If you mix the kitty liter or play box sand with rock salt, and put it back
in the bags and duct-tape them shut, you will have a mix that gives you
weight, traction, melts ice, and won't freeze into a solid brick when you
need it most - even if it gets wet.

There was some discussion of that in the mercedes shop magazine a few
issues back if I may paraphrase as compared to gassers, it was
interesting
because of the concepts we take for granted.

a) Gassers fill the cylinder with fuel/air, you compress and ignite
the mixture with one or more spark plugs, because of how
the explosive wave form travels it usually leaves unburned fuel at
the outer edges of the "cold" cylinder wall, so you never consume all
the fuel.
Diesels on the other hand inject fuel into hot air, the fuel explodes
consuming all the fuel since the fuel usually does not reach a cold
spot in the cylinder before igniting.

b) Gassers require vacuum to pull fuel air/mixture into cylinder, and
provide the ventura effect for carburettors, a side effect of this is
engine braking on hills and manifold vacuum to drive door locks.
However pulling a vacuum by the pistons actually requires lots of
energy, so you consume more gas to produce the manifold vacuum,
perhaps lots more energy than a vacuum pump. I realize that fuel
injection and turbo gassers change this equation, still air volume
and gasoline is varied resulting in manifold vacuum on most gassers.
Diesel don't have this problem, so less energy required to idle since
the engine is not spending energy being a huge vacuum pump.

c) Diesel fuel by volume has lots more energy than gas, so less is
needed to do a given amount of work.

[MBZ] afterglow controller.

2005-10-05 Thread John M McIntosh
Somewhere I have it written down the afterglow control for my 83
300TDt would be

Bosch 0 281 003 096 and perhaps the MB part number is 025 545 5432

anyone know if that is correct?

With winter coming on, I thought I would move to the afterglow
controller and I plan to visit
a junk yard or two and see if I get lucky with the few diesels lying
about. However having confirmation
on the part numbers is best before I pull and pay for something.
Assuming anything is there, besides I'm
sure I could find some other part for the fleet in any case, also
it's an excuse to poke about...

PS Yes all my glow plugs are post glow bosch.

Re: [MBZ] positive pressure system (was Jug of soy)

2005-10-05 Thread OK Don
It's been a long time since I messed with DE and pool filters, but
what I remember was mixing the DE in water to form a slurry, then
pouring that into the filter. The DE got plastered onto the filter
substrate and acted as the filtering media.
Do you mix the De in oil, water, or just dump it into the filter housing?

I like your solution - just trying to figure out the details --

Re: [MBZ] positive pressure system (was Jug of soy)

2005-10-05 Thread dave walton
The important elements are 10" home water filters and a procon vane
pump pulled off a carbonator. I use standard filter elements as a
structure to hold diatamaceous earth. The DE is my main filter
material. I run at 120 psi give or take. I've played with cascading
serial and parallel filters. Make sure you add an extra 1 micron
filter at the end to catch any DE that gets by the others. It is
extremely abrasive. Each time you start filtering, let the system run
for a few minutes before you start collecting the output. Same goes
for when you change filters. I like using the DE because the water
filters that hold it never get dirty. Once they load up, you pull the
element, squeeze off the gunk and start over. DE is dirt cheap and
available at any pool or spa store.

Re: [MBZ] cool swap

2005-10-05 Thread LT Don
I am hoping to dump the Buick (probably give it to Megan for college use,
maybe as a highs school graduation present) and get Debbie a diesel S-Class
in the spring. I think a 190D would be a better choice, but one the wife is
used to the "arm room" of a Buick it is difficult for her to downsize to the
C-Class size.

Re: [MBZ] cool swap

2005-10-05 Thread Christopher McCann
actually, she is. I've been driving it mostly -
working out minor bugs (like clogged sunroof drains,
malfunctioning rear locks, etc) so she has warmed up
to the SD in the mean time (now that the van is gone).
Also, the dealership has had it all week doing the
trap recall - whole new exhaust system and they check
turbo boost - should be done tomorrow or Friday.

