Mercedes-Benz plans to roll out a wide range of diesel- and
hybrid-powertrain models over the next three years to cut fuel
consumption and CO2 emissions, and plans to put a B-class wagon powered
by a fuel cell into production in 2010.

Mercedes-Benz plans to have Bluetec diesel-hybrid models in its lineup,
beginning in 2010, as it seeks to produce and sell the world’s cleanest
sedans
http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070911/FREE/70911001/1024/FREE#.

The German automaker laid out its “Road to the Future” today at the IAA
in Frankfurt.

*Among its plans:*

# A diesel engine for the United States in 2008 that will meet emissions
regulations in all 50 states. The engine will be offered in the R-class
wagon, and ML- and GL-class SUVs.

# A hybrid version of the ML-class SUV in 2009. The powertrain mates at
4.6-liter V-6 engine with the Two Mode rear-drive hybrid system that
DaimlerChrysler
http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070911/FREE/70911001/1024/FREE#

has developed in conjunction with BMW and General Motors.

# A hybrid version of the S-class sedan will also be introduced in 2009.
This S 400 hybrid will mate a V-6 gasoline engine with an integrated
starter-generator. The starter-generator provides stop-start function,
and can power the car on only electricity for short distances. It also
adds an electric boost to the gasoline engine under heavy loads.

# Mercedes says the hybrid powertrain is rated at 299 hp, can accelerate
the large sedan from 0 to 100 kph (62 mph) in 7.3 seconds, yet burns
only 7.9 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (20.9 miles per gallon).

# A fuel cell version of the B-class small wagon will go into limited
production in 2010. Mercedes said the car will be powered by a new
generation of its fuel cell stack that is smaller, yet puts out more power.

# Versions of the E-class and S-class sedans powered by Bluetec diesel
hybrid powertrains are due in 2010. The powertrains will include a
four-cylinder diesel engine and seven-speed automatic transmission. The
E-class hybrid will burn 5.1 liters (1.3 gallons) of fuel per 100
kilometers, or about 47.6 miles per gallon.

# A version of the C class with the Bluetec diesel hybrid is due after
2010, Mercedes said.

[MBZ] Replacing Injectors (was Re: 1985 300SD Nasty Engine Vibration)

2007-09-12 Thread Kevin Kraly
I'm not sure if I would do it again with the '83 'SD, but I was able to move
each line out of the way on my '77 300D and tighten it back down onto the
new injector. This may have opened up the possibility for later line
breaks.

Re: [MBZ] 1985 300SD Nasty Engine Vibration

2007-09-12 Thread Scott Ritchey
Disconnect both ends of the injector lines. Get a 17mm crows foot and use
it with a socket extension and ratchet to loosen the nuts. Then the nuts
should screw off by hand. You can lift off all five injector pipes as an
assembly. This makes it very easy to access the injectors for
removal/install. You will need a special socket or a deep socket to RR the
injectors. You may need to loosen the clamps between the injector pipes to
allow more flex when you reinstall. Each nut should easily screw on by
hand.

I ordered the injectors from Rusty and am going to give it a try, BTW they
come with new heat shields. Can the injectors be removed without unloosening

the pluming at the pump end? Will it flex just enough to get the injectors
out and (hopefully in)?

The injectors listed on Rusty's site come complete with nozzle, etc.
All you need to do is remove the old injectors, replace heatshields, and
 install new injectors. :)

The nozzles are available separately for people who rebuild the
 injectors themselves.

New or rebuilt Bosch injectors are warranted to be within 10 bar
pressure of one another. They need to be matched to within 5 bar for the
engine to run smoothly. So, whether you rebuild or replace your
injectors, they need to be calibrated! Some shops are equipped to do
 this, but many are not.

Your explanation that front propshaft comes with the vibration damper
make a lot of sense in that the EPC does not list it seperately. The
picture depicted on the EPC suggests that the mount may be part of the
driveshaft.

It seems that my vibration is not strictly engine rpm related and am
considering that it might be differential mounts .

the 124.130 manual transmission definetly must have the damper ( the

 I'm very puzzled.

Can anyone confirm that the 124.130 ( manual tranny ) 300D has a
vibration damper ( behind front flex disc ) on the drive shaft?

The 124.130 with a manual transmission (the damper on automatics is
quite different) was designed to have a vibration damper on the
driveshaft, but some did not require one. The damper has NO effect on
engine vibration but ONLY on vibration related to ground speed. I have a

friend with a 124.003 with a 5 speed. When the damper collapsed (or more

accurately tore apart) he had it replaced.

