Have you considered possibly using the search feature within mail being
that first letter navigation doesn't work?
WinMail is open, press command option F, as in find. would this be a
viable option for you?

I can confirm that in both Yosemite, and in El Capitan both, the find command,
VO+F works flawlessly. I’m totally unsure why it wouldn’t be.

First off, option+T shouldn’t open Text Edit, unless you’ve gone in and changed
that shortcut. Normally by default, option+T, provided, obviously, that
keyboard commander is enabled, should announce the time of day.

I think it really just depends on how much data you are actually backing up. I
have a friend who backed up about 300GB of data to Time Machine, and from what
I vaguely remember her saying, it took somewhere around 5 hours.
