I’m a bit peeved at shippers, too.

I have a 30” Apple Cinema Display I want to move from Tampa to Flagstaff. I
have an official Apple shipping box for one in Flagstaff. Because the shippers
base most of their costs on volume and not weight, it would cost me $130-$140
to ship an 8 pound empty box from Flagstaff to Tampa. Once a monitor is in it,
it would only add about $10 for the additional weight.

So now I’m just going to have to pack it myself in some sort of non-standard
box. It’s still going to cost a boatload of $$ to ship it, but at least I’ll
only have to do it in one direction.

Then I just have to hope the carrier doesn’t destroy it as they often do. I’ve
already had two Mac Pros smashed by carriers when shipped in factory boxes.

Eventually the owner (sounds like it's not the property disposal manager
at an insurance company) has to sell it to the high bidder or take his
ML and go home.

If you're the high bidder every week, you've got the first part covered.
Normally they'd at least offer the high bidder the opportunity to buy at
their reserve price, but they're not even doing that with you. Weird.

Shipping is such a crap shoot. I ordered a bunch of stuff from Rock Auto for
the snowmobile club on Thursday, oil filters (box 1 of 3) showed up yesterday
afternoon...
As a side note we saved a BUNCH of money going with Rock auto. Oil filters for
a 12v Cummins were $7 each for WIX, Hastings Fuel filters $5 each!I bought
windshield wipers for all four groomers, the most expensive was $6 for 26", the
wipers alone would have been 4x the price at FLAPS...

[MBZ] OT: Macs

> 30” Apple Cinema Display... Mac Pro

A doughty combination. I'm typing this on mine right now, while it churns
in the background running some builds in a VM.

I just gifted my brother a similar setup, but with the 23" monitor.
His stupid PC is always 'dying', and he's giving $50 a pop to the
local computer geeks to resurrect the registry, or whatever it is that
always goes bad on Windoze. Not that he's got the money to waste
that way, living on disability as he does.

My son, home from school for now, has plugged a 30"-er into his
Macbook Pro. Seems to like it. (Even with its fading yellow-ish
backlight.)

[MBZ] Clean oil off belt track

2022-01-15 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
So the 642 was leaking oil from the oil filter housing gasket and basically
dripping into the belt which was slinging oil everywhere. Replaced both of the
gaskets but have not reinstalled the belt yet. I want to clean the oil off the
pulleys at least before installing a new belt. Typically I would soak it with
engine decreased then hose off or power wash the front of motor with car
outside. Since it’s in the shop I can really do this. What would be a good
product to use or method to a more localized approach to just cleaning the
pulleys with car in the shop. Other option would be to just put it back
together to pull it out of shop the. Do degreaser and power wash.

Re: [MBZ] High mileage Tesla

2022-01-15 Thread mitch--- via Mercedes

Low mileage Tesla story.
I would have returned it before driving it two blocks.

https://www.thedrive.com/news/43876/tesla-model-3-owner-discovers-car-was-delivered-missing-a-brake-pad

Gillmore, who showed her written exchanges with Tesla to The Drive, took
delivery of her EV on Dec. 19, only to notice a worrying scraping sound
from the driver-side rear wheel while driving. The following day, she
reported the issue to Tesla, which told her no appointments for
inspection were available any sooner than three weeks out. The next day,
Gillmore was offered a prompter appointment at a third-party shop, but
feeling it was inappropriate, she declined, only for Tesla to later tell
her the offer was a mistake, and finally request a video of the issue.

Gillmore recorded the above video to send to her Tesla service advisor,
who claims multiple technicians listened to the video, only to declare
"the brakes sounded normal for a performance Model 3." Gillmore didn't
buy it and pushed to get an appointment sooner, only to be told to get
the car towed in if she was worried.

She was right to be concerned, as by Dec. 23 the noise had gotten so bad
that she visited an independent local Tesla shop, where a technician
removed a wheel to discover the inside brake pad on the left-rear corner
was missing. In a video captured by said tech, he posits that the car
likely needs not just a pad, but also a new rotor and brake caliper.
Only after seeing this video, Gillmore says, did the Tesla service
center invite her in.

All I had a very nice ride home, but was a bit nervous drive my brand new car
in track. The new car does have the vehicle collision avoidance warning
indication for changing lanes which is nice. It has navigation, heated seats,
retractable side mirrors, and other things that I have not discovered yet. The
bad news is NO operators manual. It is no where to be found, unless it has a
special storage compartment that I haven’t found. I did find a PDF copy of it
on MBUSA web site, I have downloaded and am starting to review. Will let you
know how things are going after I have driven it for awhile. Have schedule a
general car inspection at our local Mercedes dealer to make sure there are no
issue with the car, fingers crossed. This car requires DEF, so should be
interesting to see how often that needs to be refilled. Car has a little over
86,000 miles on it.

