2006-04-14 Thread Jim Cathey

Remember that $800 '87 300E that was at the U-Pull in their
drive-it-off lot? I about had a heart attack until I saw the
"E", but I remember thinking it was pretty close to being a
parts car. 200+kmi.

Well, now it is. I was at the yard today, and that car had
moved into the rape and pillage zone. I guess they didn't
get their price, nor even any tempting offers! It's been
raped some already, the console has been ripped in half.
I checked, and the sunroof is a mess. I did buy the
Becker 780 (?) out of it. Toying with going for the
outside temp display module, and maybe the airbag.

Let us just say that my kitchen [which will not be in use] will be without a
fire extinguisher while I travel the next few days. That visor has been in
the trunk about 4 -5 months, so all of the driving conditions you mentioned
were done, and I have not had it out or looked at it since I put it in.
Sounds like it might be missing a heat shield, though. Will have that
looked at as soon as I arrive in SC.

Hi Bill,
I'm not really sure exactly where the hole is you described - but my W123
has an aluminum heat shield over the rear muffler (or is that a resonator?)
with the exhaust pipes having no protection. I've never noticed any heat in
the trunk even after extended high speed drives, but that's in a 240D and
not a 300 engined model.

What kind of driving did you do during the period the plastic piece melted?
Any extended slow, creeping type of driving? Perhaps some sitting in one
spot for a while?

I'm surprised the exhaust retained that much heat so far from the engine.

Good luck -- I doubt it would ignite anything except something really flimsy
like paper or something flammable. - But I'd definately keep an extinguisher
handy.

look nice, though I never got around to installing it. It has been flat
and

pushed up against the seat wall of the trunk. I just took it out to pack
for our trip and noticed that it had melted in one spot. The plastic
cover

was completely gone in that area and the thick plastic visor has heated
enough to damage it quite severely in that one spot. I noticed that there
is an opening about a foot in from the left side and 8 - 10 " back from

but now I am more than a bit concerned about what would let that much heat

Just for the sake of complete information, it was only the early
Corvairs (1960 to 1964) that had a swing axle. From 1965 to 1969 they
had dual-joint half-shafts.

2006-04-14 Thread David Brodbeck

Zoltan Finks wrote:

Not to re-route the thread, but it seems that on some vehicles, there is
"wheel tilt" (for lack of the proper jargon) designed in intentionally. The
most dramatic example I can think of is the Baja bugs - Volkswagon Bugs
converted to a dune buggy-type setup. Wheel top tilted out in this case if I
recall. And I understand why - to allow for greater suspension travel -
followed by I think.

Older VW Bugs have a swing-axle suspension. The axle pivots in only one
place, near the differential, so as it goes up and down the 'wheel tilt'
(it's called 'camber') changes. Visualize holding a wheel in your hand,
by the axle, and swinging your arm up and down at the shoulder, and you
get the picture. At stock ride height, a Bug will have slight negative
camber (top of the wheel tilted in.) If it's lowered or heavily loaded,
it will have more negative camber. If someone's jacked up the
suspension for more ground clearance, it will have positive camber (top
of the wheel tilted out.)

The twin I-beam front suspension on 2WD Ford trucks and vans up 'till
the mid-90s worked in a similar way. If you've ever been next to one on
a rough stretch of freeway, the camber changes are very obvious as the
suspension works up and down.

A danger in this type of suspension is if the camber angle becomes too
extreme the contact patch can get very small as the tire rides up on the
edge of its tread. This was part of the reason Corvairs (which also had
swing-axle rear suspensions) had such squirrelly handling. Large
amounts of positive camber are especially dangerous because the axle can
try to tuck under the car under heavy cornering loads.

My question is: How in the heck does that
not cause very uneven tread wear?

It *does*, which is one of the reasons for rotating tires regularly.
Bugs were known for wearing the inside edges of their rear tires, and
Ford vans tended to wear the outside edges of their front tires.

