Hi for some reason the language combo boxes on the www.translate.google.com website are not showing up as pop up buttons so I cannot change their values. I am running the latest mac OS10.6 and latest updates. Is this something I just need windows for? Hi guys I personally am a big fan of the mac. I also really like vinux3.0 based on Ubuntu. Orca is coming along nicely and its nice to use ubuntu to legally and freely turn my pc into a mac which talks out of the box and for $5 I get voxin to use with it. I am disappointed that gwmicro did not even mention the fact linux distributions such as vinux and knoppix-adriane and grml exist. One of the reasons I like vinux is because it pretty much turns any pc into a macLike computer with the same or better security and stability just as the mac has on it. With vinux I just plug in my braille display and it works, usb and passport drives show up as icons on the desktop. There's no safely remove hardware. it has a calculator, dictionary, web browser, at least two email programs, a ful office suite including powerpoint, and that's just scratching the surface. If you install emacs you get the gnome desktop plus the emacs audio desktop with voxin. You can use both console and graphical modes. Don't want to remember tons of commands? then don't worry about it, you can just copy and paste commands into the terminal. Vinux only needs 384 mb to 512mb of ram to run. if you plan on using vmware player and windows7 then get at least 3gb of ram. win-xp and win98 need much much less ram. I love my mac and I love vinux3.0 equally! GwMicro doesn't seem to want to really acknowledge apple, or NVDA, or serotek, or vinux or grml or knoppix-adriane at all. Hi Mac seems a lot like vinux in some ways. With vinux you also not only have the screen reader, but you have a fully accessible operating system. Are there bugs, sure but if you're willing to take the time to learn mac and vinux it is well worth it in my opinion. I think getting a mac, or a pc running vinux just blows windows out of the water in terms of security and stability and stuff. Hi Is ubuntu/vinux trying to copy mac I wonder? Most programs for vinux except for qt4 and some webkit programs are currently inaccessible with vinux 3.0 but other than that most things just work. Does mac use something similar to At-Spy atspi to make its OS accessible I wonder? Reason I'm asking is because when both mac and vinux3.0 load websites they both say html content. They also say some other things that makes me think vinux has incorporated at least some form of apple's universal accessibility into vinux 3.0 itself. Hi Ubuntu is just that, Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop. to turn it into vinux they run a whole bunch of automated scripts and do a little tweeking then use remastersys to make an iso file. Orca is the main screen reader for both ubuntu and vinux3.0. and orca, like the apple voiceover, is getting better all the time. the unix shell and mac terminal
Hi Over the past few weeks I have been running vinux 3.0 lucid in a virtual machine and have been playing with it. And then recently I went into the terminal on my mac in snow leopard and typed some commands and surprisingly I find that most of the commands I can perform in vinux I can also do with the terminal or the mac's unix shell. It's really cool. The only difference I can see in the mac is that it uses the darwin kernel while vinux uses the linux kernel. Oh and guys if you go into a terminal in your mac and type: man ls you can even read the unix man pages there. The only thing that doesn't work is apt-get command. I'm not sure if dpkg works or not, I haven't tried it. I'll try right now. Well guys dpkg also does not work. The mac's shell reminds me very much of vinux 3.0 lucid though. If you type uname -a it will tell you the kernel version among other things. If you type: man ls it will bring up the man page for the ls list directory command. to quit the man pages just press the letter q,. To close terminal hit command q. You can even hit tab and it will autocomplete commands for you. I imagine the unix shell is very powerful, even on the mac. And I'm glad mac uses the bash shell. Vinux uses it too. I doubt voxin would work on the mac since voxin I think is compiled for the linux kernel and not the darwin version10 kernel. download linked file in mail
Hi Someone sent me a file through dropbox. I hit control option shift m and hit enter on download linked file. I can see in my downloads folder that its downloading but is there a way I can get to a download progress window in mail? or does it just download linked files in the background? I'll go into my downloads folder and check the table to see if the file size is increasing but I wish I could sit the vo cursor on a progress bar of some kind to watch the download progress like I do in safari. macbook pro with bellkin router
Hi I am at a friend's house and he has a bellkin router. My macbook pro refuses to connect to the bellkin router. It is connected to someone else's linksys router which is an open network. openoffice is now a braille translator
Hi Did you guys know that there is a free extension for openoffice that will translate documents into grade2 braille and back? it will also emboss documents in openoffice so far it supports 8 embossers, more coming soon. It also lets you type grade2 braille into openoffice using the sdf jkl keys pressed together to act as the braille dots. It also adds a braille menu to the menu ar of open office. status menus messed up
Hi Somehow I messed up voiceover. when I'm in mail and press arrow keys to edit my message up and down arrow move me by character and left and right move me up and down lines. Also in the status menu control f8 menus I cannot hit left arrow over to clock. it just beeps at me. I wonder what I did to cause this? working with text question
Hi also in text edit I interact with the edit area type some text and left and right arrow are no longer moving me by character. also the control f8 status menu if I hit control f8 then left arrow it should go to the clock, but instead it just beeps and I have to right arrow a bunch of times to get to the clock. pc gaming on the mac
Hi Ok with running windows7 in bootcamp I have been trying all day long and windows7 professional 64bit in bootcamp refuses to run jim kitchen's games. I wonder if I should download that windows xp mode from microsoft and try that? I even tried compatibility mode still, isn't working. System access and screen readers are working fine it seems its just certain applications are refusing to run and giving me trouble. For example revo uninstaller is another program that's not running at all. I'm gunna ask voc rehab to buy me vmware fusion I think. if they don't I'll just go ahead and buy it at the end of the month. modifying the bootcamp partition?
