The 30A blower fuse is PROBABLY in a small black inline fuse holder
fastened to the driver's side shock tower. Attached picture is from an

Hi

I recently put an injection pump in my 603.970. Started right up and was

walked away for a few minutes and when I came back the car was overheating
and the gauge was in the red. I checked the thermostat and it opens.
However I replaced it with a new one any way. Car still overheats. I took
the waterpump out and there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it. I
do hear a slight rubbing sound when I turn it by hand. The car definitely
isn't getting any coolant through the upper hose. I checked the oil and
there seems to be some antifreeze in the coolant now. Prior to the
overheating there were no signs of coolant in the oil. My questions are:
Since there is trace antifreeze in the oil does this definitiely mean the
head gasket cracked from the overheating? Could a waterpump that seems to
be ok not circulate the coolant for anyother reason and is there any other
possible reasons for the coolant not to circulate? Car was sitting since
feb. before I replaced the injection pump. When I fill the coolant from
the resoivoir should coolant fill up the radiator and come out the top
hose?

What you report is EXACTLY what will happen if there is a big air bubble
in the cooling system. Rarely happens unless the head or head gasket has
already failed. You CAN'T service the car by starting it and walking
away! If you can stay there - DON'T start.

The water pump MAY be defective (should scrape) and if there is
anti-freeze/coolant in the oil (or vice versa), then either the head or
head gasket has failed. Both failures are very rare in that engine (but
can happen). Usually that engine simple starts consuming oil at an
outrageous rate!

When I bought my 300SD, I checked the primer, it leaked.
When I got it home and wanted to change the filters, I
changed the prefilter and went shopping. When I got home I
changed the canister, restarted & tried to hold 2000rpm with the
throttle. It stumbled a bit, but cleared up in under a minute,
the fuel pump got the fuel there fast enough to keep it from dying.
Note that I didn't put anything in the filter or use the primer.
(generally, the middle of a filter is the clean side, so whatever you
pour in there goes straight to the IP, so I don't usually prefill
fuel filters)

This is a COMMON failure in OM60x engines (happened to one of the 7
OM60x engines I've owned). The "O" rings on the delivery valve pipe
fittings in about 2-3% of these pumps fail. Not a difficult repair. You
need a the serrated socket to remove the pipe fitting (MB part # 617 589
01 09 00). Get a few extra "O" rings. The pipe fitting must be torqued
correctly.

http://mb.braingears.com/124_DISC1/Program/Engine/602_603/07.1-8627.pdf

Some people also replace the copper delivery valve seals while in there
(at minimal cost) but in fact the delivery valve seals fail FAR less
often than the "O" rings. You may or may not be able to get the "O"
rings and seals from your Mercedes dealer. You CAN get them from a Bosch
distributor!

The primer pump is there to prime the filter, but it won't hurt to fill
the canister, either.

It takes a long time with that tiny pump -- and if it is the old slyle,
it is likely to start leaking when you operate it from dead rubber or
leather parts. Replace with the "thumb" style (sealed) as soon as
possible, they are inexpensive.

Change the filter with the engine hot, it starts easire.

Cranking will run the battery flat at least once, before it starts,
don't do that.

Fuel consumption and engine wear will skyrocket! When used just for
short hops, fuel consumption in cold weather may ALMOST double. The
purpose of the thermostat is to PREVENT cooling until the engine reaches
the lower end of the optimal coolant temperature to minimize high wear
and high fuel consumption that results when the engine is cooler than
optimal. Until the engine reaches proper temp range, the fuel is not
completely consumed.

[MBZ] E320 CDI

2006-07-11 Thread Donald Snook
My father and Stepmother live in Biloxi, Mississippi and their house and
both cars were devastated in Hurricane Katrina. After the Hurricane,
they went out and bought a new Honda Pilot which they love (it is pretty
nice) and they began work on their house. They had flood insurance so
they are better off than most. Anyway, they settled with the Insurance
company for the house and cars and are just now prepared to buy a new
car. My father really liked my old 124 diesel and is considering a new
Mercedes. The reason I am asking is that he is interested in the new
320CDI. My question is regarding fuel. I know there was much discussion
about this recently but I am not sure my question was answered (why
would it be, I am just now asking).