A couple of months ago I bought a plastic sunroof visor thinking it would
look nice, though I never got around to installing it. It has been flat and
pushed up against the seat wall of the trunk. I just took it out to pack
for our trip and noticed that it had melted in one spot. The plastic cover
was completely gone in that area and the thick plastic visor has heated
enough to damage it quite severely in that one spot. I noticed that there
is an opening about a foot in from the left side and 8 - 10 " back from the
seat wall. No rust in the trunk and the rest of the floor seems pretty
good. I will first be happy I didn't stick an oily engine rag back there,
but now I am more than a bit concerned about what would let that much heat
come up through the trunk. Obviously the tail pipe is the source, but is
this usual, even if not to this degree, or something to keep a fire
extinguisher handy for until I can get it checked out? I leave in the
morning to see my mechanic son for a few days prior to hi

2006-04-14 Thread Christopher McCann
Wulf is a few miles from 212,212. I was thinking that I would not post it, but
then decided to and the reason being is that we post our problems, but rarely
does anyone post, "My car has been working just great and I had a wonderful
drive to so and so, etc" Palindrome postiong sort of says that.

Cheers to all of our cars, in spite of their occassional old age "aches and

Just noticed a new Infinity with the same veritical, wall-like sides.

And yes, I bet that's true - the feeling protected by high-sided vehicles.
Consider all the crash test evidence pitting passenger cars against trucks
and SUVs in side impacts.

I have heard that because there is oil, even R-12 acts flammable. And
that the oil is more likely to ignite than the butane or propane.

But I haven't tried it myself, so I don't really know...

Re: [MBZ] Car I passed last night

2006-04-14 Thread Peter Frederick
There is some negative camber designed in to provide better tire patch
on hard cornering, and usually the negative camber increases as the
wheel moves up to compensate for body roll. On the W124 it's visible
but not dramatic when the suspension is in good shape. When the spring
link bushings go, and/or the camber link rubber, it's very obvious,
ditto when accompanied by sagging springs or missing spring seat rubber.

Obvious negative camber means something needs to be fixed, usually.

Tire wear is also a bit higher on the inside, but at normal condtions,
the tread sits pretty flat on the road because the radial sidwalls are
fairly soft. BMWs have more negative camber than Benz, for instance,
but I've never seen that much more tire wear in the back. Rotating
tires correctly will also even things out.

Re: [MBZ] Car I passed last night

2006-04-14 Thread Zoltan Finks
Not to re-route the thread, but it seems that on some vehicles, there is
"wheel tilt" (for lack of the proper jargon) designed in intentionally. The
most dramatic example I can think of is the Baja bugs - Volkswagon Bugs
converted to a dune buggy-type setup. Wheel top tilted out in this case if I
recall. And I understand why - to allow for greater suspension travel -
followed by I think.

But there are less dramatic examples too. It sort of looks like the wife's
Honda CR-V is this way just a bit. My question is: How in the heck does that
not cause very uneven tread wear?

You CAN get the chain it with the rail in place, but it's a real PITA.
I dropped both ends while doing so, so I can't recommend it.

Re: [MBZ] Car I passed last night

2006-04-14 Thread Jim Cathey
It was a 4xx (420, 460? I forget) SEL and the thing I wanted to ask
about

420 SEL, no doubt.

pertains to the drivers side rear wheel which was canted over with the
top of the wheel stuffed into the wheelwell. I've seen this sort of
behavior

A camber problem like that can also be the result of a wreck that
bent the support arm. Was so on our SDL when I (foolishly) bought
it. A rear subframe assembly from a front-end wreck is what cured
that, and a bad wheel bearing too.

I sent an email requesting if anyone has any interior door panels (skins
and cardboard backing) and/or seats for a 1978 107. However, my email
rejects some of the Mercedes digest as spam (I know I really need to set
up a G-Mail account). So, if anyone has anything like this or has
suggestions about where to find them let me know. You can replay

Re: [MBZ] Weeping Servo...Weeping Driver

2006-04-14 Thread Dan & Sandy Steadman

Re: [MBZ] Weeping Servo...Weeping Driver

Bob writes:
I suppose I need to devise a systematic troubleshooting methodology for this
and get it right this year.

Bob,
Here is some information I have accumulated over the years of working on
this system:

If the ACC Servo has been replaced with an aluminum body servo, make sure
that you used nylon attachment bolts, and nylon washers to mount the servo,
or you might encounter intermittent electrical problems with the servo.

Everything in the ACC system is vacuum controlled through the ACC Servo. It
is possible that a vacuum line came off or loose. The switch that turns on
the fan is a vacuum actuated relay. This relay (or vacuum switch) is located
just above the radio and behind the vertical switch assembly. It is the one
on the far right side of the relay bank. Near this relay is a coil of green
wire located near the passenger foot-well near the glove box. This coil of
wire is a controlled vent for the vacuum system. Don't try to find a place
to connect it - one end is plugged into a vacuum line; the other end is open
to allow air to enter the vacuum system at a very slow rate. If this wire is
missing, or has fallen out, the blower will only run in defrost. (The vent
line is a German engineers idea of a practical joke).

