Re: [MCN-L] Website image cropping
Thank you to everyone that has replied so far to my inquiry. It’s really nice to have a list like this I can turn to, with thoughtful and informative answers by professionals in the field. To me, it seems pretty straight-forward - try to avoid image cropping because it seems difficult to always get the rights to do this. We want the site to look as good as possible and having to jerry-rig an image to make it fit might work against this goal. Hopefully this is discussion is helpful to others. [MCN-L] Website image cropping
Hello all We're currently redesigning our website and a question came up. I'm hoping to cull some information from the museum community about how other museums handle the same situation. On our exhibition page the redesign relies heavily on landscape image similar to this - where text floats to the left of a landscape image then switches on the next exhibit listing. ••• text • Image • ••• ••• • Image • text ••• ••• text • Image • ••• The design requires the images to all be the same size for it to look it's best, meaning they would be cropped in a lot of cases. We came across a lot of museum sites with similar requirements during our discovery phase. My question is - how are museums handling this? Do you secure rights for cropping artwork? How difficult has it been if so? Are museums offering a full image view on click of the cropped image? Are there museums throwing caution to the wind? Very interested in hearing from you all! [MCN-L] Estimating Website Redesign Costs
Hello all, Apologies for cross postings between MCN (LinkedIn Group), MW (LinkedIn) and the MCN - Listserv. I've recently started a new position at the Cantor Art Center at Stanford University and my first big task is managing a redesign of the website. I've already done some online research and talked to some incredibly knowledgable people, but I'm still curious about how museums approach the cost estimation for a website redesign? The new site will: - Be responsive for desktop and mobile devices - Be Drupal based - Probably need about 5-8 templates designed - Better integrate Gallery Systems Web Kiosk - Integrate with Stanford's gift/donation system - Integrate an events management system such as EventBrite or 25 Live Any real world figures would be very helpful if you are at liberty to share privately. Also, how long the redesign process took from start to finish. I'd love to hear your stories. Thanks in advance! [MCN-L] Production value of online content
Hanan, I can tell you from experience - your next one will be better. After that one, the following one will be better than you second. Your fourth will be better than your third, and so on...and so on. Here at my museum we have been producing our own videos for educational and marketing objectives for the last year and a half. I think they have definitely gotten better and better with each one. We have done interviews, as well as, scripted and storyboarded material. I think with the emergence of YouTube and podcasting that it is the content itself that speaks and not the shell that holds it. However, that's not to say, you shouldn't try to make the best looking content that you possibly can. :0) Best regards, Chris Alexander | Manager of Interactive Technology San Jose Museum of Art 110 South Market Street San Jose, CA 95113 408-271-6875 ph. 408-294-2977 fx. calexander at sjmusart.org __ Go to www.sjmusart.org/podcast to listen to our MUSE Award winning podcast or search for SJMA on iTunes. I shot it once, in sub-optimal lighting conditions, added some simple video effects, slapped opening and closing titles and added a soundtrack I have downloaded from http://ccmixter.org/ http://ccmixter.org/ This is one way of doing it. (The curator of the exhibition was very pleased with it.) Another way would have been to hire a video production company, write a script, have multiple back-and-forth discussions with them and then show it with fanfare. What I wonder is if online content, that just does the job but has low production value, is the right path to take. Does it undermine the public image of the museum? Is accessible, fast and cheap, social media presence good for our outreach efforts? I am not sure where we should draw the line and invest in production of online content. [MCN-L] Handheld tour question
Hello trusty MCN Listserv, I have a question for you concerning handheld tour devices that might sound a little radical in its thinking. Don't think it's my crazy idea; I'm just the tech guy doing a background check on this listserv! We currently offer a museum tour via iPod Touch which we checkout to visitors if they are interested. There are concerns that the checkout process might be a deterrent for people taking the tour. The new thought is to let the visitors pick them up and use them on their own. My concern of course is that they are going to walk right out the door. Have any other museums, libraries, etc. offered anything similar? What were the results? Are there any other options to breaking down this barrier? All thoughts and comments are welcome - even ones telling us we are crazy! Too, the museum's caf?.) 1:00pm - 2:00 pm Melissa Johnson, Curator of Interactive Media, history | san jos? Sarah Puckett, Curator of Art and Photography, history | san jos? In 2001 History San Jos?, a regional history museum with a collection of over 75,000 photographs, 500,000 objects, and 5,000 linear feet of archival materials, ventured in to the digital imaging world. After attending workshops, conferences, visiting larger institutions, and researching requirements and equipment, the five person Collections Exhibitions department felt capable of digitally documenting the collection. Since 2005, HSJ has launched five online exhibits sharing the history of the area and making a small percentage of the collection available to the public. Problem: Currently, the small staff is struggling to keep up with the demand for digital images from the public, researchers, and co-workers. The recent requirement for digital plans to apply for most state and federal digitization grants has HSJ at a stand-still. Will small to mid size museums and libraries be left behind when it comes to digitizing their collections? How have others dealt with similar issues? Brainstorm with HSJ Staff, all feedback and ideas are welcome! 