Looks like my speeds were in KPH, not MPH. Servers me right for listening
to a NASA video about the eclipse.

The sun revolves around the center of our galaxy. We are kinda out in the

The sun probably revolves?
Thanks for (re)introduction to REVOLVE
The moon REVOLVES about the earth (and the earth REVOLVES about the
sun), the moon and earth ROTATE about their axes (and the moon is
rotation-locked to the earth so it always presents the same face to the
earth).
And actually earth rotation speed is about 1000mph (24 hours, 24000mi
The Earth rotates at about 1700 mph at the equator, the moon orbits at
around 3400 mph in the same direction, so slightly faster, so the shadow
passes from west to east.

The sun in this neighborhood rises in the east and sets in the west.
The moon also rises in the east and sets in the west?
Why did the eclipse totality go from west to east?
...yeah... duckduckgo

Really? This was my third significant eclipse that we've viewed with our
eclipse glasses. I don't know how I've been able to lay hands on them as
needed, but I did. The experience is pretty much the same, depending on how
much of the eclipse you get.
It looks like we will get even more than the
I will say the lightning about 5 minute and up to total was very strange, very
different that anything else I have experienced.

Nice view of the partial eclipse from here. I measured the LUX during what
we got:
Normal full sun is 111,000 LUX - which is more than my meter can handle.
1252 CDT 13,000 LUX
1302 CDT 8,000 LUX
1313 CDT 10,080 LUX
1327 CDT 21,550 LUX
1343 CDT 34,500 LUX
1404 CDT - >40,000 LUX (no reading)

I really like the way you spelled attenuate. :)
Even though a geologist, I have no special insights into the odds of
another possible New Madrid quake. If there is one, prepare for a tax hike
to pay for the recovery effort$.

Well, I don't know what gravitational effects the alignment of the sun and moon
have on the Earth's crust, but there will be another total solar eclipse
visible in the US in April of 2024. It just so happens
Worse comes to worst, the eclipse will usher in The End of the World.
If not, then party on, Garth.

I just need to work on my attitude, try to be more positive about this
whole thing. Self-fulling prophecy and all that.
Hey, the sun is out now, skies look pretty clear after a big storm rolled
through earlier this a.m. Maybe we won't be cloud-covered for the big
event.

I considered the sailboat option, but I'm quite sure the local waters will also
be covered with power boaters. We've talked to a few people, and watched our
neighborhood boat storage empty out last night.
It's already a mess, I awoke to emergency vehicle sirens from the major
thoroughfare,

Forget standing elbow to elbow with idiots that you didn't marry or create.
Take the sailboat.
Or, alternately: "You girls have a nice time, I'll keep the dog company in case

We considered riding bikes over to the island, but I'm worried about the heavy
traffic and the risk of getting run over while riding along the side of the
road. It's going to be a zoo. I'd rather camp out at the neighborhood pool,
with a cooler of beer and pizza from a local joint, so we can
Eureka Pizza has a 2-for-1 offer during the eclipse. So I'll go get some
cheap pizza and, if the sun is VERY lucky, I'll shoot a glance in its
general direction.

My abode is just about dead center, we'll get a little over a minute and a half
of totality. SWMBO wants to head to the nearest beach, a barrier island,
normally about a fifteen minute drive, so I think we'll need to leave at about
11 so we can be totally jammed in a huge crowd, sweating for
Heck with that you got a plane, take off and fly up to the path of totality and
watch it from the air.

At home we are at like 90%. We just arrived in Osage Beach Mo which is the
closest hotel room I could book 2 weeks ago to the path. We are going to head
up to Jefferson City in the morning which is about 45 minutes away. Will find
somewhere to park and hope for no clouds.