Defrost mode, by the way, bypasses all of these circuits.

Assuming that the vacuum is OK, check the servo and servo control system.
This system consist of a temperature sensing resistor loop, an ACC control
amplifier (located behind the glove box), and the dreaded servo (located
under the hood, to the right on the engine).

The temperature is sensed/controlled by a sensor chain. The sensor chain
consists of a series of resisters; the ambient air temperature sensor
(located on the firewall just behind the engine), the temperature dial, the
in-car temperature sensor (located in the dash in the right hand speaker
grill, and the resister in the servo. If there is a problem in the resistor
chain, it is likely with the sensor in the dash. This sensor work by drawing
in car air through a tube connected to the blower. If this tube is
deteriorated, replace it with a piece of water pipe foam insulation.
Generally, a deteriorated sensor pipe will cause erratic temperature
control. The temperature dial resister can have a dead spot near the end.

To check out the resister chain,
1. Remove the ACC amplifier (located behind the glove box) and connect a
ground to pin 3 of the connector plug.
2. At the servo electrical connector, connect an OHM meter between pins 1
and pin 2 on the left of the connector.
3. Place the temperature wheel at max (85 degrees) and the resistance should
be between 2.2K ohms, and 4.7K ohms.
4. Place the temperature wheel at 65 degrees, and the resistance should be
between 1K ohm and 3.5 K ohms.

When you finish, re-install the amplifier.

If the circuit is open at any place in the resistor chain, the result is
heat. If the chain is OK, then the problem might be the amp.

To check the amplifier, connect a voltmeter between pins 1 and 7. With the
ignition switch in the on position, the voltage should be about a volt. Move
the temperature wheel from cold to hot. The voltage should increase to about
5 volts, the servo motor should move, and when the servo finds it home, the
voltage will drop back to about a volt. If it does not vary, then the amp is
bad. If you listen to the servo, you should be able to hear the servo motor
running to find the new position.

To check the motor in the servo, disconnect the electrical connectors on the
servo, and connect 12 volts between pins 4 and 5. The motor should run in
one direction and stop. Reverse the voltage and it should run in the other
direction. If it runs, only run it momentarily in each direction. Pin 1 on
the connector is on the left (towards the engine) side of the servo.

There is an inline fuse, located in the relay box on the fender, as I
recall. The in-line fuse powers the amplifier when the car is turned off to
run the servo to a parked position. The purpose of the parked position is to
avoid having the system start up where it was when you last turned off the
car. If the fuse is in there and the servo is operating properly, the servo
will run to PARK and shut itself off after you turn off the car. If the
servo is seized, the servo will run the battery down overnight for no
apparent reason - because the motor in the servo is always trying to move
the servo to a parked position and can't, thus, the system runs the battery
down trying to park the servo all night. It does not hurt to leave the
inline fuse disconnected. The system will work correctly, but the servo will
not park. For most people, this is generally not a problem.

While you are working around the servo, check the operation on the aux water
pump located beside the servo. The auxiliary water pump tends to short when
they stop working. If the pump is bad, it

Re: [MBZ] gas prices -

Profit is probably required, although not strictly necessary for actual
operations. The problem we have in the US (and Asia, most likely) is
that expectations for profit LEVELS are way out of line.

Used to be anything above 5% gross profit was considered borderline
predatory and inflationary (mostly the later, for good reason). Now
everyone expects 25% (newspapers in particular) and higher (Microsoft,
for example).

More than 5% profit on a transaction is highly deflationary (reduces
the value of the currency), and the higher the profit the worse the
deflation. Hence we have "billionaire" software developers selling
software at thousands of times the cost of producing it, executives
making hundreds of millions of dollars a year, etc -- in the old days
(before all the people who remember the 1920s and immediate aftermath
retired), this would have been stopped to avoid a major economic crash,
but now the subject is totally ignored.

High profit, low wage economies always collapse in a rash of bank and
business failures (read the history of the stock market and banking
industry between 1870 and 1912, for instance), high wage low profit
economies grow in real value (late 1950s through 1968, when the US
goverment decided to do Vietnam AND Medicare without tax increases to
pay for it).

Economics is a social science, after all!

