I am not as gifted as Poos, but did some passable work on a black w140. If it is really as bad as you say, maybe hitting it with 3000 or 4000 grit wet sand would give you a better base. I went from 2000 to 5000 grit, then hit it with a series of finer compounds until the shine was back.
