it's kind of hard to explain. when I want to cycle through windows I use
command-tilde. when I want to open folders as I'm navigating to my desired
destination, that's when I use command-option-down arrow for open and
command-option-uparrow for close. I'm in list mode. I'll have one window

The problem is fixed I had vo set to play a tone when vo comes across format
changes in text. I set this to do nothing and now it is fine. Thanks. This
tone is ahigh pitch sound. HTH.

this sounds more like a incorrect mode of viewing folders than anything else.
Olny other thing I would look at is cursor tracking. Are you in column mode?