I'm also much more enthusiastic about the Ford 500 than the Chrysler
300 -- we had a 1978 Ford Fairmont wagon for my mother, and it had very
good visibility and a good (high) seating position. Sadly, the rest of
the design was crap -- I always got a back ache driving it as I was
always sliding off the seat forward and butt friction was all the kept
me in place. Makes for a sore behind. Turning radius was larger that
that of an ocean liner in shallow water, etc.

I was behind a Ford 500 yesterday, and it could EASILY be mistaken for
a W124 chassis benz from behind -- I'm not fond of copying, but at
least they chose to copy a good car! They look pretty good to me, but
I'm not by any means in the "center of opinion" in the US. Sad, as I
suspect it, like the older Crown Vic styles, are basically decent
quality IF they would just get out of the early 1950s for suspension
and drivetrain design..

Now if they can just make the running gear anything like the European
stuff they might sell some cars -- a young friend of mine was looking
at SUVs (which he needs much like a hole in his head, he's in grad
school!), and he was astonished and the manuverability of the Land
Rover. I laughed, since I've driven far more German cars than anything
else, and will now never go back. Needless to say, I DID suggest he
not buy a Rover (pre 2005, anyway) -- they are not reliable.

Humid down there most of the year isn't it? The points almost
undoubtably have some crud on them.
Pull the flywheel off, take some fine emery cloth and touch up the
rust which has probably developed on the magnets. Then find the points
and either come up with a points file and clean 'em up or take a note
card and drag it between them a couple times. Sandpaper/emery cloth is
no good here, the sand will get in there and the points will never be
good again.

I went through this a couple weeks ago waking up my Cub Cadet 72 from

Note to self: Just because the can is the right color ...

On my 'new' $25 generator I have changed the Champion plug to an E3,
the oil
to Mobil 1 15W 50, and the old gas to fresh. I then gave it a shot of
contact cleaner a couple of times as I had grabbed the wrong can.
Nothing
happened with that or with the ether when I sprayed that. It turns
over
pretty easily [but I can't give it the strong pulls I once did]. It
does
not catch at all, but after a couple of pulls I hear air trying to get
into
the tank [- or perhaps out as it had just come from the station and was
warming up?] The power light does flash a time or two, but nothing
resembling a cough or a fire. I pulled the plug and it seems there is
no
spark. I assume there is a kit somewhere that will let me fix that.
I
didn't change the gap on the new plug - old one set at 20,000/th I
think,
new one looks the same, but with a double point. Manual says nothing
about
plugs except to change it if needed, and to take it to a service center
if
it doesn't start. Suggestions on the next step?
The generator [Homelite LR4400] has a side shaft 8hp Briggs. I have
never
taken one of these apart.

Also - Does anyone know if there is a kit to convert this to an
electric
start? I know that was an option when this was new, but I believe now
that
Homelite is a part of John Deere and not a separate company. Not sure
where
to look for something like that.

Re: [MBZ] R12 replacement

2006-04-14 Thread Trampas
My understanding is that a lot of the R12 replacement is a mixture of
propane and butane, thus flammable. I use duracool in my cars which is this
propane/butane stuff, it works great and does not require any changes of
hoses or oil. There is some debate on the safety, but I figure it is no
worse than gasoline under 60psi of pressure.

Every 3.5L diesel engine that left the MB plant had bad connecting rods.
They only fixed the problem after the production run ended. MB tended to
work with owners who had bad engines (high oil consumption) and less than
100Kmi. Beyond that, the owner was stuck.

[MBZ] gas prices -

2006-04-14 Thread MICHAEL ESH
I love it when people send the note out about not buying fuel from the major
oil companies. I work for a small family owned gas / convenience store company
and our bonus is based among other things, profit. So come on down!
It seems some people don't understand, we are in business to generate a profit
that will sustain our business for years to come and support the families of
all who work here and provide the customer with a service. The way we do this
is to provide the best service we can and hope the Customer comes back to us.

The way I am going to be able to afford gasoline/diesel is to drive less or
earn more. And by the way we pay the same price you do for fuel. No discounts

The reason I ask is that I wonder if the trucking company could be held

Again, I know it's too late, so I'm not trying to bring up bad feelings

I can see that. The 500 looks like it may be a more reasonable design.