Hi I'm having a problem with my windows bootcamp partition and would like to delete a folder on that partition from the mac side. But it opens in the image browser and I cannot delete the folder I want to delete with command shift backspace or command shift delete. How can I modify files on the bootcamp partition and delete them? A windows screen reader, system access is freezing up for some reason just after I log into windows so I want to delete and reinstall it. Hi Goldwave will still convert them if you first deactivate your audible manager then uninstall it, then install windows media player filter and k-lite mega codec pack. open audible book in gold wave, enter audible user name , password, goldwave opens book, then save as mp3. will not convert .aax new audible extreme format books. to do that you'll have to burn to physical cd or iso file then either rip cd to mp3 or mount iso file as another drive and rip to mp3, then unmount and delete iso or isos. converting audible books .aa files
Hi Is there a way to convert audible books .aa and audible extreme format books .aax files into regular mp3s on the mac? I want to convert them to mp3s so I can play them on my national library service digital book player. Also is there an audible download manager for the mac? Or would I have to go through itunes? Hi I got sound working. here's how I did it. I went into the start menu in windows, went into all programs and went to the apple updater and updated bootcamp to 3.1 or the latest version of bootcamp for windows. Hi the nls player will not play audible books. it only will play: mp3 daisy rfbd .wav .3gp that is all. so to play audible books I have to convert them to standard mp3 first. on windows I use goldwave and audible media player filter. but if there's an easier way to do it with the mac side of my macbook pro I'd love to learn about it. burning audible books to cd
Hi ok, so I don't have to waste cds, I got a question. is there a way on the mac to instead of burning a physical cd. use a program that emulates a cd drive and when you burn with itunes, it burns to a .iso file? then you munt the .iso file and rip it thus you do not have to burn a physical disk? macbook randomly freezes windows7 64bit bootcamp
Hi my macbook pro randomly freezes with windows7 64bit installed with bootcamp all updated drivers. I read its an nvidia driver issue. Can someone please help. I was told the random freezing of windows7 64bit pro on the new 2010 macbook pros is due to an nvidia driver issue and that the file I should be able to get from this site includes a modified .inf file that will fix the issue for me once installed. please help if you can. Hi well I went and rolled back the nvdidia drivers with no effect. windows7 in bootcamp still freezes. it freezes randomly. If this keeps up I may just delete the whole darn partition, buy fusion and put windows7 into fusion. maybe it'll work good then. transferring stuff from pc to mac?
Hi I got some stuff on my netbook that I want to transfer over to my mac. The problem is compounded by the fact that if the netbook were working correctly I could just plug in my new passport drive and windows xp would see it but its not working out like that. So my question is this, is there a way I could plug the old passport drive into the netbook, tell the netbook to act as a kind of server, sharing all of the files on the old passport drive. Then go to the mac plug in the new passport drive into the mac which the mac does see the new passport drive but it does not see the old one because the old drive is a blackarmor drive that only works on windows machines so anyway I would use the network netbook as a kind of server to transfer all 100gigs of stuff from one passport drive onto the other drive, not cuttig it, but copying it over. Is this possible? or am I making this too complicated and there's a better way for me to do it? I want to copy the old passport drive onto the new one and the new one has tons more space than the old one does. help with mac windows7 and bootcamp
Hi I am using the latest nvda snapshot with windows7 64bit. it is running on a macbook pro installed using bootcamp. First question is, for some reason to get standard use of the function keys I gotta hold down the fn key while pressing the f keys. Second, I boot up into windows, hit caps lock n, it says nvda menu, but when I arrow down to go into the menus the menus disappear and I'm put back on the desktop. Do I have to wait awhile before I can use nvda? also why isn't nvda showing up in the system tray? This is my first time with windows7. Oh and also for some reason we did install bootcamp on the windows side because I needed or it has drivers windows needs, but the only way I can get full use of my sound is by using USB headphones. When I use the built in laptop speakers I can barely hear nvda and other sounds. playing a radio station with the mac
Hi If you guys go to www.wvly.com and if you go to the valley front button link, then go to the first table, interact with it, go to column two I think it is, interact with it, hit enter on the unlabeled button or some weird button link, then on the following page there's another table you go there and hit the launch link to listen, why is it that my web browser, webkit is only playing the comercial and it is not streaming the radio station? multilingual braille tables for mac
Hi I installed the multilingual braille tables for mac and then tested it with some greek text on the web that I made google translate produce. My question is why does all the greek text use eight dot braille? same for hebrew, arabic and other languages? I wish there were a way to tell voiceover not to use eight dot braille at all sometimes like a checkbox or something. Hi I downloaded the say it save it program, installed it, and when I typed text into the edit box and pressed the say it button, nothing happened, it did not speak. scrolling through big digest messages
