Its part of the central interlock system, its supposed to lock and

and in fact rarely needs to be turned off. Or so I find.

The switch that controls the fan speed (non ACC car) seems to be messed
up -
in that it is very hard to rotate it down to the "fan-off" dot (you

Not sure why they put the "off" dot way at the bottom - away from the
I, II,
and III positions. But I'm sure it shouldn't be so difficult to rotate
it
down to that position. It feels like it's going to break whey I try, so
I
don't try anymore. In fact the couple of times it was done, the dial
seemed
to be maladjusted when turned back up to one of the "on" positions.

Anybody have this problem before? What's wrong with it - other than
"it's
broke."?

[MBZ] Good news!

2006-05-03 Thread Curt Raymond
Talked to my Indy this morning and he told me to hold off buying an IP just yet.
This afternoon he called to say the car was fixed.
So I'm going to paraphrase here, don't jump all over me.
Apparently theres a whatsis in the IP for each cylinder and its held in place
by a pin, when he pulled the line to replace the o-ring the whatsis must have
lifted up (suction?) and rotated in its bore. Havoc ensued...
This wasn't discovered until he did a comparison between each whatsis and
discovered that two of them had turned. Correctly back in place everything
seems fine. No more fuel smell and the engine seems a bit peppier to boot. I'll
know more tomorrow after a good long run to work.

I have 2 cooler looking than sedans lighter, shorter wheelbase. I've
gotten 32mpg with them and hauled ass for days on end at speeds
reaching 95mph (of course they are capable of higher speeds). They're
a pain in the ass if you regularly have rear seat passengers. Some
parts are coupe specific and considerably more expensive.

[MBZ] 79 450SL rear stab link

2006-05-03 Thread Rich Thomas
I found a broken rear stab link (US driver side) on my buddy's SL, took
the old one off in about 2 minutes but there is nut for the lower end
that is stuck between the rear brake inner shield ( a little indentation
for it) and whatever the link goes into on the other side of the nut
(bracket/fitting on hub?). It looks like I would have to take off the
caliper, rotor, and shield to get the old nut out and put the new end on
correctly. (The old one was worn out so I was able to screw off the
lower end from the nut, leaving the nut in place, the new one is quite
tight so the attachment end won't turn).

I told him to order the CD manual too but he forgot, so I don't want to
go tearing stuff apart if I don't have to. If I take the caliper off
(two pins) does the rotor come off easily, somehow? or is it held on
with the center nut and bearings that would need to have the bearing
removed, reset, etc? I don't want to get into all that.

This simple part is looking like a PITA!

Re: [MBZ] Fuel door and cap

2006-05-03 Thread Hendrik Riessen
I would agree with this, get a vaccum tester and have hours of fun. If you
don't have a diagram of the system you are best of to draw one as you go and
label the lines when you figured out where they go and what they do.
Yes, there are locking caps. I have one on my 230E but never lock it because
1. I live in a civilised country where petrol theft is rare (well might not
be so now the price of fuel is going up) and 2. because the vaccum lock
works when I use my aftermarket remote locking/alarm it locks everything
including fuel flap, boot and doors.
Another problem you may have is that the little pin that locks the fuel cap
is broken off due to neanderthals using the car.
Anyway pull off the boot liner and have a look what is going on, someone
might have disconnected/removed the fuel flap locking actuator.
There is a great deal of self satisfaction to be had when succesfully fixing
the central locking.

But it seems he only unhooked the driver side, because the pass. side
still locks itself against my wishes; and when I unlock it with the
key,
then go to open the door, it locks itself. (pass. side only now).

It's not really unhooked all the way yet. Better would be to actually
fix the central locking system, you will be surprised how nice it is
to actually have it working. It's usually fairly cheap to fix, but
time-consuming to chase down the leaks. Once it's working it's fairly
easy to put keyless entry in too.