On the subject of visibility: Yes, '80's European design seems to be optimal
- I need look no farther than my 83 240D. As someone who is adamant about
checking blind-spots, I get a very pleasing feeling every time I change
lanes in my 123 - effortless to confirm my safety zone. Best I've driven in
terms of blind spots (not counting my 92 Sportster).

The worst I've driven is the Chevy Cavaliler (with some "Z" something option
to please the college kids) that we rented recently. The rear deck was very
high, and it was hard to see out of it. And now that I've driven one, I've
noticed that when I am behind one of these gems, I can scarcely see the
driver's head - (doesn't help matters that that head is often attached to
a 5' 2" piece of jail-bait on a cel phone).

I wish they'd kept that feature in later cars. I have to drive mine

They're pretty sketchy, often leaving steps out. (I think they must
have a trademark on the phrase "Installation is the reverse of
removal.") They also contain a lot of generic stuff that's the same in
every manual and not very helpful.

In my opinion the progression, from worst to best, goes like this:
Chilton
Haynes
Clymer
Bentley

I dunno if you can get Clymer manuals anymore. I had one for a VW Bus,
once, and it was pretty good. Haynes manuals are cheap and usually have
good photos. They make a good companion book for getting your bearings
when using Bentley manuals, which often have photos that are poorly
reproduced. (Some of the photos in the Bentley for my Vanagon were just
black blobs.) My main quarrel with the Haynes manuals is they're pretty
thin, so there are a lot of jobs they just plain don't cover.

I see a superficial resemblance from the outside but having recently sat in
a Chrysler 300 and a Ford 500 back-to-back at a car show, I have to say that
their designs are totally different. The Chrysler feels like sitting in a
bathtub. Visibility is horrible for even moderately tall people (I'm 5'11"
and a smidge if I stretch).

The Ford, on the other hand, has a nice upright seating position and plenty
of glass. Visibility is not up to '80s-European-car standards (my benchmark
being the E28-chassis BMW), but it's much better than average.

I actually quite like some of the new Fords. I think the 500 would be a
terrific chassis for the diesel V6 that Ford puts in the Jaguar X-type in
Europe---it'd be about the size and weight of a 300SDL with much more power
(and better fuel economy, I imagine).

I heard once that this is the result of market research. People want to
feel safe in their cars, and high beltlines make them feel protected.

Personally, it makes me feel claustrophobic. I like low belt lines and
tall windshields that give me lots of visibility.

The new Ford pickups look terrible from behind, to me. The tailgate

sheet metal in it.

What gets me most is how Chrysler has managed to achieve such revered status
lately - "snoop-dog" even sporting a 300. How fickle we are! For many years
Chrysler owners were laughingstocks. Just strikes me funny - the trends.
That Chrysler 300 is on the level of the exotic these days.

Yes, the fact that the interior was photographed through the windows makes
one wonder if he really owns the car, doesn't it?

Not bad. The first thing I noticed on the interior shots, though, is that
whoever did the stereo install was an amateur---notice the bulging, ripply
vinyl around the speakers in the front doors. Kind of makes you wonder what
other indignities the car has sufferred that aren't evident from the photos.

[MBZ] 1992 300D for sale in FL

2006-04-14 Thread Dave M.
I spotted this on Cars.com and inquired about the VIN, so I could see
what options it has. I'm looking for ASD and heated seats, of which
this car has neither. It's green with cream Tex interior. Sounds very
nice, if it had the options I wanted I'd be all over it. Thought I'd
pass it along in case anyone else is interested... more details from
the seller are in the email attached below:

I am not the original owner. I bought the car from a man who works for
mercedes in jacksonville here at their port where they import into
usa. His mother in Ocala owned it originally, I think. The VIn is
WDBEB28D6NB643790. I used it as a spare car for my grown sons and me.
I think it would be great for a kid going to college. Car looks like
new on inside and outside. new a/c total system. everything works.

2006-04-14 Thread Dave M.
Sunil,

You are correct. If you buy one that still has straight rods and round
cylinders, you can replace the rods with the new style, and the engine
should last as long as any MB diesel powerplant. The W140 has lots of
fancy gadgets that are expensive to fix when the act up, though. It's
a very nice car but not for the faint of wallet.

I'm cheap too, but selectively so. Otherwise, I'd still be driving my 1969
Plymouth Valiant. Sure, it's a little aggravating to replace the plastic
headrest gear on my S350, but I really like having a headrest that goes up
and down at the touch of a switch. You can buy an entire Plymouth for the
cost of a Mercedes blower motor. Of course the Plymouth did not have AC to
begin with. My, aren't we an odd bunch?

