The battery meter I used does a load test - that is what indicated to charge the battery. Dave Wakin left. (It declines with age.) A real battery tester puts a several-hundred amp load on it and looks at the voltage then.

Any ideas where to begin? I seem to recall that the car has about 160k miles on the clock. I had a 190e that wouldn't idle - ended up being a vacuum line on the throttle body that had come loose. I know it's not the same problem or even engine, but maybe worth a look. Dave W

How about CLR - Calcium, Lime, and Rust remover. If I recall my chemistry correctly, you want some liquid which is acidic in nature a Ph of 7 or much less is better. This will dissolve the metal/rust etc.. Hopefully, the rings causing the problem will dissolve before the other metals

Had a tire like that on my 82 300SD. I was about 100 miles from home when I noticed it, so I put the spare on and put the bubbled tire in the trunk. Sometime between when I changed it and going to get a new one, it had exploded while sitting in the trunk. Blew the steel belts out quite nicely.