The 2005/06 CDI can run on the current supply of diesel. Correct?

Will anything change when the new fuel comes on the market? Can they
run the ultra-low sulfur fuel in the CDI?

I told him if he buys one of these, he should definitely get the
extended warranty or buy a slightly used version that comes with the
100,000 Starmark warranty.

Any other suggestions?

2006-07-11 Thread Tom Hargrave
The problem is that there are two types of rebuilders. There are those who
repair what's broken and there are those who do a complete tear down and
replace the diodes, regulator & bearings - they remanufacture alternators

There is nothing wrong with the ones that are repaired instead of
remanufactured, just don't expect them to last as long. Everything that was
not replaced is still wearing out.

Compare what Rusty sells to the big box stores and you'll note a huge price
difference - my bet is that Rusty sells the ones that are really rebuilt.

Yeah, I posted about this last winter IIRC. Not all "Bosch" branded rebuilt
electrical products are to Bosch dealer spec.

WHich is why, at least here in Kanuckistan, if you buy a "Bosch" product
from a big chain retailer (in Canada, Cdn Tire, I guess Pep Boys is the
rough equivalent in the USA), you can't use it as a core or get warranty
from an actual Bosch dealer.

The Bosch dealers display a fax from Bosch HQ, poster-size on their wall,
disclaiming responsibility for such products.

That being said, in our Northeast climate I can't remember when I got more
than 3 years give or take, from any 'rebuilt' alternator.

I'd carry cheap stuff, synthetic oil doesn't burn well if you put it in the
fuel filter.
Could probably stretch your range by 3-5 miles if you run out of fuel too.
I wouldn't carry diesel long-term unless it was in a well-sealed container, like
an aluminum camping fuel bottle.

I was thinking more in the line of carrying a quart of atf in the trunk and
being able to use it for an emergency
change of filter as well as being able to use it for the transmission if needed
so that one did not need to haul
around a bottle of fuel and of atf.

I've got the Douglas Xtra-Trac, drove them through a Michigan winter.
No traction problems noted, except on ice. Went through a pond twice
a day at 50mph for a couple of weeks in March. (I knew where the high
ground was, so I only had to go through 1-2" of water most of the time)
Have on occasion driven hard in wet and snow with the Xtra-Trac on the
front and the Contis on the back, only major disparity noted was the
back tires broke loose first in snow, but the Contis have more miles
on them so that's not unexpected. Subject vehicle is a 1995 Taurus,

Go through PayPal. They will require an "expert opinion" on company
letterhead. Then you take the dash to your local MB dealer and have them
write a letter stating why the dash isn't in "excellent condition". Fax
the

letter to PayPal and they will secure the funds to refund your money upon
return shipment to the seller. It's not too painful, but will take a few

Time to start surfing the eBay site map. I forget where it is, maybe under
Trust and Safety (though something tells me they moved it out of there an

IIRC PayPal will only back you up on non-receipt of goods, and then only for
30 days.

But it's been a while since I had to deal with this (at the wrong end,
actually, for a guy who went postal on me when a package was delayed in

It's bloody hard to get your hands on a living, breathing eBay employee to

Re: [MBZ] Tires Again /rolling resistance comment and question

2006-07-11 Thread Gary Thompson

It's not about how long they last. It's about how scary they are in
the wet. PO put cheapy Douglas tires on my old W123 (probably just to
get it to pass inspection so he could sell it), and it would try to
swap ends quite often in the rain. Not a good thing. These were
relatively new tires. I managed to live with them for about 8000 miles
before I replaced them with Khumo 795's. Much more sure footed, and
quieter to boot. Not much more expensive either.

Anyone have it - or can tell me how to remove the screen? The center

pretty solid and I can't figure out how it comes out.

Larry,

On my 95, at least, the blower fuse looks exactly like the glow plug
fuse, only 30A instead of 80A. Take a look at the one you think is the
glow plug fuse. May really be for the blower.