On some cars (201s for sure) the only way the vibration damper is
available is along with front half of the driveshaft. At least one
member of this forum has replaced the front driveshaft to replace the
damper. There are several driveshaft specialist that claim they can
balance the shaft with or without the damper. Others argue that that is
not always possible.

Re: [MBZ] Post Falls SL

2007-09-12 Thread Jim Cathey
Gonna get those doors done, baby! First I needed to make moisture
barriers. I got one of the empty salt bags that I've used before, and
found that the 107 doors are too long for this to work. I couldn't
find the roll of plastic sheeting I'd bought for this purpose, but I
did find a plastic dropcloth I'd used to contain brick dust during the
fireplace insert install, and there were still some large undamaged
areas. I got out the 3M spray 77 glue and sprayed the interior of the
passenger door, then I draped the plastic sheet over the door and
started sticking it down. When it was taut I used scissors to cut out
around the door. (That worked well enough that I did the other door
just the same way.) I retrieved the door panel from the garage, dug
the mounting hardware out of the trunk, and put the door back
together. I had to get four replacement plastic panel clips from the
junk pile. One of the little chrome trim screws was gone, so I used
one from the 126 junkyard raid. Though not exactly the same it worked
well enough as a replacement.

The door looks good, works well, shuts solidly with no rattles, and
has a lock knob that both looks good and works. Success!

I went around to do the other side, but first I wanted to test the
keyless door lock solenoid. I used the new Harbor Freight multimeter
I bought yesterday, $2.88, and found that it has no continuity. When
power is applied, either polarity, nothing happens. Oh well! I can
operate on this later if I wish to install keyless entry.

I put the driver's door back together. I had to replace five of the
plastic panel clips on this side. I used a chrome armrest trim piece
from a 123 to substitute for the missing one, it isn't exactly right,
but it looks pretty good. The riveted hole for the rear chrome door
jamb trim piece had been drilled out so the correct small screws don't
fit anymore. I suppose I should weld it over and re-drill, but I
think I'll wait on that! The screw is just sitting in that hole. I
had to use four more of the 126 trim screws on this side.

The door also looks good, works well, and shuts solidly with no
rattles. More success! Both doors now sound like they ought to,
a nice solid 'thunk'.

[MBZ] Tool Cart

2007-09-12 Thread John Robbins
What do you guys think of this tool cart?

http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/shop/SUN-8013ABLDLX.html

Anybody have any other recommendations? Does the brand typically make
POS stuff? etc..

I need something that I can store in my house (neatly in a corner
somewhere) and then be able to roll it out to my driveway. Right now I
end up with tools all over the house because I'll leave them near the
front door when I have to stop working, but I haven't finished the
project yet. I don't want to spend more than $400 or so.

Thanks!

Doesn't look bad for the price. The question is whether you
want a tool cart or a roller cabinet, you should be able to
find a decent Craftsman 26 roller cab at Sears for about
that much. Either way, if there are stairs between the
driveway and your storage place you won't be happy.
It'll be a pain if your drive isn't paved too.

Another option, easier to move, but less attractive and a little low
to the ground, is to get a top chest ($130-200 on sale at Sears)
and mount it on a hand truck or appliance dolly. If stairs or
gravel are in your path, I'd go this route.

Here's a HF example, $130 cabinet, $110 chest, $66 for a middle
drawer section, or $300 for all. No idea as to quality:
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=39421

Here's a cheap cart, looks lower quality, size not mentioned:
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=47418

26 single drawer cart, obviously cheap, but only $50:

I think I got my metric crowsfoot flare nut wrenched from JC Whitney, maybe
15 years back. They were not expensive. They were also not fancy. Each is
a flat chunk of metal, maybe 3/16 or 1/4 inch thick with a square hole for a
3/8 in drive and the hex for the nut.

I have had no problems with those, maybe because they are so beefy. However
I have had problems with cheap smaller flare wrenches in brake lines.

Those things are sweet! Napa had one on display a few months back , and

and they're up to $389 now
http://www.napaonline.com/MasterPages/NOLMaster.aspx?PageId=470LineCode=BKPartNumber=8156264Description=Tool+Cart
that is one nice setup, even better in person than the picture. All very
usable. I've been trying to scrounge up enough duckets to get one around
all the other projects ( and I've already got a full size Craftsman roll
away and a couple of tool carts, but I need something like that to cut
down on the footwork for the most often used tools, the roll away is
filled to the brim with specialty tools )

That would be perfect for what you need to do. A full cabinet would be
essentially worthless, they're too heavy to move far to begin with .
Load one down with tools and you wouldn't be able to get it in and out
of the house The wheels on those things are only meant to maneuver a
few feet here and there on smooth concrete and to roll it out to the
truck to bring them home when you quit ( those real big tool boxes, the
only way to move them when loaded is to call out a roll off flat bed
tow truck and have the things winched on . Tow truck drivers get a lot
of calls for that on Fridays when mechanics quit and on Mondays when
they start new jobs :-)

