Subject: [MBZ] Very off topic -- Volvo's
Anybody know anything about the mid 90's Volvo's. I am looking at a 1995
Volvo 850 GLT. Any thoughts
and ask there.

My son bought a 1991 740 with a blown head gasket. I replaced it for $250.00
(free labor from me). This is by far the easiest car I have ever worked on,
and he really enjoys driving it. I don't know about
Did Volvo make the engine? They sold a 240 diesel too, but it was
powered by VW.
Interesting timing belt trivia. I'm replacing the one in my
(gasoline-powered) 240 wagon today.

The 2.0 Mazda used in the Escort Tempo in the 1980s (I think it's
very similar to the engine in the Ranger) had two timing belts.
At the front of the engine,

Steve,

The volvo diesel with two belts was made by Audi/VW - same as the basic
engine used in the '70s-early '80s Rabbit/Jetta with a couple of
cylinders
Decent car. Parts expensive, in some cases 4x older, RWD Volvos. Volvo parts
prices have gone very far, far north since Ford takeover.
If automatic and transmission has not yet been changed, you will have to do
it: $3500+ at dealer. Pre-86 autos are weak. Sticks are fine.
A w124 is a better car
Donald,
Visit www.swedishbricks.net and sign up for the mailing list. There's a
number of 850 owners on the list, and as you can imagine, there's a pretty
good rivalry between the FWD and RWD crowds.
Mention my name, you'll get a good seat. (I'm the listowner grin)

My bias is for the 240s of the late 80s and early 90s. They're good,
solid cars, parts are plentiful and cheap, and they're relatively easy
to work on.

Nice cars, Front wheel drive a bit harder to work on than the RWD 7,9,
200 series cars ( of which I have at least one of each , some gas, some
diesel :-). All of that vintage were built to last, including the 850.
Aside from the usual FWD torque steer, the 850 is a blast to drive.