A sure sign of interest was when she called me today
to ask if the oil pressure should be statying at 3
while driving (the SD, which she was afraid of b4 -
too much hood). I explained the whole deal to her and
told her I was happy that she was looking at the
guages and she said, basically, that she wanted to
learn how diesels work since she'll be driving one. If
you knew my wife (who expresses interest in crossword
puzzles only), this is a VERY good sign.

It really was her choice. I looked it over and told
her if she wanted it, I'd buy it. She wants her car
converted to VO first, which I agreed to. She looks
cool in a 124 wagon. Should post a pic sometime.

B20 (or B10 or B5)rarely causes any problem, but there are NO
guaranties. Higher concentrations often cause more problems.

I thin with Diesel or Kerosene. You will have to play with the
percentages yourself. A lot depends on the type and condition of the
waste oil. I just dump in all in the tank. I don't premix. You have to
thin more was it gets colder.

OK Don very wisely asked:

"Very good! And the Mrs., is she happy also ???"

After all, that's all that counts isn't it.
If we (men) would all learn that early on our (men's) lives would be less
stressful.

Re: [MBZ] Biodiesel

2005-10-05 Thread OK Don
Yes. I think, anyway. No one that I've heard about has had the rumored
desolving of rubber fuel lines. The one thing to be aware of is that
BioDiesel is a grat solvent and cleaner - so it will clean all of the
gunk out of your fuel system and deposit it in the fuel filters. I
don't know how much of an effect B20 has, but I'd be prepared to
change them frequently until the system is clean again.
Disclaimer - I can't buy B20 or any BioDiesel here, and haven't
started brewing my own yet, so I'm reporting what I've read --

Re: [MBZ] Jug of soy

2005-10-05 Thread Christopher McCann
andrew,

1. ideally, you would heat in a 55 gallon steel drum
to dewater
2. pre-filter through thick denim into another barrel
3. pump (northertool.com - 1/2 or 1/4 hp clear water
pump is $40) into a
4. GE water filter ($40 at Home Depot) that filters to
5-15 microns.

In my AKP-Wagen, I simply filter through denim and
dump in tank, but that is playing with fire.

I will soon set up a much better system. Do carry
extra filters. Luther has been running 60% mixes or
so. Someone reported 75-80% mixes with the remainder
being Kero (it's thinner than D2). It will obviously
gel much faster in cold weather than D2.

sold the Sienna for $6500. Bought the 300TDt (1987)
for $6,000...with taxes, plates, inspection came to
$6,519 total. Lost $19 bucks on the deal. I'm happy.

Re: [MBZ] Bush warns of HUGE fuel increases this winter...WOW!

2005-10-05 Thread Christopher McCann
I won't be doing that, but Rudolf (Diesel) said such a
thing - farmers can grow their own fuel. Oil presses
are not that expensive. His enitre philosophy for the
engine was that by changing the fuel delivery system,
it would run on all sorts of locally available fuels.
WAY ahead of his time. Read a bio of him -
fascinating.

Re: [MBZ] Hurricane snow ties

2005-10-05 Thread dave walton
If you mix the kitty liter or play box sand with rock salt, and put it
back in the bags and duct-tape them shut, you will have a mix that
gives you weight, traction, melts ice, and won't freeze into a solid
brick when you need it most - even if it gets wet.

(waste vegetable oil) but you do not need to do anything to run
BioDiesel.
You can dilute SVO or WVO to some in fossil Diesel fuel without any conversion.
With the SVO and WVO the devil is in the details - there are many ways
to either supplement fossil Diesel with the oils, or run solely on
them, depending on what you do.
There is next to no risk from using BioDiesel produced to spec.

A properly running diesel is VERY efficient.

