Oh I have no doubt about that. Probably nothing really wrong with the
1st one except something got gummed up inside. Only strange thing
though is on the 1st one I even swapped the valve body, so
the little valve in
the center of the governor shaft moving as you push the 'wings' up and
down. It may not help but it's easier then taking the valve body off.

From my research these engines are nowhere near as robust as we MB folk have
come to expect however they are MUCH less expensive to rebuild. The head is
less than $1000.

I know of three issues:
They tend to wear out in 150-200,000 miles.
If the B2 piston or band fails, the car only goes backwards.
If Kleb gets his hands in them, they only work in reverse and

I'm sure that Rusty has a cure for your tranny issue. If the car is in as
good a condition as you say it is, and you'd keep it, it would be worth the
price of a tranny from Rusty.

I am hearing that something else is wrong - he has swapped the tranny

A tranny from Rusty is gonna act the same - no go.

Not too bad -- belt driven OHC, so all you gotta do is take off the
vacuum pump, loosen the belt, and take off the injection pump drive
if its' on the rear (on the VW it's on the main belt).
Then remove valve cover and unscrew the head bolts. I think you can
disconnect the exhaust and

well, when I pulled the pan last week to do the filter, there was a
little shard of white plastic on the pan. I dont know what it came off
of. I guess its possible that another small piece of whatever it was

If this is the same as the Quantum, there is plenty of room to work

You would have to take the valve body apart -- not something for the
faint of heart. There are something like 15 check balls in various
sizes in there to drop
The one thing you can check by pulling the pan is probably the
governor, but I don't know for sure it's accessable on that
hmm, interesting. There was a little sliver of plastic in the pan when
I pulled it. Outer edge was sort of rounded like the complete piece
would have been a circle.