2:00pm - 3:00pm Perian Sully, Collection Information and New Media Coordinator, Judah L. Magnes Museum Dr. Francesco Spagnolo, Head of Research, Judah L. Magnes Museum The Judah L. Magnes Museum is in the midst of a huge digital initiative, and we'll hear about one of the centerpieces of this initiative, a new collection management system, IDEA at ALM, which allows the museum to completely integrate archive, library, and museum materials. Perian and Francesco will talk about how the Magnes Museum is using the IDEA at ALM collection management system to reorganize its collections into discrete intellectual sets, while defining how certain fields can be shared across these three collection types. Additionally they will discuss the benefits of cataloging in such a system and explain the greater philosophical reasoning behind this methodology. They will also highlight how shared cataloging enhances research, protects collections, increases access and interpretation, and protects professional standards. 3:00pm - 3:15pm Short break 3:15pm - 4:00pm Susan Grinols, Director Photo Services and Imaging, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco Susan has worked for the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco in various capacities since 1991. She currently heads the Photo Services and Imaging Department and will be discussing FAMSF's approach to archiving--solutions they've found and the challenges of using a homegrown 4D database system as their CMS/DAMS. [MCN-L] Tamara Georgick's iPod Touch Tour Question
Tamara, Thanks for your interest. Yes we do check out the iPod Touch units to our visitors. We have 30 total units and we have cases in the galleries where they are displayed. Our gallery attendants (Museum Experience Reps) offer them to our visitors and check them out. Previously we were using Video iPods and offered those for checkout and also for visitors to download our content from home and bring it in. We did not see many people using their own device that way, but since moving to the iPod Touch and iPhone tour people are using their own device by logging into our WiFi and then opening their Safari browser. If you are interested I talked at length with podcaster Ken Ray who does an Apple related podcast. The link to it is http://macosken.libsyn.com/index.php?post_id=335949. Also, you can see the tour yourself by going to www.sjma.mobi on the iPod Touch or iPhone Mobile Safari Web Browser (it won't look to good on other web browsers). Let me know if you have any other questions! I recently got one and thought it would be a good vehicle for gallery tours. I've also toyed with the idea of using the Amazon Kindle for some sort of gallery delivery tool. They are larger, have better input screens and would be harder to steal, especially since they are tied to an account. The drawbacks are no color and Amazon isn't quite ready to support 3rd party apps yet. Do you have some available for patrons or are you targeting people who already have the device? I thought it might be a good membership gimmick to offer free ipod touch tours to members and have non-members pay a fee. Of course, anyone who had their own device could download the tour for free. [MCN-L] FW: Creative/Technical advice needed!
You can definitely use Garageband to record using multiple layers. We use it in-house for all of our podcasts. In addition, you can use the Blu SnowBall Microphone which plugs right into the usb port for recording. [MCN-L] Follow up to Honeysett Director, IT Session
Hello, As a first time attendee of the MCN Conference, I have to say that I was very fascinated by the conversation going on about the relationship between IT Professionals and their Directors. I am fortunate because a little over a year ago the director of the San Jose Museum of Art made a decision to embrace technology and created the position which I currently fill. Piggybacking of some of the discussion about communication, I wanted to offer a little info about a situation that arose recently. Around the one year anniversary of my position I was approached by our Marketing Director who mentioned to me that I need to be a little more outspoken about what it is that I do at the Museum. This really caught me off guard. I felt that with every opportunity that presented itself I tried to speak about technology and what it was that I was doing. I went through a lot of denial about this, but finally came to the conclusion that I would draft an email that would recap the previous year's accomplishments; this email would then be sent to certain staff members who I felt were stakeholders. The email took me two days to write and ended up being a four page memo. In it, I tried to put it in layman's terms what was accomplished; this many people downloaded our podcast, this many people watched our YouTube Videos, this many people listened to our cell phone tours, I went to these conferences, we are mentioned on this blog, etc., etc. I also included links, which most people are pretty comfortable with clicking on. Basically, I became a self promoter. Not something that I expected to have to do, but embraced after I reflected on all the accomplishments. The email, with attached memo, was very well received and became Jerry McGuireish from people saying, Have you read the memo? or Hey, I enjoyed the memo! Didn't realize you did all that stuff! It was even printed out and distributed by the Director of the Museum to all the Board Members at one of their meetings. It was also forwarded to our Development staff for use in grants and corporate funding initiatives. And, it also acts as a personal record that can be referred to on numerous occasions when shameless self promotion opportunities arise. I realize that I might be in a unique situation, but I encourage some of you to take up the reins of self promotion. It might help to clear the air about any staff questions and might give you a better picture of where you stand in your organization. Thanks for a great session Nik! I was the last one who received one of the books you were handing out at the end! Best regards, Chris Alexander Manager of Interactive Technology San Jose Museum of Art