Don't assume that diesel anti-gel will work on biodiesel. I spoke with
a Power Research chemist at length a few years ago (the people that
make Pri-D and Pri-Flow) and was told that there are too many
differences between biodiesel and diesel for their stuff to be
effective. They had looked into making a biodiesel additive, but found
that there was too much difference in commercially available Biodiesel
for them to come up with something that always worked. They did offer
to custom blend a Biodiesel or Waste Oil antigel for $15 - $50K, but
warned that changing the feedstock of the biodiesel or the properties
of the Waste Oil would render it less effective and they would not
guarantee the results.
They did say that their Pri-Ocide microbicide would probably work as
well in WVO and Biodiesel as if does for Diesel - as far as killing
mold, spores, and fungus and whatever might try to grow in it.

Yep, I've gotta buy into the theory that biodiesel subsidy is
biased towards soy production. Any sensible subsidy would
be biased towards waste recycling, and would not favor soy over
peanut, canola, corn, etc.
By the same reasoning, we should not give a bigger tax credit
to somebody who buys a 25 mpg hybrid SUV than somebody who
buys a 50mpg hybrid car. (nor should we subsidize the 50mpg
hybrid car over the 50mpg diesel car)

I'm with you there, Bill. Here's my rant, back at ya:

During a pretty recent December, we got 54 inches of snow in
southeastern Wisconsin. That's 54 inches of snow in one month. It was a
wild blip on the bell curve, to be sure, but the nearest big city
(Milwaukee) averages about 3 feet of snow in a season. And I'm just on
the fringe of the serious snow belt. The Great Lakes are a snow-making
machine in the winter!

I love Wisconsin, but the weather can be ... er, character-building. I
deal with it. Winter is not all unpleasant -- in fact, it can be great
fun. Still, there are plenty of occasions when it delivers drudgery by
the bucketload.

Consider the worst chore you can think of. Now, imagine having a
chortling heckler ...
__
Russ - Your comments dredge up some non-pleasant memories of yet one more
late winter ice storm in Western Indiana with my brother in Central Florida
complaining that his AC was acting up. With your comments reminding me of
how I felt then, I will cease to heckle you or anyone about snow. That we
are now in our third day of rain from tropical storm Tammy revives some
memories of storms also.
Yes, my experiences of snow and ice driving are about 20 years old. At that
time many people used sand, but it would clump and you had a sand rock. I
never had a problem with cat litter not being easy to use and effective -
different brand? I appreciate your comments about new tires as I am
considering a trip to see my sister in NH this Winter - if I have found an
engine by then.
I am about ready to take a look at something like this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4579615413&rd=
1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1
What might be the things to look out for with something like this [other
than a steep purchase price]? My diesel mechanic son is in Columbia and
could check it out for me.

Hang in there and I hope you will not need to develop too much more
character this coming Winter.

to see if it will fire up in the parking lot at the end of a day without
smoking too badly.) The car seems to have more power and I've used a lot less
fuel for roughly the same number of miles as the last tankful.

How does biodiesel fare during the winter months? Won't it gel a lot faster? If
so, there will be a huge boost in anti-gel additive sales. A friend is buying a
1993 300D (2.5L turbo) and wants to use 100% biodiesel in it. Will he have to
convert his car over to it? I know of someone else who uses 100% biodiesel in
his Benz diesels without conversion and they run fine with no problems. So, who
is correct? Are these guys flirting with danger of some sort by using biodiesel
without a conversion kit for their cars?

Thx.

no "Earnest" here, so no problem... ;-P

since we all can shop in any market we want to, i can (and do) shop
wherever/whenever i want...

don't get it yet? look at it this way; if everyone were to post all the
cars they thought might be interesting to everyone else on the list
like you do, the S/N ratio would be worse here than it already is to
the point where the list would be (even more) 'unusable'.

posting stuff anyone can already see *if* they're interested is not
only redundant, it corrupts the usability of the list.

Re: [MBZ] Hurricane snow ties

2005-10-05 Thread Russ Maki

As with any area there are good and bad points.

Now, imagine having a
chortling heckler lounging nearby on a chaise, sipping a tall drink and
hooting while you perform said chore. As I said, winter isn't all bad,
and most of the ribbing on this list is good-natured -- but when you get
poked in the ribs 30 or 40 times a season, every season, it gets a
little old.

