If it's possibly to rich, there is an adjustment knob on the side of the control unit. Assuming (yeah, I know, shut up) it's the same as my '73 450 SE, it is located behind the right side kickpanel under the glove box. You can turn the rheostat back and forth and hear the idle quality change.

Rich running is often a failed manifold pressure sensor or (the cheap fix) a leaking hose from the manifold to the sensor. Causes VERY rich running, as in black smoke when you step on the gas, but that will indeed dilute the oil. Milage will only drop from about 12 to about 8 Peter

As I recall, every MB engine already has hard valve seats so there's no issue there. The 450 engine is a wheezy-for-US job that's extra low compression anyway. Europe got the high-compression 280, 350, and 500 engines. Not us. -- Jim ___

Actually, the myth was that the lead oxide produced an ablative coating -- that is, one that wears away but doesn't wear the underlying seat -- and protected the valve seats in cheapo crap Detroit motors with the valve seat (and guide) machined directly into the cast iron of the head.