I am not sure, prices ranged were from 18K - 23K. There also weren't as many
diesel version to choose from. Diesels may not have been as desirable and
were a little lower price. It is strange when looking at the cargurus web
page itwas listing at 18.5K, but when I went to the dealer it was list at
24.5K with a heavy discount. There was a 2014 ML350 Bluetec that I was also
considering. It was listed at 21K with 119,000 miles on it. It was white and
I really do not like white.

Re: [MBZ] The copart ML

2022-01-15 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
I once tried to buy the property next to mine, which was vacant (had never been
built on) at the time. I submitted a written offer to the seller, who was a
flipper who had bought it at a tax lien auction (wish I'd been paying attention
and knew about that, I would have been bidding).

Anyway they returned my letter with my offer amount crossed out and their
original asking price written in. I figured it was over at that point, since
they didn't move at all.

In retrospect with what property values have done lately, it would still have
been worth it, but their ask was rather ridiculous at the time based on
comparative sales.

Now I have a neighbor there and in the summertime it seems like every evening
from 5:00pm to dark he is running some kind of power equipment. Lawn mower,
garden tiller, weedeater, leaf blower, chain saw... something. If not that, his
kid is riding a noisy two-stroke dirt bike around the property. I'm very much a
live-and-let-live type of neighbor and people live out here in the country so
they can do stuff like that, but he really stands out from the other neighbors
in just being constantly noisy during times when most people are wanting to
settle down and relax at the end of the day. I keep hoping that he'll
eventually get all the trees cleared that he wants and have his property to his
liking and will quiet down. But I also am thinking maybe he's just outside
working to get away from the rest of the family ;-)

Pt!
Everyone knows that a W115 240D will do a million miles on the original
motor and get over 40 mpg and blow ice cold AC.
What is the big deal about an electric car? What has he spent on
electricity to fuel his car and how much of it was produced from coal?

On 14/01/2022 7:00 PM, OK Don via Mercedes wrote:

*One Tesla Model S Has Gone Nearly 1 Million Miles And Needed SomeMajor
Repairs*epairs
A Tesla owner in Germany may just have the record for highest-mileage Model
S in the world. He recently rolled over 1.5 million kilometers (932,256
freedom miles if you live in the U.S.) in his Model S P85.

Getting to this number was no cheap feat for the owner. It’s been through
quite a number of parts

in
its lifetime. The owner, Hansjörg von Gemmingen-Hornberg says the car is on
at least its third battery. The first was replaced under warranty at about
180,000 miles. The second was replaced after about 93,000 additional miles
before the third battery was installed. So far, the Model S has done more
than 621,000 miles on that third battery.

That isn’t all. The car also needed four drive motors to reach over 900,000
miles. The P85 has only one drive motor on the real axle. That means three
different drive motors have failed.

But how has this Tesla racked up so many miles? Well, the owner uses it as
a taxi. He also chronicles his journeys on his very-German Twitter account

.

#NeuesProfilbild

pic.twitter.com/wEsk1ZW3yC
— Hansjörg von Gemmingen - Hornberg (@gem8mingen) January 6, 2022

According to InsideEVs, he reached the 900,000-kilometer (559, mile)
mark in July 2019. That means he has averaged about 150,000 miles annually
since then. That works out to over 400 miles a day packing onto this
Tesla’s odometer.

There are a few high-milage Model S’s trolling around the world right now,
like this 425,000 mile example
.
But it’s safe to say the German car blows this one out of the water.

The owner has stayed mum on exactly how much the repairs have cost over the
life of his Model S – perhaps because it would make no logical sense to
pour this money into a car to keep it going, or perhaps because it isn’t
our business.

So, while we may not know how much he’s paying for the privilege of driving
a Model S nearly a million miles in less than ten years, we will certainly
be able to follow along on his Twitter account

.

UPS has major ground package consolidation hubs in various parts of the
country. Arizona, Utah, Georgia, Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois. There are
many air hubs in the US too, the largest being "Worldport" in Louisville, KY.
Depending on the logistics of a package, it may just make stops at minor
"feeder" hubs, and then to the hub local to you, and then your doorstep. Many
Amazon packages are shipped by air. If your package originated in California, I
would guess it went by air to the Kentucky hub, and now is in transit to a hub
closer to OK. You'll have your stuff by Tuesday, Wednesday at the latest. The
UPS tracking system eliminated showing every stop a package makes on its
journey through the system, at least for the end user.