On a side note, I learned the hard way that a visual inspection of
these fuses in situ is not sufficient to tell if they are good. They
can develop hairline fractures that are near impossible to see, and
even work part of the time. I've seen one of these that would work in
the cool morning air, but fail in the afternoon when it got warmer.
You have to actually pull the strip fuse and tweak it a little to
verify it's still good.

Whether or not you have a primer pump, the answers should be yes
and yes.

It should fill the filter on it's own, but you may have a dead battery
first, or just adding a lot of wear and tear on your starter and
battery if

nothing else.
It's always a good idea to fill the filter before you put it on.

Hmm, dunno. I've never tried filling the filter with synthetic atf. I'd
stick to normal simply for cost since you're just burning it anyway. I have
heard that synthetic doesn't burn well, but I know I've had at least some
amount of synthetic motor oil in my fuel tank and it kept running, but at
100% if there was a problem with burning you'd find out...

was different than the newer models. It is a 76 300D so a 115 model. Can't
recall off the top of my head what the
engine # is.

Randy,

Definitely fill the filter, the less air left, the better. You should have
a priming pump, do you not see a plastic knurled knob, down on the side of
the injection pump? It unscrews CCW, then the pump is operated by push/pulling
the knob. If you have ANY fuel leakage during this operation, call Rusty,

I guess that might be a good solution. I can certainly fill with diesel if
doing this in my garage at home but I
was also wondering about what I should do in the event that I ever encounter
problems on the road away from home. I
plan to carry spare filters with me and wondered if I needed to carry around a
small can of diesel fuel. Having a
bottle of atf in the trunk wouldn't be a bad thing anyway. Any further comments
on whether synthetic atf is ok to
run through the ip and engine in that manner is ok of if one should stick with
more conventional atf?

Whether or not you have a primer pump, the answers should be yes and yes.

It should fill the filter on it's own, but you may have a dead battery
first, or just adding a lot of wear and tear on your starter and battery if
nothing else.
It's always a good idea to fill the filter before you put it on. Personally
I use ATF to fill it.

Time to do some fluid changes and check valve clearance, chain stretch etc.

Now, I replace all fuses every 10-12 years. That's was the 1st thing I did

On a side note, I learned the hard way that a visual inspection of

can develop hairline fractures that are near impossible to see, and
even work part of the time. I've seen one of these that would work in

You have to actually pull the strip fuse and tweak it a little to
verify it's still good.

Not "lawn tractor", "yard tractor". I think that means that you can

What else are you going to do with a Cat that has neither blade nor

If it were in Michigan, I'd offer up to 50% more than scrap metal

Re: [MBZ] Tires Again /rolling resistance comment and question

2006-07-11 Thread Loren Faeth
How true! I also tried the generals from Sams. Wear fast and slip
belts. The goodyear allegra from sams, also in 205/65 15 for the SDL have
held up ok. They just cost more than they are worth, and you have to put
up with all the Sams BS. Sears, Sams and all such places have lines only
sold there, and they don't purchase the Mfgr warranty. The warranty is
only good at t the joint you bought them from. They may carry the same
brand and type as those available at your friendly local tire store, but
they are NOT the same. In general, the big name tires sold retail that are
the same sizes as they sell to carmakers are the rejects the carmaker won't
take. When dealing with US tiremakers, and I include Bridgerock in that
lot, you often get better tires not wearing the big-name brand. Way back
when, the snears MIchelins were as good as the Michelins for a lot less
money. (They all slipped belts) Not so any more.

I have found in the past 2-3 years that i can buy Contis (Contact touring)
for less than the price just about anything else available that is a decent
tire. (S rated or better) I do not consider the wallyland 29.95 Douglas
tires to be decent tires.

Hi Trampas,
I tried the kicking method - no luck - then I looked for the fuse. I
found
the main GP 80A fuse directly in front (bumper side) of the master fuse

box - at least I believe it's the main fuse for the GPs. Then I looked
inside the master fuse box - the label said the fan motor was outside
the
fusebox. But I haven't found it. Along side the fuse box is a plug
type
affair - I unplugged it and it looks like an aluminum male plug going
into a
alum female receptacle. Does that have anything to do with it?