On to the subject of the post, sort of:

I have gone many years without snow tires. I've also ended up in the
ditch more than a time or two. Since I drive a lot at night these days,
I wouldn't have a car without them in the winter.

As I recall, you posted that you didn't find them necessary, based on
your winter driving experience (I surmise) some years ago. But modern
snow tires are a far cry from the old clunkers of the bias-ply days. The
H-rated tires (like the Nokian NRWs Ned K. and I were singing hosannas
to awhile back) drive like touring tires and can navigate an unplowed
road without drama. They've also been extremely durable -- Ned and I
have both gotten 40,000 miles out of our sets, and they're still
roadworthy. Other brands that use multicell rubber compounds don't hold
up as well.

I also recall you mentioning kitty litter as a winter driving aid -- I'm
not sure if you meant for weight in the trunk or to spread under the
wheels. If the latter, I'd have to disagree to a point. Once that stuff
gets saturated with moisture, it's wet clay. I prefer bags of playbox sand.

But then, I have snow tires, so I don't get stuck in the snow!

Russ

Re: [MBZ] Bio prices

2005-10-05 Thread David Goldsmith
I think we pay for them to mix it for us (plus it's
been suggested to me that the tax break is less for
B20 than it is for B99); I observed the same phenom
where I get mine: the price order, lowest to highest,
was B0 (by only $0.02), B99, B20, by about $0.10 or
so. Whether B0 or B100 is more expensive, B20
_should_ be in between; if it ain't just mix it
yourself at the pump (assuming where you buy it has
B100 or B99; if not, I guess you're out of luck. Easy
way to estimate how much B0 and B100 you need for B20:
estimate how much total you need, then divide by 5
(which is same as doubling and then dividing by 10)
put that much B100 in, then filler-up with B0; for
info purposes only, I do not endorse purchasing any
amount of fossil fuel).

If there is an advantage to the 5w 40 for the 617.9XX non turbo engine I
would like to hear it. 95% of my driving is long highway distance.

The biggest advantages of using the M-1 T&SUV 5W-40 is that it's got the
finest diesel specific blend and additive package that I know of and it
costs less than M-1 EXT 15W50. Your engine might not require all of the
good things that T&SUV M-1 offers, but they will hurt NOTHING and since
the oil is cheaper, what the heck - go for it. T&SUV uses only group IV
& V base stock so is a FULL synthetic.

Warning - I'm SURE that M-1 (and every other motor oil) will increase
substantially in price soon! As long a crude is selling for $60+ a
barrel, motor oil will go up in price.

There was a big discussion about this on the biodiesel list just a few
days ago.

Marshall Field wrote:

For the chemically inclined among us: If one were to add 1.5 oz of ordinary

I ask this for I was listening to a Nationally syndicated late night talk
show last week, and the guest said he had great success in his gasser using
2.5 oz of acetone per 10 gallons and achieving a 1/3 increase in fuel
mileage. He also commented that this increase was possible only if he used
premium gasoline and the gasoline did not have an alcohol additive.

But what caught my ear was the guest's comments about improved diesel fuel
mileage.

So fellow listers, has anyone tried this acetone thing? IF so, share with
the rest of us!!

In any case, if you chemical types give the go ahead that adding acetone is
not harmful, then I am for trying it out in my own cars.

Re: [MBZ] 33 1/3 increase in Diesel fuel mileage...Huh?

2005-10-05 Thread Marshall Booth
A properly running diesel is VERY efficient. With the engine loaded,
most of the fuel is completely burned - CO concentrations (incompletely
burned burned fuel) run well less than 0.5% (suggesting that most of the
fuel is already almost fully consumed) and particulates are quite low as
long as smoke is low. There is a finite amount of energy in the fuel and
MOST of it is being transformed into power when the engine is loaded.
ANY improvement is going to result in a VERY small increase in available
power (and will result in increased NOx emissions) or more efficient
combustion.