I also vote for looking into one of the Craftsman (Note: wait for a sale . .

fit your needs, but be sure you get one with the bearing slides if you've
got lots of tools as any weight in the cheaper style hanging drawers causes

Chevron Techron Concentrate for gasoline engines works very effectively
in INDIRECT INJECTION engines as used in 20th century Mercedes diesels
sold in the US. Techron Concentrate should NOT be used in direct
injection engines. It is at least as effective as Diesel Purge (in my
opinion) and is much easier to use (diesel Techron is designed for
direct injection diesel engines and MAY work well in indirect injection
engines - I've never tried it). The fact that it takes hours of
operation (a bottle of Techron Concentrate dissolved in a tankful of
fuel run through the injection system) to do it's job rather than the
20-30 minutes that it takes to run concentrated Diesel Purge thru the
injection pump has led some people to infer that Diesel Purge is more
effective.

Diesel Purge has a very high Cetane index and that substantially quiets
the engine while the DP is present which suggests that the cleaning
effect is very quick. In truth the quieting while the DP is running thru
the engine is largely unrelated to the cleansing effect, but results
from the higher Cetane index. This is quickly proven when the engine is
reconnected to the diesel supply and much of the noise slowly returns as
the Cetane index drops.

[MBZ] OT the travails of a 2 ford family

2007-09-12 Thread Donald Snook
After discovering that my 1990 300SEL had a blown head gasket, I decided
to trade it in on a 2001 Ford Expedition. So, now my wife and I have a
97 Explorer and a 2001 Expedition. It is nice to drive a car that has
such modern luxuries like a CD changer, keyless entry, heated seats,
etc. What usually happens is that I get tired of a car in about 18
months. I like the fun of having a car new to me. I spend time
fixing/maintaining everything and shining it up and enjoying the newness
(even if they have all been used cars). So, I will drive the Expedition
for 18 months or so, then give it to my wife and I will her Explorer and
find another Mercedes. I will probably go back to the 124. I really
enjoyed my 90 300D. I really like the 90-95 124's. The diesels are
probably better cars, but I still like the gassers also.

I picked up the Expedition last week on Friday. The dealer is also my
mechanic. He always has 6-7 cars for sale. Mostly Mercedes and an
occasional BMW. But, he had this Expedition. It belonged to one of his
customers who also had a newer S class. Well, he wanted my old wheels
(the 15 hole wheels) from my 126. He was going to take off the newer
wheels I bought from him and put them on a 94 320 Wagon and put my old
wheels back on my car. I didn't want to just give them to him and he
didn't want to spend a lot of money on them, so we worked out a deal. He
did an oil change, transmission flush, coolant flush, and rotated and
balanced the tires. So, I left the car on Friday afternoon and went
back at five to pick it up. When I got there, he was pushing it out of
the garage. The FUEL PUMP went out. So, I asked him is this was my
problem or his problem (I had not paid for the car yet). He said it was
his problem. He ended up having to replace the fuel pump ($500) and
spend all the labor. I know have a 2001 Expedition with a new fuel
pump.

balance the shaft with or without the damper. Others argue that that is

When I was doing my 240D to manual transmission 300D conversion, the
123.130 driveshaft I acquired in Austin had a vibration damper on the

I sent the driveshaft to Driveline Service of Atlanta to be refurbished.
The balanced it without the damper because the part was not available and
because mine was in so bad shape.

That does not seem to work with some driveshafts. Mercedes incorporated
the damper to meet their tolerances for noise and vibration. If it could
be routinely replaced effectively in a simpler/cheaper way in the field,
they would have done it that way (they sell dampers for automatics -
just not manual transmission driveshafts).

Mercedes also will not allow the transmission U joint to be replaced
in the field - you must replace the driveshaft. That's because few shops
have either the machinery or technical skill to meet the Mercedes
specifications.

Driveline Service of Atlanta or the driveline shop in the northwest
(can't find the name right now - they also advertise in the Star) both
claim they can rebalance a shaft without the damper, or after replacing
the U joint but I've heard from a few of their customers that were
dissatisfied (and more than that, that were pleased). I have not used
either service. I have replaced several driveshafts.

won't be happy. It'll be a pain if your drive isn't paved too.

Fortunately, I don't have to deal with stairs or gravel. :) All I've
got to deal with is the threshold on the side door, and the rough finish
of the driveway.

Glenn Brown wrote:

I don't have many positive things to say about the two Craftsman
toolboxes we have at work. They don't have the ball-bearing drawers
though which is the main reason I don't like them.

