The handle should be able to slip a bit with a loosened grip. There should be
a swell
at the end to keep it from getting away from you. I can't describe it exactly,
but there's
a position change on the handle, by one hand at least, during the swing. A
smooth
wooden handle, correctly designed, is a joy to use.

> The faster the maul goes the more force but it's easy to go overboard and

Part of proper technique is ALWAYS acting like the target might 'poof'
disappear on you,
and so your hand ending position should always be such that when pivoting from
there
the head CAN'T hit you. Hands a bit lower and well forward from what is
probably most
comfortable.

Comfortable, at least, until you lose some toes.

Re: [MBZ] Battery Fun

2022-03-23 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
> switching the battery "off" removes it from all current draws

Once upon a time you didn't need such things. My Falcon, for example,
lacking a clock and having the old relay-style generator voltage regulator,
has ZERO parasitic current draw when sitting. (Make sure the battery top
is clean, that's the worst leak point there.)

Alternators, for example, rely upon the quality of the reversed junctions
in the rectifiers to keep from sucking the battery down when not generating.
Minuscule leakage, generally, but not zero. Throw a clock, or a computer
into the mix and you pretty much MUST have a disconnect then.

I've been putting those screw-down disconnects in the ground leads on
our stored cars. The rated current is inadequate, but that's because they
have an insulator and run all the current through the screw. If you peel it
off they make full face contact, increasing the current capacity, but it does
mean you have to remove the screw fully and separate the halves to cut
off. Hence doing it in the ground side, where the 'free-balling' halves can't
get into too much trouble while disconnected.

Pretty common in heavy equipment too. Helps to keep kids from taking equipment
for a joyride. We have shutoffs on all the grooming equipment.
I put one on my Farmall Super M last year, much easier than disconnecting the
battery manually. I think I'll put one on the Ford this year, it doesn't drain
the battery particularly but again, lessen the chance of it getting ridden
around without permission.

Somebody who really wanted to steal it still could but this is mostly for the
kids...

yeah this looks like a total bodge but maybe someone would pay that kind

All price points for a truck of this vintage, so the ask price isn't solid

Re: [MBZ] Battery Fun

Mine has some kind of a rubber handle, I don't love it, it slides around a
little. I've glued it on a couple times...

The faster the maul goes the more force but it's easy to go overboard and lose
a foot...

I prefer a wooden handle, I think the fiberglass send more vibrations. I do
like that that one has a 36" handle, too many of them are too short.

I've got one of these:

Sometimes it's hard to tell who is in charge when swinging something that heavy.

Re: [MBZ] Battery Fun

2022-03-23 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Which reminds me, my buddy has been farting around with his log splitter for
awhile. It won't crank at all. Battery reads 12.xv and doesn't drop at all
under load that he can see. Figures it's locked up, it'd sat outside awhile.

He goes and buys a Harbor Freight 13hp, guess what, that won't crank either.
Jump it off the truck and it starts just fine.

I think his problem is his el-cheapo Harbor Freight meter. I've had the cheap
ones and they're junk. The $30 one is surprisingly good but the $6 one, not so
much.