[MBZ] a HELL of a job

2006-04-14 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
You all probably remember my SDL with no brake lights? Well anyways
tracked it down to the switch. It was a heck of a job getting it out.
Pulled one from a 123(much easier it seems). Though the fun was over
but NO, I had a HELL of a time getting that sucker back in. Looks
simple but its sort of a rube goldberg sort of deal trying to get the
nut to go over the the switch and thread it down all with 1 hand. Ended
up having to take out half the crap under the dash just to half way get
to it. Was just about ready to just pull the whole damn brake pedal
assembly when i finally got it!! That was ALMOST as bad as trying to
replace the expansion valve except I didnt get a bad sunburn on my belly

R-406A, Autofrost.

Engineered to be a R-12 topoff, but EPA won't allow that.

I've been using it in my rear-A/C equiped Suburban for about 6 years now.

Nope. Same hoses, orifice, condenser, and evaporator. No high-pressure
cutout switch needed 'cause the temp/pressure curve is quite close to
R-12. Use the same service hoses and gauges as R-12. The only thing I
changed on the car was the dryer.

It does weigh a bit less, so my 25lb cylinder of 406A is equivalent to
a 30lb cylinder of R-12.

What's all this dithering about the two types of lights on that W123
website?

There were two types of light assemblies. The one with the two round ones,
under glass, was for the lower end models. The other was for the 280E and
probably 300D.

I ordered a set of lamps for my '78 300D and the round/round type was
sent. I

didn't like them because they looked too much like the US equipment. Back
they went and the correct ones arrived as shown on the left of the
pictures.

Probably the best Euros I ever had with bright bulbs (can't recall what
wattage what with it being 25 years ago) and relays. Not as good as
present day

bi-xenons but great for the time.

I thought "money pit" was almost exclusively reserved for old british cars?

Re: [MBZ] IP Advance (??)

2006-04-14 Thread Jim Cathey
My '78 240D has a knob on the dash which advances the IP somewhat for
cold

It just pulls on the throttle linkage a bit. High idle, in other words.
Newer cars do the same thing automatically, via idle speed regulation.
So far as I know, timing on these cars is _only_ affected by RPM.

Re: [MBZ] Those crappy servos

2006-04-14 Thread RELNGSON
When my '78 300D was only two years old, the servo sprung a big leak. Made it
the eight miles home and paid $118 for a new one which I installed myself, of
course.

The underhood failures continued. The water pump, the radiator, the AC
condenser, the power steering pump, the aux heater pump, the AC compressor..

I think the alternator and maybe the master cylinder went the distance but
every other underhood component except the engine itself failed and all during
the warranty period, thank God.

And then there were the thirteen injectors...

So, jumping from the frying pan into the fire, I swapped it for an '85 190E
2.3.

They are fine cars if you like to tinker a lot to keep them going and get in
the habit of buying parts on eBay before you need them. If you had to pay
retail for every little thing that broke, you would discover the true
definition of "money-pit". Most of the expense is labor - at least thus far
(knock on wood).

That car actually has none of the available options for that year. It's as
cheap as you could buy one. Does not even have the glass sunroof - which
in

Florida is the sign of a true tightwad.

Re: [MBZ] Nice 95 S350D

2006-04-14 Thread Sunil Hari
But the 350SDLs are fine after they have a new engine or new rods installed,
right?

Let's say you're looking at a S-class with the 3.5L diesel engine - if all
the cylinders have good compression, then you can just put new connecting
rods in and have a very reliable car, right? Costs you $2500, $3000 or so
(assuming you don't do it yourself) and you have the last overengineered,
non-electronic S-class. Seems like a good way to buy a car.

Another 350SDL question - how much is one really worth, WITHOUT a new
engine? I'm not talking Kaleb pricing; I'm talking how much would people on
this list really pay? Please give two prices - one on a car needing new
rods, one on a car needing a new engine.

[MBZ] Harbor Freight R-134 guages?

2006-04-14 Thread Kevin J. Slater
I have 3 cars which have R-134 systems in some sort of state of charge.
Is it worth it to get an inexpensive set of guages to help me determine
the health of the systems? Only 1 of the 3 vehicles would merit serious
repair and even that is somewhat of a question at this point.

Does anyone have a pointer to a general R-134 A/C system checkup / howto?