The main reason I don't want to get a full blown rolling cab toolbox is
because I have to lift it over the threshold... It'd be nice if it
didn't take two people to lift one side of it ;)

That would be perfect for what you need to do. A full cabinet would be
essentially worthless, they're too heavy to move far to begin with .
Load one down with tools and you wouldn't be able to get it in and out
of the house The wheels on those things are only meant to maneuver a
few feet here and there on smooth concrete and to roll it out to the
truck to bring them home when you quit

Thats the train of thought I had for looking at carts vs. cab boxes. I
don't mind keeping all the specialized tools elsewhere, since I don't
typically use them every time I work on the car. So no reason to load
the toolbox down with them :)

Currently I use these things from Lowes (they've gotten more expensive

tired of bringing each one in/out of the house and having them scattered

Re: [MBZ] Tool Cart

2007-09-12 Thread Scott Ritchey
I don't know anything about that particular brand. But that type of cart is
not good unless you have a level path (no steps, sills, etc) from storage to
driveway. The cart gets real heavy and the wheels are small. You may be
better served by several tool boxes or bags that are easy to carry and
organized by job type (e.g. one for wrenches, sockets, etc; one for
plumbing, one for general tools, etc.)

At my net place, I have a dirt yard and two steps up to my barn so my roller
chest is useless except as a storage cabinet.

I need something that I can store in my house (neatly in a corner

end up with tools all over the house because I'll leave them near the

Re: [MBZ] OM603 Engine Vibration - new twist

2007-09-12 Thread Tom Hargrave
No problem replacing the U-joint without re-balancing so long as you mark
the shafts so that they go together the same way. You just need to mark all
three pieces with paint or a scribe so that you can put them together the
same way they came apart.

The U-joint can only go together correct or 180 degrees out. The slip joint
is splined can go together multiple ways. You need to make sure that the
paint or scribe marks are accurate enough to make it easy to put the slip
joint back together exactly the way it came apart.

You don't need to be as careful with the flex disks but some mark the shafts
so that they go together the same way anyway.

probably better cars, but I still like the gassers also.

I picked up the Expedition last week on Friday. The dealer is also my
mechanic. He always has 6-7 cars for sale. Mostly Mercedes and an
occasional BMW. But, he had this Expedition. It belonged to one of his

wheels back on my car.

Mine is a regular 17mm Craftsman socket with a bolt welded to one
side, and a slot the width of the injection line ground into the
opposite side. It's worked great over the years, but doesn't fit the
60x engines! The 2 60x engines I've worked on have enough room to use

Re: [MBZ] Post Falls SL

2007-09-12 Thread Jim Cathey
After work, given that I need to do some other things in the
mornings for awhile, I tackled the front grille. I pulled it off and
found a bit of rust starting against the hood, so I brushed that off
and rattle-canned it with the color paint.

The plastic finned grille had a chunk off one end of a fin, which I
had found inside the fender, and a half-out chunk from the inside of
the big front star. I removed these from the chrome surround, cleaned
them off, and used cyanoacrylate glue to tack them back together. I
used Shoe Goo to back the repairs up, this is applied where it won't
show and is responsible for the strength of the repair. I cut some
chunks of scrap gray Mercedes grille material to serve as backing
pieces. Acetone was used to clean everything before gluing.

The chromed grille surround was getting some visible rust starting
on its inner surfaces, so I put it in a bucket to try the electric
rust-removal trick. We'll see how it goes, it takes time to
operate. I'm not sure how it will interact with the chrome. As of
course I can't paint the result I may try some clear spray to protect
from moisture and air. I checked the bucket after an hour or so and
preliminary results are good: the water's getting nasty looking, the
orange rust is gone from the metal and has been replaced by black, and
the chrome appears unaffected. I rearranged the sacrificial anode to
'see' more of the rust and resumed the process. We'll let it run
overnight.

He's not much of a Mercedes mechanic if he doesn't know that 124 and
126 wheels are not interchangeable (the offsets are very different).

Actually, you are wrong! These wheels do fit. I know because I have
been driving on them for the last several months. The 8 hole wheels came
off of a 1994 E320 wagon. We put them on my 126 without any problems.
They are genuine Mercedes wheels.

Maybe old Kirby was shocked that is was taken out and put into use.

My Kirby, that I bought in '80 when I got married (it's almost a rite of
passage in Illinois to but a Kirby after getting' hitched), is still going
strongbut I must say the Dyson I bought 5 years ago sucks circles around
Kirby. Those Dysons are da bomb. They are a must if you have dogs or cats.

I bought a set of 201 wheels once to put on a 107. The