Yep, made the valve adjustment bent wrenches with a couple of cheap wrenches, I
think they are "Companion" brand from the store formerly known as Sears. Cheap

If you work on cars at all you need a blowtorch. Does not need to be the full
oxy-acetylene rig, just a standard hardware store propane torch will be hot
enough.

Re: [MBZ] Looking for My next Mercedes

2022-01-15 Thread Robert Massmann via Mercedes

Hope all goes well?

I am not sure, prices ranged were from 18K - 23K. There also weren't as many
diesel version to choose from. Diesels may not have been as desirable and
were a little lower price. It is strange when looking at the cargurus web
page itwas listing at 18.5K, but when I went to the dealer it was list at
24.5K with a heavy discount. There was a 2014 ML350 Bluetec that I was also
considering. It was listed at 21K with 119,000 miles on it. It was white and
I really do not like white.

Rock Auto can have some great prices, especially their close-outs. Just have to
watch the shipping. They ship parts from different locations, and each one will
have a separate shipping charge. That can eat up the savings if you're not

Re: [MBZ] UPS

2022-01-15 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
These shippers use a hub-and spoke model. All the packages go to a hub for
sorting and then out to regional facilities for further sorting/delivery.

At one time in the early days of FedEx, *every* package went to Memphis
overnight for sorting and then back out towards its final destination. I think
they have more hubs now, and the different shipping options (ground, 2nd day,
next day, etc.) may vary, but a large bit of their overnight express shipping
still goes through Memphis.

Engine degreaser or some simple green cleaner and an old tooth brush to
scrub it, wipe down good

If you don't have a steam cleaner you really should get one, that would
make the job go pretty easy as the green cleaner and some steam will
blast all the crap off easy without power washing.

product to use or method to a more localized approach to just cleaning the

A 15-20yo G is 10% the price of this thing or less but I guess if you

A lot depends on your proximity to distribution centers and who is doing the
last mile. I get stuff next day all the time in Tampa, but in Flagstaff it’s
dependent on when I order it, and rarely less than three days.

[MBZ] Manual Swap into a Diesel W126

2022-01-15 Thread Jack Crone via Mercedes
Hi yall, I'm going to attempt to do a manual swap into my 87 300sdl
sometime in the future although I haven't decided when yet. Depends
entirely on when i finish my om617 swap into a 85 ram d100. Anyway so I
have pulled the flywheel, clutch, shifter assembly, front half of the
driveshaft, flex disc, and transmission from what is either an 01 or 04
C230 Kompressor with a stick. I believe the trans designation is 716.4xx
although I'm not 100 percent sure on this. Since I can't find a set of
pedals for a w126 and couldn't figure out how to pull the ones from the
c230, yes I know I can modify w123 pedals but those are hard to find too.
My buddy recommended using pedals from an e36 bmw 3 series so I'm going to
source a clutch pedal assembly from one and make the brake pedal work. The
transmission is within an inch in total length to the propshaft of the
722.3 that came stock in the 300sdl so I don't believe I have to modify the
length of the driveshaft which is nice although I do have to convert the
prop on the driveshaft to the one from the c230 but that shouldn't be too
difficult to do. I was sending this out partially in case anyone else ever
wanted to do this and also because i would like any advice yall may have on
anything I maybe missing.
Thanks,
Jack

Re: [MBZ] Manual Swap into a Diesel W126

2022-01-15 Thread Jack Crone via Mercedes
Some things I forgot to mention in my last email. Firstly, I believe the
flywheel should bolt up although I will have to try that out after this
icestorm blows over. No my car works and ironically I just swapped the
trans but I don't want to have to deal with transmission problems ever
again because my last one puked a quart of fluid every 150 miles or so
because 3 of the bolts that held the pan on stripped. Secondly the
transmission should bolt up to the om603 in the 300sdl, no this isn't a
om617 w126 and yes I know the starter on an om617 is on the other side.
Although I haven't done measurements yet on where the shifter will fall it
appears just from looking at it that it might fall pretty close to where
the automatic shifter would be in a stock configuration. Although I haven't
checked if the tooth count I'd the same for both flywheels if I need to I
can always go back for the starter on the c230 and just use that, hopefully
it's adequate for the diesel but we'll see. To bypass the neutral safety
switch I probably will just shift it so it thinks it is in neutral, and
just leave it plugged in ziptied out of the way. Although I haven't figured
out how I will wire up the reverse lights if need be i can wire up a switch
to turn them on and off. Hopefully I remembered everything but I will add
on if I forgot anything.
Thanks,
Jack