I'm getting ready to search my workshop manuals & "The Bible" for info
on
R&R'ing the motor/cage along with any fuse location info - but they
kinda
assume the reader is able to find fuses! ;-\

I'd like to change it myself - for the satisfaction. And I'll know how
to
do it next time - I plan to keep this car a long time. It just turned
107k - it wasn't driven regularily before we bought it last Feb - so I
think
these kinds of problems are inevitable - but should be fixed easily.

Thanks again for sharing your "hands-on experience" !

;-)

Try kicking under the passenger dash. Usually the brushes on the

blower

motor goes bad around 150k miles. Kicking under the passenger dash

will

make
it work for a bit longer, at least long enough to call Rusty.

Also check fuse under hood on driver's fender, it is not with other

fuses

but in it's own black case. If it is good order a spare from Rusty and

keep
in dash, they will eventually fail due to vibration.

Note the blower motor can be ordered with or with out squirrel cage. I

order
with out, which is cheaper, then use an air hammer to remove squirrel
cage.
To do this hold squirrel cage and use air hammer on motor shaft, old

otor

will fall to ground. I have done about 6 blower motors this way and

have

never broken plastic squirrel cage.

Howdy -
Have 2 problems - 1st, the blower fan in the ACC system stopped today;
naturally it's in the low 90s. I seem to recall it hesitating - for

maybe

2

seconds, then it started blowing normally. I confirmed the compressor

is

engaged.. Also checked the fuses and outside temp indicator - both

were

normal.

Any suggestions? from reading the WSM it seems like I would need

remove

the

glove box to get to the fan. I plan to check connections if I can

figure

out what I need to check - a loose wire would explain the short delay
before the fan came on. Unfortunately, today, the fan didn't come on

at

all.

2nd problem - the ACC Wiring Diagrams section 83-606, should have my
wiring
diagram. But after going thru the pages 3 times I believe they're

missing

the 124.128 chassis - perhaps there's another similar chassis that

works?

Or perhaps the WDs for the ACC are still on the internet somewhere?

TIA --

If you take the shifter out, you'll probably find that the collar on the
plastic bushing has broken partially or completely off. A new bushing
ordered from Germany will probably solve the problem.
Meade Dillon [EMAIL PROTECTED] sent me diagrams and parts numbers
which were invaluable in replacing parts that had fallen off and dropped to
the road. The diagrams were on a hard drive that went bad but here are the
parts number he sent later on. These refer to the drawing which you will
need to identify the bushing and any missing parts:

...
Key part, these parts are for "From vehicle id #307216" (last part of VIN).
I'm guessing that is correct given the year of your car, you'll need to
verify that last numbers if VIN are greater than this.

Not "lawn tractor", "yard tractor". I think that means that you can
put a log chain on the drawbar and tow scrap vehicles around the yard.
What else are you going to do with a Cat that has neither blade nor
bucket?
If it were in Michigan, I'd offer up to 50% more than scrap metal
value for it. A friend of mine has a similar vintage (but not Cat
brand) crawler/loader/backhoe with worn out carriage and it is not
worth 1/3 the cost of new bogies/tracks.

[MBZ] Driving coast to coast on deep fat fryers

2006-07-11 Thread Rich Thomas

Driving coast to coast on deep fat fryers

"We pull over at freeway exits with a plethora of fast-food
restaurants," he said. "Any place with a fryolator."

Generally, the students fan out to check out the dumpsters at a rest
stop. When one looks promising, they ask the management if they can take
their grease.

"At first they are perplexed. The moment of truth comes when we stick
the hose into the dumpster and the other end into the gas tank," Zabel
said. "That's when they say, 'OK. You are for real.'"