I think magnets on the fuel lines have as good a chance of improving
fuel economy and you only pay for the magnets ONCE!

BUT Adolph Busch was the first in America to

attended an opening of Busch's engine factory...lots

Well technically there is also the burn time. That is diesel fuel takes time
to burn. The problem is that at certain points in the piston travel changes
in the cylinder pressures will have different power outputs. Thus by
decreasing the burn time of the diesel fuel in theory you can get more
efficiency. For example if you can atomize the fuel better it will all burn
at start of combustion and contribute more to power and thus increase in
efficiency.

Basically it is like dirty injectors, they inject less fuel when dirty. You
still can get complete combustion but fuel mileage will go down due low
atomization.

that's the crux of the argument. IF DIESEL EXHAUST FROM A HEALTHY ENGINE HAS
ALMOST NO UNBURNED FUEL IN IT, THEN IT WON'T WORK. The Acetone argument is
that it reduces surface tension in the fuel and allows it to atomize better,
giving a more complete burn...if the burn is already 99% complete, THERE IS
NO WAY TO GET 33% more mileage. No way.

Also, my Indy, who has no problem with my putting all sorts of crap in my
240D tank was TOTALLY opposed even to 1/15 of 1% of acetone. Any amount,
will eat seals over time.

I do believe this theory is bogus, unless MAYBE you have bad
injectors...then the acetone may help the atomization. If all is working
well AND Tom is correct that there is little unburned fuel in a healthy
engine, then I've made up my mind - CAN'T WORK.

The acetone eats your seals.

The increased fuel (from your eaten seals) increases your mileage, for a

don't forget taxes, if you pay on food there. In PA
you do not pay taxes on unprepared food (or clothes).
In MO you do...but in MO you DONT pay taxes on

Re: [MBZ] 33 1/3 increase in Diesel fuel mileage...Huh?

2005-10-05 Thread Christopher McCann
that's the crux of the argument. IF DIESEL EXHAUST
FROM A HEALTHY ENGINE HAS ALMOST NO UNBURNED FUEL IN
IT, THEN IT WON'T WORK. The Acetone argument is that
it reduces surface tension in the fuel and allows it
to atomize better, giving a more complete burn...if
the burn is already 99% complete, THERE IS NO WAY TO
GET 33% more mileage. No way.

Also, my Indy, who has no problem with my putting all
sorts of crap in my 240D tank was TOTALLY opposed even
to 1/15 of 1% of acetone. Any amount, will eat seals
over time.

I do believe this theory is bogus, unless MAYBE you
have bad injectors...then the acetone may help the
atomization. If all is working well AND Tom is correct
that there is little unburned fuel in a healthy
engine, then I've made up my mind - CAN'T WORK.

right...in England about 70% taxes, but transportation
companies still havfe to pay the taxes, even if
farmers don't. Of course, US citizens pay a lower % of
their income on food than any other country in the
world, do our food prices going up, might just put us
at par with Europe, where it is still cheaper to buy
fresh canola oil than BioD/D2...who knows, we'll just
have to wait and see.

Re: [MBZ] 33 1/3 increase in Diesel fuel mileage...Huh?

2005-10-05 Thread Tom Hargrave
There is a serious problem with this theory.

For this or any other additive to work, you'd have to increase the amount of
energy available from the fuel but one gallon of diesel has a finite amount
of energy. And diesel exhaust contains almost no unburned fuel. In other
words, almost all of the available energy is already being extracted from
the fuel!

The same goes for the gasser mileage he's claiming.

This one belongs in the same pile as magnets that "align" your fuel atoms
and air filters that "straighten" your airflow.

Subject: [MBZ] 33 1/3 increase in Diesel fuel mileage...Huh?

For the chemically inclined among us: If one were to add 1.5 oz of ordinary
store-bought Acetone to every 10 gallons of diesel fuel, would the acetone
in that concentration cause any damage to seals, gaskets, injector pumps
etc?

