Do you have a scanner or STAR? Put it on the car while you go through that routine and watch the transmission commanded and actual gears, shift points, trans temp, RPMs, speed, and whatever other real-time data you can see. You might be able to save a file that you can then go back and study.

In the past I have noticed on the 99 E300 when its cooler outside, when I pull out of the driveway and get to the stop sign a mile down the road, sometimes it will not start off in 1st, it starts in 2nd then kicks down to first after you start moving, then shifts normal.  Will seem to do this

First gen (1991-1995) W140s suffered from the wiring harness issues and evaporator failures. 1996 and later were unaffected and have far better systems, such as the better transmission that Jaime mentioned, the later ACC system similar to what’s in the W210, and COPS, or coil on plug ignition