Re: [MBZ] Tires Again /rolling resistance comment and question

2006-07-11 Thread Mike Canfield
Also to be mentioned is where the tires are purchased and at what store.
Tires bought in the warmer climates seem to be harder and therefore get less
traction. I assume this is to compensate for the hotter conditions the tire
must operate under.
I have bought General tires from Sam's clubJUNK from the word go.
Balance issues and very low treadlife. Bought the same tires from a
Christiansen tire and had great luck with them. I askedApparently, just
like everything else, the large chains have the manufacturers make them a
line of tires to their specs so they can sell them cheaperBuyer
beware.

Re: [MBZ] Overheating

2006-07-11 Thread Mark . Maturo
I drained the coolant to replace the hoses while I was waiting for the pump
to be rebuilt. I set the timing on the pump with the $25 dollar tool that
screws in the side of the pump and locks it into position to be put back in
at 15 egrees ATDC. Car runs fine and quiet until it overheats which does
not occur rapidly. I guess I should pull the head?

Several possibilities here.

One, if you drained the coolant you didn't get enough in there before
you started it (although I don't know off the top of my head why you
would have).

If the temp gauge was in the red, very likely the head itself is
cracked, not just the gasket.

How did you set the timing for the IP? Grossly advanced timing will
cause severe overheating.

As much highway driving as that truck sees, I'll probably never replace

I share the same experience as Robert & Tara Ludwick.
I am currently running a set of Nokian WR's on one of my 124's.
They now have 14k mi on them and they still look new.
They are only a little noisy, and they don't handle quite as good a a
Frenchy or Bridgestone.
But the traction is fantastic on hot dry roads, wet roads, icy roads and in
blizzards.

Hi Trampas,
I tried the kicking method - no luck - then I looked for the fuse. I
found
the main GP 80A fuse directly in front (bumper side) of the master fuse

box - at least I believe it's the main fuse for the GPs.

Re: [MBZ] Tires Again -

2006-07-11 Thread LarryT

Everyone has really provided some great experiences -

one more question about tires - are the tires put on new tire different than
those bought from retailers? I had some Firestones on a pickup we bought
new - those tires were bald by 16k miles -

For that poor experience I'll never buy F'stones again. But maybe that's
not fair - perhaps those were some manufacturers specials that are not as
good as those bought at retailers. Not a goood marketing decision but you
never know what happens to win a huge (Nissan) tire contract.

I personally had some Continentals Contact Extreme tires. I threw them away
with only 10k miles on them. They were the worse tires In the mornings
it felt like you were driving over 2x4s in the road. Additionally when the
tires had bad road noise. The bumping in the mornings was so bad I kept
wanting to pull over and check that the tires were not flat. I did not
feel

safe to have my wife drive the car.

I replaced them with Michelin MXV4 tires. Note that I tried to get tires
from Mercedes dealer, but they wanted an arm and a leg because they were
special order. When I took car to dealer to get alignment the sales guy
said

yea we do not carry them. I laughed and said that is funny because your
sales display there has 4 MXV4 in the size I needed. He looked at me and
laughed like I was joking, then he checked. Note that I could have ordered
rims with tires preinstalled from Tire Rack for $100 more than Mercedes
quoted me for the tires.

I also consulted other people I trust and generally the most recommended
is

the MXV4s and the Harmony from Michelin.

BTW the local Mercedes dealer is advertising their great customer service.
So it was real funny as I sat their for 30 minutes waiting to give them my
keys. The friend giving me the ride said, "If they had great customer
service they would not need to advertise it."

My vote is for German made Contis, hands down. I can't find anyplace to
buy them anymore. I have several US made Contis on several vehicles with
no complaints SO FAR***

Last night, one of the Jokohamas I had on the 300TE came apart on the
interstate and cause $2000 damage to the TE. The steel belts and tread
came off, flapped around and then flew off. It took out the plastic inner
fender liner, broke the front bumper cover, took off the bottom fender
trim, bent the rocker and took the paint off the fender, door and
hood. The tire had less than 2000 miles.

I can say without a doubt, the Jokohamas are coming off and Contis are
going on. I have driven Contis hundreds of thousands of safe miles, with
never a problem or slipped belt. Keep in mind though, that those were
German made Contis.

