[MBZ] bad rattle in shift lever

I was driving home last night and a rattle started in the shift lever (it feels a bit like it is jumping around a bit). It is more pronounced when going around corners or braking (I know, that's weird). The shifts themselves feel fine, no flaring, etc... Just wondering if that has ever happened

I am in the middle of replacing the alternator on my 85 300D. There does not appear to be sufficient clearance between the pivot bolt and the oil drain tube for the turbo to get the pivot bolt out far enough to remove the alternator. Is it really necessary to remove the drain tube? If so... the
