Hasn't slipped in more than 2 weeks. I've been driving EXTRA hard TRYING
to make it slip. Only once, from a stand still, floored, did it slip for
less than 1/4 of a second, and then it ran like a scared rabbit. Mobil 1
Synthetic ATF is wonderful stuff!! I will change the fluid and filter
Head gasket or head crack, the oil collecting in the tank is diagnostic.
The head isn't known for cracking on that model, it's more likely to be
a head gasket.

125 (130 down a long steep hill) in my '91 300D 2.5Turbo with the stock 2.65
diff and 4600rpm limit. I thought the '87 124s had a 5000 or 5100rpm limit
with the same 2.65 rear end, that should make them good for a true

Alright, I find this a bit hard to swallow, but I'm wondering if I have a
blown head gasket. This is an 83' 300D. It definitely seems to be using
coolant. I'm not positive, but I think I've put in a couple gallons in the
last month. I know I just added almost a gallon this morning. I drive around

If it is bad, what's the risk from continuing to drive it? Or will it start
running much worse before I need to worry about further damage?

The official top speed of the 1987 diesel wagon is 122mph, the sedan
is 129mph. It's horsepower limited, AFAIK, not gearing/RPM limited.
BTW, for the early W126 300SD, 81-84 was 106mph, and 85 was 109mph due
to taller gearing. Those are factory numbers from either the TDM or
sales

My local indy [my nephew] has been straightening out problems with my
300SD since the 3rd engine was put in. Oil pressure and temp gauge were
cross wired, and it is having some hard shift problems. He didn't sound too
certain about the kick-down irregularities, but said it seemed brand new

M1 ATF cured my trans slipping out of gear. I say that with confidence.
What was the problem? Don't know, probably a gummed/crapped up front
pump. But, changing the fluid to M1 ATF fixed the flare.