Hi When I'm reading mail on the mac, I read big email digests with multiple subjects. sometimes these are seperated by dashes or the word topic colon, or the word message colon. It seems like if the message is really big, I mean the message as a whole, when I use vo f and vo g to find the next instance of the word or words, vo beeps and can't find it. but if I scroll down using the arrow keys then I find it but it takes a very long time to move from topic to topic this way in an email digest. formatting a passport drive
Hi I got a western digital passport drive from voc rehab also. How do I reformat it with the mac so it can be read by both mac and windows OS? Also how do I get rid of the wd smartware option that also comes up on the desktop when I plug in the drive? I have to use the mac now because ever since that spyware got on my netbook it just totally screwed it up so I'm gunna have to reformat it. Not sure if I'll put xp back onto it or vinux, but that's another matter entirely. I also have a stupid black-armor drive that is not seen by the mac at all. so I gotta wait for someone from voc rehab to reinstall windows7 insto into bootcamp. reading big email digests
Hi When reading big email digests, I usually search for the word topic or a caret or something to go from topic to topic within the digest, but I get so far, go to search for the word again and the mac beeps indicating it cannot be found. but when I scroll down with the arrow keys I find that indeed there are more messages and more topics. So why is the mac searching so far, then kind of lying and saying there is no more carets, or no more occurrences of the caret, or the word topic with a colon after it? I even tried just command f, and command g, with the same results. networking and voiceover and the mac?
Hi How do I use the mac to get my default gateway, IP address of my wifi router and other advanced information like that? Also if I gotta take my macbook over to the router, plug it in via ethernet to fix it, is it easy to tell the mac that I'm connecting through ethernet rather than wifi? and then I'll have to find out the or retrieve the IP address of my modem or my router. Any help on this would be appreciated. in windows I'd go to the command prompt, type ipconfig and hit enter to get such information. Hi I went into network utility and maybe I missed it, but if I remember correctly the ip address of my router is 192.168..1 or .2.1 or something like that. In windows this address was listed under the default gateway. Where do I go in the utility to get the mac to give me that information? selecting text with vo-return?
Hi I tried selecting text inside an email message while interacting with the text using control option return at the start of where I wanted to select, and then again, control option return at the end of where I wanted to select text. Then I hit command c to copy but it didn't work. turns out to select the text while reading the email, I had to hit shift down arrow to select line by line, and that worked. Anyone know why control option return at the beginning and end did not work? All my cursor tracking stuff is turned on inside voiceover utility preferences so all the cursors are tracking each other. questions about skype
hey I just downloaded and installed skype. my first question, why does it seem like mac software takes up more megabytes than pc software? My second more important question, I had to use tab and shift tab to sign into skype, for some reason the vo cursor isn't seeing those combo boxes and buttons. but I managed it. Third, How can I tell if a contact is online offline or away? Fourth, there are some unlabeled buttons, what do they do? I got the latest skype, if someone has labeled those unlabeled buttons already I wonder if you could send your voiceover button labels to me? and if you can how do I install them? Hi, When I went into the keychain utility and deleted the log on keychain it said it renamed the old keychain and stored it somewhere. Is there any way I could find that renamed file and delete it? Hi I see in system preferences of snow leopard that there is a dictation option where if you I guess if you got a microphone you can dictate text and the computer will type for you? Hi I tried downloading webkit to install it but for some reason in the download window I did not see a progress bar so I went in and deleted it. I wonder why the download did not start? Hi, I went into preferences and made a signature for my email but when I go to write a new email apple mail is not letting me insert my signature. there's a pop-up button that says : none. and that's it, the signature I made is not showing up. Hopefully you guys don't mind answering my questions, I only had the apple for a few days and before I write to this email list I try to do my best to figure out how to make something work before I go asking. Hi I tried going to www.foxnews.com. My internet connection gives me between 90 and 100kbps. or 100kb per second. It seems to be taking forever for that website to load in the newest webkit. Also blindcooltech.com takes forever to load also. in fact I got a little impatient and just tried another site. does it take long because my connection is a bit slow? speech recognition
Hi when using speech recognition I plan on using a USB headset with microphone. My macbook pro has 4gigs of ram, 91gigs devoted to mac, a dual core pentium processor, and so anyway its pretty powerful. It should be able to handle speech recognition that is built into snow leopard, assuming the built in recognizer is accessible with voice over. customizing apple mail help
Hello, I managed to set up my email account in apple mail today. However, can someone please tell me how to make all new messages go to my google mail inbox? I changed the incoming server to pop.gmail.com and changed the ports and stuff but for some reason in my mailboxes folder I got this gmail expandable item and when I hit vo backslash and go into all mail it says i got thousands and thousands of messages. when I hit command a, followed by command delete the messages go away, but next time I open apple mail they all come back!