Re: [MBZ] Tires Again /rolling resistance comment and question

2006-07-11 Thread mykd1
Now that you mention the rolling resistance I seem to remember one of the car
magazines doing a test of all the popular tires. Michelin, BF Goodrich,
Goodyear, Conti's, Pirelli etc. I think it was on performance tires though and
the test vehicle was a BMW M3. I do believe they included rolling resistance in
the test as well as wet and dry performance.

Harry and all,

I tried the Contis as well, and they rolled true and handled well. I noted
that the rolling resistance was much higher than the previous set of
Yokohamas , probably costing me 1-2 MPG. I had both sets of tires mounted on
identical Bundt MB wheels so I did some coast down comparisons and even used
a

spring scale to move the car on my flat concrete driveway. There was a
significant difference, easily noticeable between the sets of tires.

There is currently renewed interest in publishing rolling resistance in tire
ratings, this is, of course, because of $3 fuel in the US. To my knowledge,
no US magazine has dared to add the rolling resistance test and publish the
results. Has anyone found this information in a Euro car mag? They have
been dealing with high fuel prices for a long time and should be in the fore
front of reporting this info.

I had good luck with the Conti's too, but couldn't find the replacement for my
Passat. The dealer had them, but there was no way I was going to pay more than
$100 a tire. I ended up getting a BF Goodrich Traction TA for $85 a tire at
Sears. A little stiffer in the sidewell and noisier than the Conti, but a good
tire for the money.

I'm sorry you had problems.

I happen to have driven many hundreds of thousands of safe miles on
Yokohamas. Passanger car, light truck, and heavy truck tires. I have
been happy with every set.

But I suspect this is like the pickup truck debate...

Oh, it sure would! But it needs 16.5in, >load range E - so they would
cost more than the whole truck did!!!

As much highway driving as that truck sees, I'll probably never replace
the tires because of wear.

I've never had Kuhmos on a car, but their big truck tires are very nice,
impressive handling and braking even when empty.
My personal favourite for cars anymore is Nokians. you just can't beat
those things for traction, especially in adverse conditions, and the
price isn't bad either.

I've heard good things about Kuhmo - but little about Sumi and the Falkens -
we look for excellent wet weather performance and quietness - - my logic is
even the worst tires will likely never see the max dry weather performance

overpriced. You need to remember I drive diesels, not SLs or corvettes. I
only have bought the touring grade Contis. I know some ppl have good luck
with the Frenchys, and some have even good luck with good years. I have
even had a few of them (goodyears) that did not slip belts or come apart.
One of the best sets I have had were dunlops. Last summer I had 3 of 4
dunlops slip belts really bad in the span of 100 miles or so. Most of the
time Generals are pretty good, but some do not have good wet
traction. Toyos come apart. Remingtons seem to be ok but have poor
wet/snow traction.

Conti Contact touring, the current incarnation, are not noisy in my
experience, and come out of the box needing .5 oz or less to balance. They
have good traction, reasonable durability, and IHMO a good balance of tire
qualities for the price. I just rebel at $100 each for ordinary car tires.
But, as I indicated in the earlier post, the jury is still out on the US
made (General) Contis. My personal preference is for stickiness over long
wearing.

This is only my experience. YMMV And, I am only talking about various
13", 14" and 15" tires on MBs. Truck tires are a different story.

I did not feel
safe to have my wife drive the car.

I replaced them with Michelin MXV4 tires. Note that I tried to get tires
from Mercedes dealer, but they wanted an arm and a leg because they were
special order. When I took car to dealer to get alignment the sales guy said
yea we do not carry them.

I also consulted other people I trust and generally the most recommended is
the MXV4s and the Harmony from Michelin.

Re: [MBZ] Test and possible move to WA

Hey, twelve of your bestest buds were down here last weekend, but alas, 500
of their worstest enemies showed up to poop and tinkle on their parade. But
golly, they sure were smartly dressed in that fashionably retro-chic
attire. Sure is getting hard to peddle third-rate hate these days. What a
shame.