Surprises me to hear that the trunk is hooked into vacuum. It is a
wierd-acting lock - I have to turn the key ccw, then push in, then the
trunk
lid can be lifted. I thought that when I first got the thing, the trunk
would not automatically lock, but could be locked by key when desired.
Now
it always locks and requires a key every time. Hmm.

Something's wrong, the vacuum system is still attempting to lock
the trunk, even when maybe it shouldn't. You are fighting it, in
other words, just like with the passenger door, so of course you
aren't happy. The system, when it's working, works _extremely_ well.

Anyway, what about the locking gas cap question? (since my fuel door
won't
lock)

Probably there's a McParts cap that will work, but why not just fix the
central locking? Then there's no extra key to lose, and no extra
annoyances for you, the non-thief, when it comes time to fill up.

I have fixed the system on every one of our MB's that has it, because
it's so nice to have.

for turning off the venting is quite a bit stiffer than the fan switch,
and in fact rarely needs to be turned off. Or so I find.

Not sure why they put the "off" dot way at the bottom - away from the
I, II,
and III positions. But I'm sure it shouldn't be so difficult to rotate
it
down to that position. It feels like it's going to break whey I try,
so I
don't try anymore. In fact the couple of times it was done, the dial
seemed

to be maladjusted when turned back up to one of the "on" positions.

See above.

Anybody have this problem before? What's wrong with it - other than
"it's

broke."?

It don't work the way you think it does. The cable that runs the
vent flaps is probably stiff and in need of lubrication. Ours started
out very stiff, but has loosened up with use. But mostly I leave the
vent on and just turn off the fan.

The trunk lock should work as follows. If you turn the tumbler to the left

why would it be different for a DI engine?

I've heard that using ether can cause damage to the prechambers because it's
more detination they can handle. The injection to each cylinder is metered,
but with the ether, it's not. I think a HUGE part to my starting problems
with this engine is the leaky primer pump which is now on its way.

I gotta say, Mercedes really knows how to do suspensions. I didn't
fully appreciate it until I tried to go across some rough railroad

Re: [MBZ] spring time

2006-05-03 Thread Loren Faeth
As Marshall said, MB has a huge array of springs and rubber pads to cover
worldwide applications. If you order from outside the US, an MB is
infinitely customizable. In the US, we get ones loaded with accessories,
and a small choice of colors and interiors and perhaps 2-6 options. Part
of this is because they had to adapt to the American lifestyle, and part of
this is to overcome the vast ignorance of the US car sales force.

When I redid the suspension of an old saggy 220Sb, we installed taxi
springs. What a difference. That car could have run the Paris-Dakar
rally. THe manual for the "from 1959" chassis has spring tabnles in it,
and it is a bit overwhelming, but you can identify what is stock, and what
you should order if you want to go a bit stiffer.

Some options that change the spring strength/rate:
PS
PB
AUTO trans
5 speed
AC
Sunroof
SRS
and the list goes on.
Then there are choices for soft, normal and harsh or sport
It's been a long time since i looked at the charts, but there are choices
for additional normal load, and even ride height, or less/extra clearance.

The paint stripes on your old springs will indicate what they are, and what
you want. If you have a US model, they are pretty much all the same for
say a US 85 300D. they all come with PS, PB, auto, etc. If you can
identify the paint stripes, then you can identify exactly what you have.

