
pushing the device. In fact, the sale rep stated several times, "Well, buy
it and if you don't like it, just bring it back." I was a bit surprised at
this.

It wasn't just him for as I browsed through the store, many of the sales
reps were talking to people and expressing the same sentiment. In fact,
their somewhat pushy demeanor almost turned me off my purchase but, as I did
not have a digital assistant, I decided to add HomePod to my Apple family of
products.

As for the ring residue problem? I purchased a 3-dollar mouse pad to place
under the unit.

I'm looking forward to unboxing HomePod and taking it for a spin, this
weekend.

Mark

Re: I Want to Buy a HomePod But, ...

2018-02-15 Thread Alex Hall
Thanks for the response. Just to clarify, I meant I want to be able to add
calendar events, or move them around. As to timers, I'd want named timers, and
to have multiple ones. For instance, I'd want HomePod to tell me the cookies
are done after 12 minutes, and that the laundry is done after 25.

Still, multiple accounts is the big one. I want HomePod to know who's speaking,
just as Siri already does on phones and iPads. It should then use that person's
account to respond to the request. Better still, use Apple Watch authentication
to make sure the person speaking is nearby, similar to automatic login on
macOS. After all, I could be on the wifi network, but nowhere near the speaker,
and HomePod will consider me present right now. That seems like a poor design
choice if one has roommates, ornery siblings, and so on.

I'm sure HomePod sounds incredible, but as someone who likes music but wants
the smarts and audio books more than tunes, I can't get behind it as it is
right now.

Sonos One feet leaving same white marks on wood furniture that the HomePod can

2018-02-15 Thread Mary Otten

Sonos One feet leaving same white marks on wood furniture that the HomePod can
AppleInsider

A day after a debacle began about the HomePod silicone ring on the base of the
unit was causing a stain to appear on some wood surfaces, it looks that the
Sonos One has a similar issue with its own vibration-insulating feet.

A reviewer at Tom's Guide noted the markings that were caused by the feet of
the Sonos One. Instead of a solid ring, Sonos has elected for four raised
"feet" —and contact with those feet is similarly inducing the temporary
markings on furniture.

The HomePod's manifestation of the white markings was first spotted on
Wednesday. it is manifesting from contact with "oiled" wood surfaces and the
silicone ring on the bottom of a HomePod.

It is not appearing on all wood surfaces. AppleInsider's HomePod used for
testing has been in a fixed location on a finished wood surface since Saturday,
and no ring has developed.

"It is not unusual for any speaker with a vibration-dampening silicone base to
leave mild marks when placed on some wooden surfaces," the Apple support
webpage for the HomePod reads. "The marks can be caused by oils diffusing
between the silicone base and the table surface, and will often go away after
several days when the speaker is removed from the wooden surface. If not,
wiping the surface gently with a soft damp or dry cloth may remove the marks.
If marks persist, clean the surface with the furniture manufacturer's
recommended cleaning process. If you're concerned about this, we recommend
placing your HomePod on a different surface."

It appears that glass, granite, MDF plywood, polyurethane-sealed wood, and
laminate furniture such as that found in Ikea are not affected by the problem
—which makes sense if the problem is a reaction between different silicone
mixes.

Re: Location of data on a hard drive

2018-02-15 Thread dan d.

I think it is the oppisite. THe read/wright speed at the rim is fastest. It
has to be faster at the rim to cover for example 90 degrees of
rotation then a point at the center for the same 90 degrees.

My thinking was that if there are some things for which I want fastestt
read/write speeds it would be from the 2nd partition if it is created
closer to the edge of a platter, assuming a single one in a hard drive.

Hmmm, well shut my mouth; I’m not sure why, but I was laboring under the
dilution that “Text Selection” was not available while reading an e-mail
message. I just tried it on one in my InBox and — wahLah - it works just fine.

I wonder what in the Sam Hell made me think “Text Selection” was not available
while reading e-mail messages. Boy, oh boy; do I ever feel stupid!

Oh, and by the way, thank you Scott. Your suggestion (one that I’m sure a
number of you were aware of) is by far the most convenient method to copy that
gift code from the e-mail message to the paste-board.

I'm surprised you haven't yet received an answer from some iphone user.

If it's truly the case that iphone can't do this, get an Android phone.
It works there perfectly.

Maybe this little nudge of mine will help get you an iphone answer. Hope
so!

I've had no problems using Google Calendar.

Note that you can set the time zone of any Google Calendar appointment.
You can even set a different time zone for start and end times, so that
you can correctly add flights to a Google Calendar.

Re: I Want to Buy a HomePod But, ...

2018-02-15 Thread Scott Davert
I agree with Tim. My snarky comment aside, I'm afraid this just isn't
going to happen. In the view of many, the headphone jack is a step
backward, not forward. While there are things like Bluetooth
transmitters that you could pair that can be hooked in to something
with a 3.5 MM jack, it requires the purchase of more stuff. Though the
sound quality of the Homepod is great from what I can tell, the
absence of a headphone jack was one of the things that turned me off
to it. Further, as already mentioned, there is no direct support for
other music streaming services which are available through other
devices on the market such as the Echo, Sonos, and Google platforms.
yes, you can certainly Airplay your iPhone using spotify or whatever
other music you have on your iPhone, but you cannot, for example, ask
Siri to play something specific from Spotify and have it be
successful. If you are an Apple Music subscriber and want something
with fantastic sound and do not mind using Airplay, though, the
HomePod certainly seems to fit that bill well. I'm also sure it will
improve when updates are released to include stereo sound and
multi-room support. I also will not be getting one, as it doesn't fit
my use case.

Just my thoughts,
Scott

Hi,

As mentioned by others, there's no need to have Apple Music. You should be
able to play music from your iPod via AirPlay to the HomePod wirelessly, thus,
playing your music from the exact playlists and such that reside on the iPod
itself. Regarding the inclusion of a 3.5 mm jack, I would bet big money that
you'll never see such an animal on the HomePod, it just doesn't fit the use

the HomePod would have a 3.5mm jack so that I could use it with non-apple
and/or legacy hardware devices such as my iPod Nanno. What a bummer that it
does not have such a port.

Perhaps I'll wait until the next generation model in hopes that they will
permit legacy-device attachments.

Thoughts?

Re: Location of data on a hard drive

2018-02-15 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I don't have specs to confirm, but my understanding is that the OS is stored
the inner most and data beyond that. This is to give the drive the quickest
access to the system files when needed. Since the first partition contains
your MacOS, then this behaviour should be maintained.

Later...

Hello listers,

I have a 1t mac hardrive which I split into two partitions.

With the first partition containing the os and other data is the data stored
nearer the center or the edge of a platter?.

How is this os location affected if there are multiple platters?

Thanks.

The other option is to use the text selection rotor options and then
go to edit and select copy. Then do the same with paste. Either way
you slice it, this will be a multistep process.

The reasonable solution from Apple would be a verbosity setting that doesn’t
read element labels. There are times that I would turn the reading of them off.
Like reading lots of emails that I just want to read from start to finish and
they have so many tables just to place their graphics in. I would love to just
read through without all that information but then be able to turn it back on
easily when I need it.
