Max,
I don’t do VOIP, other than at work. It’s inherently unsecure depending on how
the traffic is being handled. If I can capture your VOIP packets I can listen

Well...
That peaks out interest.
What might we hear? Some things most don't know?
I suggest most of us talk stuff nobody is curious to hear, not even
stuff appropriate for a girlfriend... if that applies... it
Part of the work I do involves looking at traffic to see how secure it is.
There is readily available, open source packet capture software (Wireshark is
the most popular) that can be used to open up pretty much any protocol in a
data stream that isn’t encrypted. VOIP is easy to encrypt, and
I'd like to hear some thoughts about VOIP apps and accounts, tips and

My wife's iPhone 4s is now running on Ting, and while she is at home with
WiFi (or out and about and connects to a WiFi signal) I'd like to set up
her phone with VOIP.
I'd also like to play with something like that on

Yes, I'm quite tempted to ditch the Android OS that came loaded on my phone
and install a CyanogenMod OS, which offers more privacy by default.
Somehow I don't think that Apple devices are offering too much more in the
way of privacy.
Back to the original topic, I've already got a Skype

I'm not saying it won't work but you'd need to have a way to power your
internet service and the VOIP box in case of no power.

Vonage is good. It uses ~ 100k incoming and outgoing when you are on a
call. Standard DSL may only have 128k outgoing, so it's right at the
limit of some connections. If you are saturating your connection with
downloads or uploads, you will notice dropped packets. It uses UDP so

Kids use Vonage and like it ok. We use a cable phone service over our cable