[MBZ] Hurricane snow ties

No, that's not nasty, that's just sarcastic.

Russ - The reference was not to you but to the introduction of those nasty
hurricanes when I was gloating about no snow - and I did address the snow
tire issue after that. As with any area there are good and bad points.
For a personal rant: Try building a school system with the 127 languages
recognized in public schools in Dade County now - and places such as little
Havana where it is at times difficult to find anyone who speaks English [I
have been in restaurants where the waiters had to meet to figure out who
could take my order] and they do not need English in Dade any longer except
for some legal and health situations. Native English speakers are only a
bit above 20% of the population [Broward has only about 35% Hispanic
population so gives a better mixing with English]. Average age is 23 in
Miami/ Dade County compared to as high as 62 in some areas on the Florida
West coast. In many ways I enjoyed the cultural mix, but after dealing with
it for 20 years I needed to gloat about something.
I was born and raised here, and am still happy to be in Florida even so -
though not unhappy that Jacksonville is a far different place than Dade and
Broward.

must have them bored to fit the pistons. (std) You can buy the oversized
pistons and have the sleeves bored to fit them. Which I did on the last
rebuild I did, Hay.. every little extra cube counts with 67 HP :-D

I thought the 615 and 617 were sleeved. Can you bore those? Or do you
remove the sleeves, bore, and put it oversize sleeves, or

Or I'm I just "loosing it"?

W, yes and no. I have in the past purchased three Mercedes that were
'referred' through notes on mailing lists.

I for one enjoy the fact that someone takes a minute to compile such lists
(just as Kaleb and others from time to time forward eBay links to
interesting cars).

Not everyone has the same expectations for this list, or any other list for
that matter. Some threads I read in their entirety, others I delete without
reading for days at a time.

As long as my delete key works, I don't have a problem with S/N ratio,
within civilized limits ;-).

Just my $0.02, etc.

Or use an above-ground tank, if you have the real estate. Ever since
environmental regulations made it expensive to have buried tanks, I've
been seeing more above ground ones, especially for small-volume fuels
like kerosene.

Europe's situations is categorically different, though. European diesel
prices are high because of heavy taxation. Agricutural use is tax

close to our own.

[MBZ] 33 1/3 increase in Diesel fuel mileage...Huh?

2005-10-05 Thread Marshall Field
For the chemically inclined among us: If one were to add 1.5 oz of ordinary
store-bought Acetone to every 10 gallons of diesel fuel, would the acetone
in that concentration cause any damage to seals, gaskets, injector pumps
etc?

Hi Mitch,

The main problem with M102 motor is that you need to feed it good grade fuel
otherwise it is a bit of a slug. The do a little better with the manual box
but not much.

The M102 also likes to eat valves every now and then.
I am also not a great fan of the 124 chassis because of the lack of
headroom/legroom when compared to the 123.
I guess Germans stopped wearing hats while driving sometime during the 123's
reign.

Hi Gabriel,

No we don't have parrots who eat sheep far as I know.
The PETA mob need direction and focus on genuine cases of animal abuse such
as the dancing bears in China etc.
However when they have a go at honest Farmers trying to look after their
livelyhood then I will get stroppy.
The other day there was a picture in the local paper showing animal rights
activists dressed only in G-strings protesting against mulesing. Now I would
like to get those individuals over here and put them in the outback with
their hands tied so they can't wipe their bums and then see how they like it
when hundreds of flies use their crack as a nursery.

was like our nice suburban backyard where we sit and come up with our

BTW in case any of you where wondering the reason we "mutilate" our sheep
over here is to stop them becoming flyblown. What is flyblown you city
folks
are wondering? Flyblown is when flies lay their eggs(which turn into
maggots) around the sheep's behind, which leads to a rather slow painful
death for the sheep involved(if not treated in time). Think thousands of
maggots eating you alive.
Mulesing is the practise of removing part of the folds around the sheep's

from).
Also consider that over here some sheep stations are measured in square

Actually that is all a lie, our Farmers are all a bunch of sadistic