Re: [MBZ] Used 190D injection pump

2006-05-03 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
First of all, it is not my reponsibility to email people who are looking
for parts. I do not do that nor do I have time. If somebody wants to
ask about parts, they need to send an email to the address at the bottom
of each message. Next, I am not going to get into any bidding
competition with some other seller, I sent you a price offlist, thats
the price. Third, as far as it taking a month to get your parts to you.
Sorry, if you were in a hurry you should have let me know. My
standard policy is to allow up to 14 business days for delivery. I do
not sell parts as a job, its a hobby. Therefore it comes after my real
job and other obligations. Most times parts are shipped VERY quickly as
most anybody else can verify who has bought anything from me. The parts
are usually much cheaper than you will get somewhere else. The tradeoff
is, if I am in a time of being busy, you might have to wait longer to
get your parts. Furthermore, its not appropriate to make comments like
that on the list, especially when you are making comments about the list
owner. If you have some problem with a delay in your parts, you should
have taken that up with me offlist, before it became a problem for you.
One final thought without mentioning names. There are certain
people who are blacklisted from buying parts from me. The reason? I do
not have time to deal with people who will request a parts order from
one seller(who happens to be a friend of mine), agree to the price, the
order is rounded up and prepared for shipping but instead of completing
the deal as agreed with the first person, then emails me hoping for a
better deal I guess only to find out I didnt have the parts that person
needed and referred them back to the first seller they already agreed to
purchase the said items from. That is rude, it does take a bit of
effort to get an order of misc low dollar items ready for shipping only
to find out you wasted your time. That would cause a person to be
blacklisted. So you can either buy from me or not, thats up to you.
What little bit of business I get from the lists doesnt even come close
to paying for it, but every little bit helps I suppose.

Anyway, back to your IP, I think all the ones I have are from 84, so you
would need to verify with other list experts to see if an 84 would work
on an 85, I really do not see any reason why not. I would just have to
double check to see if they are marked.

Now back to regular list topics.

Why is that? Its just oil, its not going to hurt anything. After all,
diesel fuel is just oil.

Subject: [MBZ] spring time

I heard and felt a clunk in the right front while I was driving my
1982 300D today. It still steered and rode OK but it did rattle when
I ran over bumps, so I took it pretty easy on the way home. A little
while ago I stuck a trouble light under the car to see what I could
see, which was this:

http://katzenfinch.com/spring/spring1.jpg

http://katzenfinch.com/spring/spring2.jpg

I did back away slowly after I got a good look at what the problem
appears to be, and came back inside to price coil springs. Rusty has
what seems to me to be a decent price on them, but they're marked
"NOTE: Front without sunroof" -- a bummer, since my car has a
sunroof. Out of curiosity, how do the coil springs differ between
cars with and without sunroofs?

I have no plans to tackle this repair on my own, but would be
interested in any theories as to what the hell happened.

WD-40 works VERY well as a substitute for ether. Not nearly as volatile so
the glow plugs don't ignite it. So what is the "bad, bad news" that it
equals? And why would it be different for a DI engine?

Springs break. It's rare, but it happens. Doesn't really look
all that rusty under there, so who knows why. The stator splines
aren't supposed to strip off the front of a transmission either,

2006-05-03 Thread redghost
Finally decided to crawl under Gump and give her new tie rods. Of
course the bright sunny morning chose to become buckets of rain and
hail as I was under there. Pickle fork and BFH got most of the stuff
unstuck before I was washed away, leaving one dangling. Had to attack
that when the sun returned. Now the steering wheel is off center.
Maybe 15*. I matched the new hardware to the old, after measuring both
a few times prior to beginning work. Had to adjust one a bit more to
what came off instead of what I had set up. Could this have done the
deed? Drives about the same. I am headed to get an alignment in the
morning.

It's all a matter of weight. A car with a sunroof weighs more than one
without. There are dozens of springs for most Mercedes models and the
selection of spring and matching pad is something of an art. The TDM has
30 pages on 123 spring selection and adjustment.

Problem; Oil appears to be leaking at a very slow rate (uses about a
quart and 1/2 between changes) from the bolt that holds the alternator
tension adjuster to the block. The bolt is tight as it will go and
there is about a 3/8" play between the block the adjuster and the > bolt.

Is this a blind hole in a boss into the block? Could a yutz have
tightened a too-long bolt enough to have cracked the block there?
There shouldn't be an oil source that needs sealing off by any bolt
that holds on the alternator, that's for sure! However this is
close to the chain tensioner, a notorious leaker, is it possible
the oil is running down from above?
